Preventive Dental Care- Instruction And Contingency Management In The Acquisition And Maintenance Of Oral Hygiene Skills, Sandra K. Kallstrom
Preventive Dental Care- Instruction And Contingency Management In The Acquisition And Maintenance Of Oral Hygiene Skills, Sandra K. Kallstrom
Masters Theses
Inadequate oral hygiene is one of the largest problems facing the dental profession to date. It is estimated that 98% of individuals suffer from dental problems associated with neglect. The objective of this study was to develop effective techniques which aided in the acquisition and maintenance of oral hygiene skills. This study compared the effects of instruction and demonstration with contingency management on plaque percentage scores. A between-subjects design was used with one control and three experimental groups. The results indicated that, oral hygiene instruction and demonstration appear to be ineffective in reducing plaque scores. Significant plaque reductions where found …

The Periodontal Intraosseous Defect Following Root Conditioning With Citric Acid And Wound Closure Including A Ptfe Membrane : An Experimental Study, Betty Glaser Kersten
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Treatment of the intrabony or intraosseous periodontal defect has rendered much attention over the last few decades. Numerous approaches have been advocated; however, overall comparisons between treatments do not exist. This review summarizes and discusses outcomes of therapeutic modalities in the intrabony periodontal lesion from controlled clinical studies. The modalities reviewed include scaling and root planning, gingival flap surgery, gingival flap surgery including wound closure with interdental denudation, root-biomodification, placement of autologous, allogenic, or xenogeneic bone grafts, placement of alloplastic grafts, and placement of tissue guiding barrier membranes. In addition histologic observations of healing in the intrabony periodontal lesion are …

Effects Of Fluoride On Precipitation And Hydrolysis Of Octacalcium Phosphate In An Experimental Model Simulating Enamel Mineralization During Amelogenesis, M. J. Mura-Galelli, H. Narusawa, T. Shimada, M. Iijima, T. Aoba
Cells and Materials
The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of fluoride at low concentrations on the precipitation of calcium phosphates on hydroxyapatite seeds in media resembling the enamel fluid composition. To this end, we used a new crystal growth model adopting a miniaturized reaction column. Experimental solutions had the composition similar to that found in the enamel fluid, except for calcium concentrations which were adjusted at 1.0 and 0.5 mM. Precipitation reactions taking place in the system at the higher supersaturation ([Ca] = 1 mM) were characterized by co-precipitation of platelike OCP and rod-like apatite crystals, while the reaction at the …

Current treatments of disseminated infection caused by the Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex (MAC) are generally ineffective. Liposome- mediated delivery of antibiotics to MAC-infected tissues in vivo can enhance the efficacy of the drugs (N. Duzgunes, V. K. Perumal, L. Kesavalu, J. A. Goldstein, R. J. Debs, and P. R. J. Gangadharam, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 32:1404-1411, 1988; N. Duzgunes, D. A. Ashtekar, D. L. Flasher, N. Ghori, R. J. Debs, D. S. Friend, and P. R. J. Gangadharam, J. Infect. The kinetics of fusion of influenza virus (A/PR/8/34) with human promyelocytic leukaemia (HL-60), human T lymphocytic leukaemia (CEM) and murine lymphoma (S49) cells were investigated. Fusion was demonstrated by electron microscopy, and monitored by fluorescence dequenching of octadecylrhodamine incorporated in the virus membrane. Rapid fusion was induced upon mild acidification of the medium. At pH 5, all virus particles were capable of fusing with the cells. The initial rate and the extent of fusion were maximal between pH 4.9 and 5.2 and declined sharply below and above this range. The rate constants of adhesion of influenza virus to cells or …
