In 2010, nearly 1 in 5 visits to the emergency department (ED) were categorized as potentially avoidable, resulting in a significant $65 billion increase in health care expenditures and exacerbating ED overcrowding. This project addressed whether a staff education initiative focused on evidence-based patient teaching strategies can enhance nurses’ patient education skills regarding when patients should seek medical attention. Utilizing theories, such as the diffusion of innovation theory and transformational theory, a staff education program was developed in this project informed by evidence-based practice. As part of a nursing leadership project, a team of nursing students at Seattle Pacific University (SPU) collaborated with a Washington State affordable independent living facility for seniors; they focused on providing information on the appropriate use of emergency care, urgent care, and primary care services for various health concerns. Bullying within the clinical environment is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts prelicensure nursing students. The aim of this study was to describe prelicensure nursing students' experiences of and reactions to bullying by registered nurses (RNs) during their clinical experience. The qualitative research design involved narrative analysis of participant stories to gain insights into the nature and consequences of these interactions. The findings revealed that bullying manifested through RNs ignoring students, withholding or not accepting help, making wrongful accusations, and engaging in both verbal and non-verbal mistreatment of students. Six nursing students attending Seattle Pacific University (SPU), partnered with a women’s day center to provide and support healthcare needs for a leadership project. During the first few weeks of being at the shelter, we visited the agency site to get a better understanding of the population and have a greater idea of what the focus problems should be. Inefficient communication between nurses and patients increases the risk of medication errors and jeopardizes patient safety, ultimately resulting in lower patient satisfaction as indicated by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of educating nurses on patient medication education using the teach-back method. Data were collected using HCAHPS survey responses from adult patients with medical conditions who had been discharged from a medical-surgical unit. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to decrease barriers to accessing prescriptions using a free campus prescription delivery service (CPDS) through process improvement and interprofessional collaboration. The target population was the clinic population, focusing on college students residing on campus (SRoC).

A utilization review and social influencers of health (SIoH) screenings revealed barriers to filling prescriptions among acutely ill students at a local university in a Midwestern rural college town.

Background: The HPV vaccine protects patients against infection and cancers, yet it is underutilized. Medical Assistants (MAs) can play a pivotal role in vaccination and are the focus of this project.

Aim Statement: This project aims to examine whether one educational session can improve the perceptions, knowledge, and comfort level of MAs regarding HPV vaccination.

Neonatal resuscitation is a low-volume, high-risk occurrence. Given the infrequency of resuscitation, newer neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses may have little to no exposure to neonatal resuscitation events. This can lead to a lack of confidence in resuscitation skills, contributing to burnout, poor patient outcomes, and the potential for nursing turnover. Purpose of Project: This project aims to utilize multimodal standardized patient education as an evidence-based practice intervention to reduce inpatient falls.

Background: In 2022, Kaiser Foundation Hospital (KFH) San Diego had 116 falls. Inpatient falls with injury account for the second-highest Joint Commission (TJC) sentinel event and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) adverse events. These injuries include lacerations, subdural hematoma, subdural hemorrhage, hip fractures, and wrist fractures. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have also stopped reimbursing hospitals for the care provided after patients have sustained a fall with injury.

Background: Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Approximately 6%–10% of pregnancies in the United States are complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus, yet postpartum diabetes screening rates are low nationwide.

Current best practice among emergency departments worldwide includes the maintenance of a dedicated resuscitation space. This practice allows for team members and equipment to be ready at a moment’s notice to provide care to a patient in need of lifesaving interventions. This evidence-based performance improvement project seeks to implement this standard of care in a busy, urban emergency department in Southern California.
