The purpose of this study was to identify safety factors in patient care on the medical service of a selected hospital in order to find information which could lead to recommendations for safety measures which might improve patient safety and patient care.

The descriptive-survey method of research was used. Data regarding the reported incidents were collected from the regular incident report forms, in use in the hospital. for a period of one year. Data regarding potential, unreported incidents were collected from special report forms, for a period of two months.

As yet there is little agreement among health workers as to whether the practice of between-meal eating is harmful, beneficial, or indifferent in its influence on health. Studies which have been done heretofore on between-meal eating have been concerned with the effects on growth, appetite, daily nutrient intake, regularity, body metabolism, overweight, work efficiency, and dental caries. It appears that the possible physiological effects of between-meal eating have been only partially explored. The problem of this study was the effect of eating between meals on stomach emptying time.

It was the purpose of this survey to find out what post-basic preparation the administrative, supervisory and head nurses had received for their positions in six Seventh-day Adventist hospitals. The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of approach in the study. An information card was devised to gather the data. A total of 190 or 81 percent of the 235 anticipated responses were returned. The recommended preparation for nurses in nursing service positions, as set forth by the American Nurses' Association in the Functions, Standards and Qualifications for Practice, was selected as the criteria by which this preparation was …

The purpose of this study was to find out the immediate and residual antibacterial effects of the two preoperative skin preparation procedures most commonly used in the operating room of this selected hospital.

This study was conducted on one hundred selected surgical patients from the general medical and surgical units of this hospital. The preoperative skin preparation Procedure A (ether-alcohol-tincture of zephiran) was compared with the preoperative skin preparation Procedure B (3 per cent hexachlorophene solution). The purpose of this study was to determine if Staphylococcus aureus present in mothers when admitted to the maternity unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital could be a factor in the development of staphylococcal infection in infants. Biological specimens were collected from one hundred and forty mothers and their infants from September 1, 1959, to January 31, 1960. The specimens were obtained from the nares and external vulva of all mothers upon admission to the maternity unit, and from the nares and head of their infants after delivery. The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the activities of the nursing team leader on a selected medical unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital and to measure the percentage of time spent in each recognized function.

To accomplish this, the descriptive survey method was used. Six team leaders were "shadowed" by an. observer for a total of ten days. Record of all team leader activity was made on a specially prepared form which provided for classification of activity under Leino's six functions for the team leader. These are:

Statement of the Problem:

The problem in this study was to determine if a relationship exists between high urea nitrogen retention and a high arterial diastolic blood pressure or diseases that are usually associated with a high arterial diastolic blood pressure.

Method of Study:

The descriptive survey method was used. Data for this study were obtained by reviewing charts of all patients whose NPN was 150 mg. percent or over or whose BUN was 100 mg. percent or over. During the specified two year period the White Memorial Clinical Laboratory records revealed thirty-five patients as falling into this category.

The purpose of this survey was to ascertain factors which influence job satisfaction among the head nurse and staff nurse groups in a selected denominational hospital.

For this study the normative survey approach was used as the method of research. The SRA Employee Inventory put out by Science Research Associates, Inc., in connection with the Industrial Relations Center of the University of Chicago was the tool of research used to collect the data. Eighty-two professional nurses participated in the survey.

The study was conducted in an attempt to identify factors in the work situation which seemed to have had bearing on accidents involving nursing service employees, and to analyze and classify these factors for use in accident prevention and safety education activities. An accident was any sudden and unexpected event which resulted in a physical injury.

Literature was reviewed to study the findings of past studies in the area of hospital accidents, and to aid in the classification of the accident data which were applicable to nursing service personnel.

This has been a study in which it was attempted to determine the effect of slowly digesting food on the glucose tolerance curves of patients who had abnormal blood sugar levels.

The experimental method was used. Patients were selected by criteria which included certain symptomology and background of diabetic history. Fifty-two patients were prepared for glucose tolerance tests by a diet predominating in rapidly digested carbohydrates. This diet contained food which is commonly used in the American diet. The purpose of this pilot study was to find trends of needs of senior citizens which would be helpful to the community in planning for rehabilitative services. These needs were identified and described from data secured by personal interviews of 56 respondents, using a prearranged schedule. These respondents were 50 years of age and over who lived in and sought hospitalization in the Arrowhead United Fund Area. They were interviewed an average of 13 days following discharge from the three hospitals selected for the study.

The Bella Vista Hospital has had problems of staffing since it opened. Nurse shortages have been typical of all insular hospitals. There have been no national Seventh-day Adventist nurses available and no school where they could receive nursing education. The question has been raised whether it would be feasible to establish a school of nursing in connection with the hospital. This would give opportunity for Seventh-day Adventist young people who seek nursing education and would help prepare nurses to staff the hospital.

This study was conducted to find out if Paradise Valley School of Nursing is meeting certain specified objectives and to gather information which could help in future curriculum planning to better meet the needs of the students.

The normative-survey was the method used to gather data from graduates of the 1950-1957 classes. This group comprised those graduating from the three-year diploma program. A questionnaire was mailed to 149 graduates of which 124 responded.

Statement of the Problem: the purpose of this study was to find out the current faculty-student ratio in the medical-surgical area in collegiate school of nursing which were fully accredited by the National League for Nursing and the number of students with which instructors felt comfortable in their clinical instructions.

Method: the descriptive survey method with a questionnaire was used to collect data from the study. Eighty-six instructors returned the questionnaire.

It was hoped that the evaluation form could be used by administrators of nursing service as a basis for giving pay increases based on nursing performance.

The study was conducted in an attempt to identify incidents threatening the safety of patients in the care of operating room personnel and to classify them for use in teaching safety in operating room nursing.

Literature was reviewed to find concepts of safety and to aid in classification of safety hazards which are applicable to hospital patient safety. Need was shown for safe working conditions and for personnel with attitudes of safety as well as skills and knowledge.
