Maternal and infant mortality rates in the Southern United States remain disproportionately high, and inconsistent implementation of the Golden Hour, defined as uninterrupted skin to skin contact for at least the first hour after birth, continues to limit its evidence based maternal and neonatal benefits. Introduction

This project implemented standard operating procedures for inventory management in a low-resource clinic, incorporating First Expired, First Out (FEFO), Just-in-Time (JIT) ordering, and barcode scanning to reduce medication waste and optimize inventory processes. The aim was to reduce medication waste and optimize inventory processes.

Methodology

The Lean Six Sigma framework guided this project. Root causes of waste included inaccurate demand forecasting, lack of expiration tracking, insufficient staff training, poor stock rotation, and absence of standardized procedures. Baseline waste and practices were recorded. Medications were organized with nearing expirations upfront (FEFO), PAR levels were set, and JIT ordering implemented. Waste …

The ongoing shortage of nurse educators across the United States has led to a critical need among nursing programs, particularly in rural areas. A quality improvement project was developed in response to literature regarding the need for new and novice nurse educator orientation programs and limited structured onboarding at the implementation site. The quality improvement project implemented an orientation boot camp for new and novice nurse educators. Objective: This exploratory study examined perceived self-efficacy in information literacy skills in nursing students and discusses how collaborative relationships between nursing faculty and librarians can strengthen curricular efforts to support information literacy.

Methods: Using the Information Competency Assessment Instrument, a survey research design was used to determine student perceptions of their information literacy skills. Participants included nursing Baccalaureate, Master's and Doctoral students in each of these programs.

Results: The Information Competency Assessment Instrument identified low self-efficacy in the following categories: using an index, determining information needed for assignments, use of governmental documents, media sources, producers of information and citing sources. …

Vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic has been an issue in the Latinx and Black community since the initial discussions of the emergency use of the experimental Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. The aim of this project is to standardize the patient outreach process to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Patients at a community clinic in Oakland have expressed hesitance of the COVID-19 vaccine. They also exhibited increased frustration with the staff who are contacting them to schedule vaccine appointments and provide information. This resulted in refusal of the vaccine and less than desirable number of vaccine appointments. The objective of this …

Background: Every year in the U.S., there are 700 pregnancy related deaths that occur, with ⅔ of those deaths being preventable. African American women are 3-4% more likely to die of pregnancy related complications, mainly preeclampsia, than any other population. Preeclampsia is related to cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, which Black women are more at risk for. Objective: This systematic review will explore how preventative techniques such as the use of diuretics and physical activity during pregnancy will decrease the risk for preeclampsia in African American women compared to untreated preeclampsia complications that affect mortality rates upon delivery. …

Dysphagia screenings are important to be done for all stroke patients in order to prevent aspiration, pneumonia, and other complications. All patients should be screened regardless of severity of stroke. Many policies outline that all patients should be screened, but many floors are not implementing the policy on all patients. This article reviews research associated with dysphagia screenings and how to properly perform one. Dysphagia screenings should be performed on all stroke patients at the hospital to achieve the best outcomes post-stroke.

When conducting online survey research, obtaining an adequate response rate in order to have meaningful, reliable data can be challenging. In our study examining hospital unit-level data, a 40% response rate was needed to adequately reflect the degree to which unit staff perceived one another as trustworthy. In addition, approximately 150 units were needed to analyze the relationship between perceived trustworthiness and selected operational and quality outcomes.

In spite of following best practices for survey research (e.g., careful communication planning, short survey length) in a multi-hospital study system, most of the units’ response rates were inadequate to include the units …

People in California who suffer from mental health conditions are often admitted involuntarily to hospitals on 72 hour psychiatric evaluation holds if they are deemed imminently dangerous to themselves, or others, or are gravely disabled. Observational patient safety checks are performed and based on patient acuity and hospital standards. Variations exist among different clinical settings with regard to best practices and the patient subpopulations that may warrant less frequent safety checks. Background: Adolescent childbirth continues as a public health concern, and investigation of postpartum posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depression is important to inform future research and practice. Longitudinal studies exploring PTSS alone or in combination with depression are non-existent for postpartum adolescent populations. This study aimed to identify stress/PTSS and depression symptoms at 72 hours and three, six, and nine months postpartum, and determine if symptoms at each time point predicted later symptoms. Residents of nursing homes diagnosed with dementia have long been treated with psychotropic drugs for the symptoms of behavioral disturbances that are frequently associated with major neurocognitive disease. Specifically, the antipsychotic drugs have been widely used in this population. Despite a lack of evidence, antipsychotic rates have shown up to 25% of dementia patients in nursing homes (NH) are prescribed these drugs. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine whether implementing a clinical prompt reminder in the electronic medical record (EMR) would improve provider's adherence to Hepatitis C Viral (HCV) screening per the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guideline. Background: Nearly four million Americans are infected with HCV, but the majority are unaware of their status (CDC, 2012). HCV is a chronic progressive disease and is strongly associated with liver cancer and other HCV complications in untreated individuals (El-Serag, 2012).
