Purpose: This study aimed to survey current 3^rd and 4^th year dental students, academic deans, and department chairs within U.S. dental schools to analyze the level of understanding; education; guidelines; and overall awareness regarding antibiotic use within dentistry and antimicrobial resistance.

Methods: A 25-question survey intended for 3^rd and 4^th year dental students and a 20-question survey intended for academic deans and various department chairs of U.S dental schools were each developed utilizing REDCap. The survey invitations were sent via e-mail to the current academic dean of each U.S. dental school for distribution.

In cases of compromised bone remodeling like osteoporosis, insufficient osseointegration occurs and results in implant failure. Implant retention relies on proper secondary fixation, which is developed during bone remodeling. This process is disrupted in metastatic bone diseases like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized low bone mass and bone strength resulting from either accelerated osteoclast-mediated bone resorption or impaired osteoblast-mediated bone formation. These two processes are not independent phenomena. In fact, osteoporosis can be viewed as a breakdown of the cellular communication connecting bone resorption to bone formation. Municipal water fluoridation began in 1945, and in the past 70 years, it appears to have decreased the rate of dental caries nationwide. Despite being deemed one of the top ten innovations of the 20th century, there continues to be misconceptions with this controversial practice. The intent of this thesis is to address some of the misconceptions with water fluoridation, and what possible solutions could be provided to alleviate the concerns. Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in the US and disproportionately affects racial/ethnic minorities. Caries is heritable, and though genetic heterogeneity exists between ancestries for a substantial portion of loci associated with complex disease, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of caries specifically in African Americans has not been performed previously.

Methods

We performed exploratory GWAS of dental caries in 109 African American adults (age > 18) and 96 children (age 3–12) from the Center for Oral Health Research in Appalachia (COHRA1 cohort). Caries phenotypes (DMFS, DMFT, dft, and dfs indices) assessed by dental exams were tested for association …

Aim: To evaluate the effect of pre-heating temperatures of a dual-cured adhesive and a dualcured resin composite as well as tubule orientation on micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) to dentin. The degree of conversion (DC%) of the adhesive and the composite was also evaluated at the different temperatures. Materials and Methods: For µSBS, 90 human molars were randomly divided into 18 groups (n=5) according to the three experimental factors. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of osseointegrated implants versus mucosal inserts used for retention of complete dentures. Materials and Methods: Twelve completely edentulous patients were selected for this study and divided into two groups of six. Group I received implant retained maxillary overdentures, while group II received maxillary overdentures retained by muchor zirconium mucosal inserts. Bone changes in both groups were evaluated using cone beam ct at insertion and after six and twelve months. Aim This prospective clinical study compared postoperative pain following single visit root canal treatment in patients with asymptomatic mandibular molar teeth with necrotic pulps using two different instrumentation techniques: multi-file rotary (ProTaper Universal), and reciprocating single-file (WaveOne) techniques.

Purpose: Color-blind racial attitudes and biases have been linked to racial prejudice which may potentially affect dental hygiene care to diverse patients. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the color-blind racial attitudes of dental hygiene students.

Methods: A 20-item, Color-Blind Racial Attitudes Scale (CoBRAS) electronic survey was sent to a convenience sample of 41 first-year and 30 second-year dental hygiene students (n=71) in a dental hygiene program in Virginia. The CoBRAS instrument measures contemporary racial attitudes and stereotyping in three subcategories: Unawareness of Racial Privilege, Institutional Discrimination, and Blatant Racial Issues. Slow orthodontic extrusion (SOE) for implant site development, was introduced in 1991. It has been more than 20 years since this treatment was applied in our clinical practice. In this paper, we investigate surgeon's expectation of SOE for special requirements of immediate implantation by a clinical case. We also review case reports/case series searched from PubMed and inspect the power of evidence of these reports from the integration of data collection, and try to define the value of SOE. If the SOE cannot eliminate at least one surgical procedure, we need to consider the necessity of SOE before implant surgery.

This case report describes the management of an adult patient presenting with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, mandibular protrusion, upper incisor proclination and mandibular arch spacing by a modified surgery-first approach. A 26-year-old man had skeletal Class III and dental Class III malocclusion with concave facial profile, midface deficiency and mandibular prognathism with chin deviation to left. His dental manifestation presented anterior crossbite, upper incisors proclination and spacing in his mandibular arch. Orthodontic treatment of a Class II malocclusion case with single maxillary central incisor was presented in the case report. The treatment plan consisted of removing one maxillary central incisor instead of premolars. Bilateral maxillary lateral incisors were mesialized for space closure and substitution for maxillary central incisors. The morphology of maxillary lateral incisors was modified to mimic the maxillary central incisors. After treatment, both occlusion and esthetics was improved, and the patient was satisfied with the results.

This case report described the management of congenital missing bilateral mandibular central incisors in a 16 years-old female patient who was diagnosed as Angle’s Class I molar malocclusion, canine Class II relationship by a treatment plan of orthodontic space regain. The options of fixed bridge, removable partial denture or dental implants to replace the missing teeth were well explained to the patient by prosthodontic consultation. After the orthodontic alignment, the treatment results demonstrated that the initial profile of the patient was maintained, the missing teeth was later replaced by removable partial denture. This 22-year-old female presents with skeletal Class III malocclusion, complicated by anterior cross bite, deep bite, and congenital missing of bilateral mandibular second premolars. The treatment modality was fullmouth fixed edgewise appliances. A favorable result of ideal overbite and overjet and closure of bilateral spaces of missing teeth were achieved. The patient was satisfied the improvement of function and esthetics after treatment.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) are Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria possessing several virulence factors that make them potential pathogens associated with periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, including gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and is considered one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum possess virulence factors that allow them to survive in hostile environments by selectively modulating the host's immune-inflammatory response, thereby creating major challenges to host cell survival.
