Objective: The study aimed to determine an association between dental caries and asthma among 12 to 15 years old children.
Methods: This is a school-based cross-sectional study conducted from January to February 2016. A random sample of 544 children aged 12 - 15 years were enrolled from five private schools of Karachi. Dental caries was assessed using DMFT Index (Decayed, Missing, Filled teeth). The main exposure variable was asthma and information on it was collected through the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire.

A growing body of literature suggests that there is a link between periodontitis and systemic diseases. These diseases include cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer, diabetes and insulin resistance, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as respiratory tract infection and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The presence of periodontal pathogens and their metabolic by-products in the mouth may in fact modulate the immune response beyond the oral cavity, thus promoting the development of systemic conditions. Oxygen plays a key role in human mesenchymal stem cell growth. Without adequate oxygen (hypoxic condition), cells are not able to survive, proliferate, and migrate. The objective of the present study is to investigate oxygen transfer through the cell-seeded scaffolds stored in static or dynamic bioreactors using a mathematical model. The effects of porosity, cell type, scaffold architecture and cell distribution as potential effective parameters on oxygen transfer kinetics were examined. The results suggest the substantial effect of porosity and cell type on the oxygen concentration within the scaffold compared to scaffold architecture (homogeneous vs. gradient). The obtained data …

Objective: Conventional cigarettes have shown severe toxicity on immune cells and wound healing in the periodontium, but little is known about the comparative effects of vaping or electronic cigarettes. In a substantial shift away from conventional cigarettes, vaping and e-cigarette sales have increased nearly 600% since 2017. If current conventional cigarette users are to transition to a less detrimental alternative, the evidence must demonstrate if electronic nicotine delivery systems can be deemed safer than conventional options.

The purpose of this study was to obtain faculty perceptions of the dental dam, quantify its utilization in their intramural faculty practice, and determine the factors that influence dental dam usage.

Background: There is an increase in the incidence and severity of mental health disorders in university students. Doctor of Physical Therapy students are at increased risk due to physiological, environmental, and generational factors. Design: Mixed-Methods, multi-site, descriptive study Participants: Current DPT students (N= 1228 ) completed a survey and DASS-42; 20 students demonstrating moderate severity on the DASS participated in telephone interviews. Methods: Surveys were emailed to 238 DPT program directors with a request to forward to students. Following the survey, a total of 20 interviews were completed. Most of the quercetin and kaempferol in plants is attached to sugar moieties rather than in the free form. The types and attachments of sugars impact bioavailability, and thus bioactivity. Combined Multi-Segmental Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment In Skeletal Class Iii With Facial Asymmetry And Gummy Smile: Two-Year Stability, Rouh-Hwai Wang, Hui-Ling Chen

This is a case of skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry, gummy smile, and maxillary canting, treated with bimaxillary surgery and orthodontic treatment. The two-jaw surgery was performed including a 3-pieces LeFort I segmental osteotomy, anterior segment impaction with clockwise rotation, and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies with genioplasty. Through the 2-year-4-month treatment procedure, the skeletal and occlusal relationship turned to be normal with esthetically pleasing smile and profile. Furthermore, in the two-year follow-up, we found the treatment results were quite stable no matter in skeletal or dental aspects.
