Targeted Salivary Biomarkers For Discrimination Of Periodontal Health And Disease(S), Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Radhakrishnan Nagarajan, David Akers, Craig S. Miller

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Generally, clinical parameters are used in dental practice for periodontal disease, yet several drawbacks exist with the clinical standards for addressing the needs of the public at large in determining the current status/progression of the disease, and requiring a significant amount of damage before these parameters can document disease. Therefore, a quick, easy and reliable method of assessing and monitoring periodontal disease should provide important diagnostic information that improves and speeds treatment decisions and moves the field closer to individualized point-of-care diagnostics.

OBJECTIVE: This report provides results for a saliva-based diagnostic approach for periodontal health and disease based upon …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper investigated the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and precision of laser fluorescence and tactile probing for the detection of subgingival calculus. The gold standard for subgingival calculus detection has always been tactile probing. In this study 27 teeth were collected and 108 surfaces investigated, one tooth was excluded (group #13) where no calculus was observed on any surface, and three surfaces because of subgingival root caries to avoid confounding data, which left a total of 101 surfaces of 26 extracted teeth that meet the investigation criteria. The presence of subgingival calculus was observed on 75 tooth surfaces (74.25%). There was …

Can Dentistry Have Two Contracts With The Public?, David A. Nash Jul 2015

Can Dentistry Have Two Contracts With The Public?, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

The social contract is an implicit agreement between parts of society and society as a whole. Since the Middle Ages, the learned professions, recently including dentistry, have had a covenantal relationship with the public based on trust, exchanging monopoly privileges for benefiting the public good. Unlike commercial trade in commodities, professional relationships are grounded in ensuring an adequate level of oral health to all. A second contract is emerging where dentists relate to society as business operators, exchanging commodity services for a price. Recent actions by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Supreme Court make it unlikely that dentistry …

Changes In Composite Toxicity Following Exposure To Pulp Capping Materials, Audra Long Jul 2015

Changes In Composite Toxicity Following Exposure To Pulp Capping Materials, Audra Long

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Direct pulp capping involves placing a material over the exposed pulp in order to maintain its vitality. For decades, calcium hydroxide (CH) has served as the gold standard for this purpose, but its toxicity to the pulp may negatively impact treatment outcomes. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has become a popular alternative based partly on its excellent biocompatibility. Pulp-capped teeth are often restored with highly toxic composite materials, but the pulp capping material’s ability to alter these toxic effects has never been investigated. The purpose of this in vitro study is to determine the effects of Dycal, a CH-based cement, …

The Direct Effect Of Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Mechanical Vibration On Osteoclast Formation From Raw267.4 Monocytes, Maxwell Antonio Abraham Jul 2015

The Direct Effect Of Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Mechanical Vibration On Osteoclast Formation From Raw267.4 Monocytes, Maxwell Antonio Abraham

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Low-magnitude high-frequency (LMHF) mechanical vibration has been demonstrated to enhance bone formation possibly through inhibition of osteoclastogenesis of bone. Earlier research has demonstrated osteoclast formation from RAW264.7 monocytes was inhibited by a chewing cycle mimicking vibration through inhibition of dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein (DC-STAMP). We hypothesize that application of LMHF mechanical vibration directly inhibits osteoclast formation from RAW264.7 monocytes in a frequency dependent manner. RAW264.7 monocytes (ATCC) were cultured in alpha minimal essential medium (MEM) with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS ) and 1% Pen/Strep at 37°C and 5% CO2. The cells were seeded at a density of 2000 cells/well …
