Factors Correlated With Post-Orthodontic Treatment Gingival Enlargement, Erin Arnold Jan 2012

Factors Correlated With Post-Orthodontic Treatment Gingival Enlargement, Erin Arnold

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It has been established that gingival inflammation is exacerbated during puberty, in women taking oral contraceptives, and during pregnancy. Increased levels of sex hormones are implicated in the changes in periodontal conditions. It has also been established that treatn1ent with fixed orthodontic appliances presents a favorable situation for plaque accumulation, making oral hygiene more difficult to maintain. Therefore, it was hypothesized that adolescents receiving orthodontic therapy during their pubertal growth peak, might be more susceptible to gingival enlargement than those being treated outside of puberty. Orthodontists often seek to treat adolescent patients during their pubertal growth peak and utilize …

Patient Characteristics And Trends In Nontraumatic Dental Condition Visits To Emergency Departments In The United States, Christopher Okunseri, Elaye Okunseri, Joshua M. Thorpe, Qun Xiang, Aniko Szabo

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: We examined trends and patient characteristics for non-traumatic dental condition (NTDC) visits to emergency departments (EDs), and compared them to other ED visit types, specifically non-dental ambulatory care sensitive conditions (non-dental ACSCs) and non-ambulatory care sensitive conditions (non-ACSCs) in the United States.

Methods: We analyzed data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care survey (NHAMCS) for 1997 to 2007. We performed descriptive statistics and used a multivariate multinomial logistic regression to examine the odds of one of the three visit types occurring at an ED. All analyses were adjusted for the survey design.

Results: NTDC visits accounted for 1.4% …

Sexual Dimorphism In Periapical Inflammation And Bone Loss From Map Kinase Phosphatase-1 Deficient Mice, Justin Mcabee

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Mitogen Activating Protein (MAPK) kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) has been shown to be a key negative regulator of the MAP kinase pathways of the innate immune system. The impact of MKP-1 in an endodontic model has yet to be studied. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of MKP-1 in a bacterial-driven model of pathological endodontic bone loss. Methods: Pulps were exposed in both lower 1st molars of 10-week old Dusp-1+1+IMKP-1 +1+ and Dusp-1-1-IMKP-1-1- mice and left open to the oral environment for either 3 or 8 weeks. At sacrifice, mandibles were harvested and scanned by …

Improving Dental Visits For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders Through An Understanding Of Sensory Processing, Heather Miller Kuhaneck, Elizabeth Cipes Chisholm, Dmd Jan 2012

Improving Dental Visits For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders Through An Understanding Of Sensory Processing, Heather Miller Kuhaneck, Elizabeth Cipes Chisholm, Dmd

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that dental practices will be seeing patients with this diagnosis more frequently. Although patients with ASD have similar dental needs to other patients, the symptoms of the disorder may influence the ability of dental practitioners to provide necessary care. Dental professionals may be unaware of the difficulties with sensory processing common to patients with ASD. However, awareness of sensory processing issues and knowledge of strategies to improve the sensory experience for individuals with ASD may improve dental visits for these patients and allow for enhanced dental care provision.

Oral Health Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors: Investigation Of An Educational Intervention Strategy With At-Risk Females, Susan Romano Rustvold Jan 2012

Oral Health Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors: Investigation Of An Educational Intervention Strategy With At-Risk Females, Susan Romano Rustvold

Dissertations and Theses

A self-perpetuating cycle of poor health literacy and poor oral health knowledge and behavior affects approximately 90 million people in the United States, most especially those from low-income groups and other at-risk populations such as those with addiction. Poor oral health can result from lack of access to regular preventive dental appointments, lack of access to restorative care when dental diseases are treatable, and low oral health knowledge that leads to poor oral health self-care behaviors. In addition, patients' dental anxiety can impede care, because highly anxious people often avoid dental appointments. To address these issues, this inquiry examined oral …

A Study Of The Management Of Opioid Prescriptions Among Patients With A History Of Substance Abuse, Kara G. Veeder

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Prescription opioid abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the United States and has been declared an epidemic by the U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Immediate release (IR) opioids, especially hydrocodone and oxycodone, are abused or misused most commonly. Dentists are only second to family physicians in the number of IR opioid prescriptions written. Just under ten percent of the population in the United States in 2010 were classified with substance dependence or abuse in 2009. This study poses the following questions: 1. Do patients with a personal or family history of substance abuse manage prescription …

Tristetraprolin In Periodontal Homeostasis, Mary K. Gray Jan 2012

Tristetraprolin In Periodontal Homeostasis, Mary K. Gray

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Tristetraprolin (TTP) is a key RNA-binding protein that regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines post-transcriptionally by binding to adenylate-uridylate-rich elements (AREs) within the 3'-untranslated (UTR) region. TTP is encoded by gene zfp-36. During inflammation, the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway inactivates TTP by phosphorylation to inhibit its ability to shuttle mRNA to cytoplasmic degradation machinery. TTP knockout mice exhibit an inflammatory phenotype of arthritis, myeloid hyperplasia, and cachexia. We hypothesize that TTP directs cytokine expression in inflammatory bone loss during periodontal disease progression. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine if depletion of TTP affects alveolar bone loss …

New Statistical Methods For The Analysis Of Periodontal Data, Anthony J. Parker Jan 2012

New Statistical Methods For The Analysis Of Periodontal Data, Anthony J. Parker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Diagnostic (measurement) error is prevalent in medical research 16;22;29;31;37;43;54;69;79;81;89. Clinical studies in periodontology often produce large amounts of data subject to measurement error with potentially complex correlation structures 3;4;14;22;37;89. The periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) are measures often used to assess periodontal disease status. PPD and CAL are commonly used as covariates or in the calculation of covariates when investigating outcomes of interest in periodontal studies. Current methods of measuring PPD and CAL are prone to measurement error 22;37;59;89. It has long been recognized that when regressing on independent variables measured with error, the estimate describing …

Characterization Of Pleiotrophin And Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Beta/Zeta In Odontoblast And Osteoblast Cell Lines, Amena Tamkenath Jan 2012

Characterization Of Pleiotrophin And Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Beta/Zeta In Odontoblast And Osteoblast Cell Lines, Amena Tamkenath

All ETDs from UAB

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is an extracellular matrix-associated growth factor and chemokine expressed in mesodermal and ectodermal cells. It plays an important role in osteoblast recruitment and differentiation. PTN has two well-known physiological receptors, protein tyrosine phosphatase beta/zeta (RPTPRZ1), and N-syndecan. Protein tyrosine phosphatases are a group of enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is a common post-translation modification that can create novel recognition motifs for protein interactions and cellular localization, affect protein stability and regulate enzyme activity. Osteoblasts have recently been found to express the short transmembrane isoform of RPTP beta/zeta but nothing …
