Activator Growth Augmentation : A Long-Term Perspective, William Emmerson Apr 1982

Activator Growth Augmentation : A Long-Term Perspective, William Emmerson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A sample of twenty-three activator treated patients, in the growth years up to age eighteen were evaluated at three time intervals, before treatment, end of treatment, and five years post-treatment. The average time period of the post-treatment evaluation period was 5.7 years after the end of active therapy. The patients' ages ranged from 8.4 to 13.3 years at the beginning of activator treatment.

In the correction of the Class II malocclusion, no other form of orthopedic mechanics were utilized in this sample. In some cases full banding was used to align and level the arches prior to the activator therapy. …

The Effects Of Second Molar Extractions In Conjunction With Bionator Treatment, Mohammed Toufic Jeiroudi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The intent of this paper is to evaluate the effects of second molar extractions in conjunction with Bionator treatments. Eighteen Orthodontic patients were used in this study. All had had second molars extracted. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were traced and used to evaluate the treatment. The average age at time of extraction was 13 years, 3 months. The average treatment time was 38.3 months.

There were some orthopedic changes. The convexity decreased significantly, the condyle axis increased more than expected in normal growth. Also, the lower facial height and facial axis both became more dolichotype (open).

The upper and lower incisors …

Aseptic Techniques Currently Used In Dental Hygiene Clinics Within Accredited Dental Hygiene Programs, Jan Shaner Greenlee

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this survey was to assess the aseptic techniques currently used in 197 accredited dental hygiene programs in the United States. A self-designed, 51-item questionnaire examined the aseptic techniques used in: (1) preparation of the dental hygiene clinic and unit, (2) instrument preparation, (3) preparation of the student practitioner, (4) preparation of the patient, (5) preparation of radiographic equipment, and (6) treatment of the hepatitis patient.

The questionnaire and a letter of transmittal were mailed to the clinical supervisor of each accredited dental hygiene program. Data were obtained from 173 returned questionnaires and analyzed via modal and percentage …

Force Loss In Retraction Springs At 37°C As Affected By Time, Roger Edward Clawson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Closed helix retraction springs fabricated from .016 X .016 inch Blue Elgiloy, Permachrome Standard stain less steel, and Multiphase orthodontic wire were tested at 37°C in their heat and nonheat treated condition to determine force relaxation properties. Electronic equipment consisting of load cells, regulated power supply, and an automatic recording device were used to measure force changes which occurred in the wire samples over a seven day period. A constant temperature was maintained by an ethylene glycol and water circulator. A temperature probe and an electronic thermometer monitored the 37°C water bath surrounding the wire samples. The data was graphed …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Median Lethal Dose Of Some Local Anaesthetic Preparations, Prasert Songkittiguna Jan 1982

Median Lethal Dose Of Some Local Anaesthetic Preparations, Prasert Songkittiguna

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

The median lethal dose (LD50) of local anaesthetics in mice was determined by the method of Reed & Muench. No statistical difference (P < 0.05) was found in comparing the (LD50) of the four commonly-used local anaesthetic preparations; they were lidocaine 2%, lidocaine 2% with adrenaline 1:80,000, lidocaine 2% with noradrenaline 1:50,000 and prilocaine 3% with felypressin 0.03 IU. It is suggested therefore that, in mice, the (LD50) of these local anaesthetics are comparable. However, lidocaine 2% with noradrenaline 1:50,000 had a wider therapeutic index, therefore it could be the safest local anaesthetic among the other three drugs.

Modulation Of Membrane Fusion By Calcium-Binding Proteins, K. Hong, Nejat Düzgüneş, Demetrios Papahadjopoulos

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The effects of several Ca2+-binding proteins (calmodulin, prothrombin, and synexin) on the kinetics of Ca2+-induced membrane fusion were examined. Membrane fusion was assayed by following the mixing of aqueous contents of phospholipid vesicles. Calmodulin inhibited slightly the fusion of phospholipid vesicles. Bovine prothrombin and its proteolytic fragment 1 had a strong inhibitory effect on fusion. Depending on the phospholipid composition, synexin could either facilitate or inhibit Ca2+-induced fusion of vesicles. The effects of synexin were Ca2+ specific. 10 microM Ca2+ was sufficient to induce fusion of vesicles composed of phosphatidic acid/phosphatidylethanolamine (1:3) in the presence of synexin and 1 mM …

The second section consisted of an opinionaire, in which, the dentist's attitude concerning the using of personal dental advertisements were evaluated. Through a third section, the number and percentage of responding dentists utilizing personal dental advertising, the type of advertisement being used, and the amount of monies being allocated for advertising were …
