OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated use of a multipoint saliva analyzer to assess patient wellness in a contemporary dental practice setting.

STUDY DESIGN: Unstimulated saliva from a diverse 104 patient cohort was analyzed using the SillHa Oral Wellness System. The device measures the following 7 analytes present in the patient's oral rinse: cariogenic bacteria, acidity, buffer capacity, blood, leukocytes, protein, and ammonia. Data obtained were compared with validated clinical assessment data independently provided by credentialed dental professionals.

This 10-Minute EBD column explores the potential association between neoplasms and the risk of peri-implantitis in patients with dental implants. A case study involving a patient with a history of an ossifying fibroma raises questions about the impact of neoplasms on implant success. The literature search, conducted on PubMed, reveals relevant insights. The evidence suggests that ossifying fibromas, particularly with augmentation, may pose a risk for peri-implantitis. However, the direct causative relationship between neoplasms and peri-implant pathology remains unclear. Other risk factors such as periodontitis, foreign bodies, and augmentation procedures are also discussed in the context of implant complications.

Chronic Periodontitis (ChP) is an inflammatory condition that results from oral dysbiosis and host immune dysfunction. Epidemiologic evidence has shown that men are more susceptible to ChP than women. Despite gender differences in behavior and socioeconomic status influencing oral health, the biological sex-associated immunological mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ChP are unclear. Orthodontic tooth movement leads to remodeling of periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and gingiva. Tooth movement is characterized by bone deposition at sites of tension and bone resorption at pressure sites. Due to a sterile inflammatory process in the PDL space, a flow rate of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is increased and its composition is modified. Various cell-signaling pathways are activated, which ultimately stimulate PDL turnover. It plays an integral role in embryonic development, wound healing and cancer progression. Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by immune cell infiltration of the exocrine glands, mainly the salivary and lacrimal glands. Despite recent advances in the clinical and mechanistic characterization of the disease, its etiology remains largely unknown. Here, we report that mice with a deficiency for either Atg7 or Atg3, which are enzymes involved in the ubiquitin modification pathway, in the salivary glands exhibit a SjS-like phenotype, characterized by immune cell infiltration with autoantibody detection, acinar cell death, and dry mouth. Although the analytic protocols and parameters for micro-CT (μCT) analyses in mice are standardized for long bones, vertebrae, and the palms in aging mice, they have not yet been established for craniofacial bones. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine a university-based dental electronic health records (EHR) database to identify sedation-related adverse events (AEs) and assess patients' behavioral outcomes during routine pediatric dental sedations (PDSs) in a dental school clinic.

Methods: A database was screened for patients younger than 18 years old who had received dental sedation in 2019. Literature reviews and interviews with dentists working in rural Mississippi counties examined the effects of population decline on rural dental care in Mississippi. With the state’s continual population decline, loss of industry follows a loss of people. Through a cascade of effects, this can further reduce underserved areas’ access to dental care. In order to address the issue of rural Mississippi continuing to be underserved, policies need to be implemented that will make rural practice at least enticing if not desirable.

Background: The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) is significantly higher in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) compared to the general population. Studies have investigated the incidence of IE in adults with CHD to identify the factors that contribute to the development of IE. One such factor is suboptimal oral health. Several studies have shown that children with CHD have higher levels of untreated oral disease as compared to children without CHD.
