Differential Diagnosis Of Orofacial Pain I: Associated With Intracranial And Extracranial Structures And Psychogenic Disorders, Rodolfo Acosta-Ortiz

HPD Articles

The correct diagnosis is the principal base for an adequate management; in patients with DOF this may be a simple task or a very complex and frustrating experience for both, clinician, and patient. However, the clinician's knowledge of all possible pain condition that can affect the orofacial region can facilitate the diagnostic process. It is important to emphasize that is very difficult to diagnose something unknown for the clinician and even though "common things occur commonly", it is not …

This work is supported and managed through the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center-SBIR Program. LED-technology developed for NASA plant growth experiments in space shows promise for delivering light deep into tissues of the body to promote wound healing and human tissue growth. We present the results of LED-treatment of cells grown in culture and the effects of LEDs on patients’ chronic and acute wounds. LED-technology is also biologically optimal for photodynamic therapy of cancer and we discuss our successes using LEDs in conjunction with light-activated chemotherapeutic drugs.

Persistent Productive Epstein‐Barr Virus Replication In Normal Epithelial Cells In Vivo, Dennis M. Walling, Catherine M. Flaitz, C. Mark Nichols, S. David Hudnall, Karen Adler-Storthz Jan 2001

Persistent Productive Epstein‐Barr Virus Replication In Normal Epithelial Cells In Vivo, Dennis M. Walling, Catherine M. Flaitz, C. Mark Nichols, S. David Hudnall, Karen Adler-Storthz

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Productive Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) replication characterizes hairy leukoplakia, an oral epithelial lesion typically occurring in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Serial tongue biopsy specimens were obtained from HIV‐infected subjects before, during, and after valacyclovir treatment. EBV replication was detected by Southern hybridization to linear terminal EBV genome fragments, reverse‐transcriptase polymerase chain reaction amplification of EBV replicative gene transcripts, immunohistochemical detection of EBV replicative protein, and in situ hybridization to EBV DNA. EBV replication was detected in both hairy leukoplakia and normal tongue tissues. Valacyclovir treatment completely abrogated EBV replication in vivo, resulting in resolution of hairy leukoplakia when …

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini Dec 2000

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A possible cause for root canal failure is the persistence of bacteria that have colonized dentinal tubules. To reduce this risk and, if possible, to also shorten the time consuming endodontic therapy, new equipment and materials are constantly being introduced. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of disinfection of dentinal tubules by intracanal laser irradiation using an in vitro model. The groups irradiated by various lasers were compared with calcium hydroxide, a material frequently used as intracanal medication between appointments. Freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were used. The root cementum was removed and the teeth …
