The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Children, Kerry Lewis Jan 1977

The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Children, Kerry Lewis

Dissertations and Theses

Measurement of maximum duration of phonation has been suggested by several voice experts as a clinical tool for assessing vocal function (Arnold, 1955; Irwin, 1965; Yanagihara, Koike and von Leden, 1966; and Boone, 1971). Most of the investigations of maximum phonation time have been conducted using adult populations. exceptions to this can be found in the studies by Launer (1971) and Coombs (1976). An apparent need, therefore, existed to investigate maximum phonation time in children.

The present study was designed to investigate the affects of age, sex, height, weight and vital capacity on the maximum duration of phonation of sustained …

A Quantitative Study Based On A Sonographic Examination Of Four Vowel Sounds In Alaryngeal Speech, Cheryl Ann Schultz Jan 1977

A Quantitative Study Based On A Sonographic Examination Of Four Vowel Sounds In Alaryngeal Speech, Cheryl Ann Schultz

Dissertations and Theses

Laryngectomy, as a treatment for malignant laryngeal lesions, requires the patient to seek a substitute method of producing speech. Three types of alaryngeal speech were described: esophageal, Asai, and artificial larynx. One consideration in deciding which mode of speech is best for the patient is how closely each type of alaryngeal speech approximates normal.

This investigation was an objective examination of esophageal, Asai, and artificial larynx speech as compared with normal in males and females.

The Assessment Of Interviewee Experience Of The Expressive And Interpersonal Meanings Of Interviewer Nonverbal Behavior, Carol Ann Bloom Aug 1976

The Assessment Of Interviewee Experience Of The Expressive And Interpersonal Meanings Of Interviewer Nonverbal Behavior, Carol Ann Bloom

Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the expressive and interpersonal functioning of nonverbal behavior within a dyadic relationship. A questionnaire derived from the Interpersonal Perception Method of Laing, Phillipson, and Lee (1966) was developed to assess the impact of an interviewer’s nonverbal behavior on the interviewee’s experience of herself, the interviewer, and their relationship.

To determine this impact and evaluate the usefulness of the instrument, two interviewer nonverbal behavior sets were defined. Two female interviewers interviewed a total of sixteen female interviewees for each behavior set, using the same verbal style and interview format throughout each one-time interview. The interviewees then filled …

Bekesy Audiometry In The Detection Of Nonorganic Hearing Loss, Paula Elizabeth Rotondi Jul 1976

Bekesy Audiometry In The Detection Of Nonorganic Hearing Loss, Paula Elizabeth Rotondi

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Numerous investigators have utilized Bekesy audiometry in the detection of nonorganic hearing loss. The efficiency with which Bekesy audiometry detects nonorganicity has varied according to the method of Bekesy test administration and the definition of the Type V nonorganic pattern. Rintelmann and Harford’s Type V definition and the LOT- (Lengthened Off-Time) Bekesy test have emerged as valuable nonorganicity detectors. However, more recent research (Citron & Reddell, 1976; Sedge, 1974) has found these methods to be considerably less worthwhile than originally reported, The first purpose of this study was to devise an efficient means for utilizing Bekesy audiometry in the detection …

This study investigated the effects of stimulus type on the measurement s of short-term auditory memory span and short-term auditory memory for sequence to determine if span and sequence measures were the same within each of five subtests and if span and/or sequence measures varied across all five subtests. A total of forty-five normal second, third, and fourth grade subjects were individually administered the Auditory Memory Test Battery (AMTB) which consisted of five tape-recorded tests of recall for digit sequences, unrelated word sequences, related word sequences, nonsense word sequences, and sentences. The subjects responded verbally to the randomly presented subtests. …

Shared Perceptions Between College Teacher And Student, Mary West Otero Apr 1976

Shared Perceptions Between College Teacher And Student, Mary West Otero

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The Problem. Previous research concerned with teacher-student relationships indicates that teacher accuracy of perception about students facilitates effective teaching; however, most studies focused exclusively on teacher perceptions of students' affective dimension. Given college professors' interest in students' cognitive dimension, the purpose of this investigation was to compare the accuracy of perceptions between professors and students at the University of New Mexico about students' cognitive and affective dimensions. Procedure. Twenty-one male professors and 180 students at the University of New Mexico completed a questionnaire based on the Interpersonal Perception Method (IPM) adapted from Laing, Phillipson, and Lee (1966). The 21 professors, …

Dissertations and Theses

Primarily this study sought to investigate growth of syntactical skills in language delayed children enrolled in the Monterey Language Program (MLP) (Gray and Ryan, 1973a) in several Portland Public Schools during the 1974-75 school year. The Programmed Conditioning for Language Test (PCLT) (Gray and Ryan, 1973a) and the Northwest Syntax Screening Test (NSST) (Lee, 1970) were administered and pretest scores compared to posttest scores. A comparison group was administered the same test; their growth in syntactical skills as measured by the PCLT and NSST was compared with the growth of the experimental group. A secondary purpose of this investigation was …

The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Normal And Hoarse Voiced Children, Jo Coombs Jan 1976

The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Normal And Hoarse Voiced Children, Jo Coombs

Dissertations and Theses

Hoarseness seems to be the primary type of voice disorder occurring in school-aged children. Voice experts have suggested measurement of maximum phonation times as a clinical tool for assessing vocal function (Fairbanks, 1940; Westlake and Rutherford, 1961; Irwin, 1965; Boone, 1971). Most of the studies on duration of phonation have used adults as subjects; few investigations have involved children. An apparent need, therefore, existed to investigate duration of phonation in young children.

A Study Of The Relationship Between Articulation Proficiency And Auditory Conceptualization Ability, Alana Fenwick Bradley

Dissertations and Theses

This investigation compared the auditory conceptualization ability (Lindamood and Lindamood, 1970) or vocal phonics (Van Riper, 1963) of third grade students with and without articulation deficits in an attempt to determine if a relationship exists between auditory conceptualization ability and articulation ability. The specific question posed was: Is there a statistically significant difference in auditory conceptualization ability between third grade children with various degrees of articulation deficits and third grade children without articulation deficits.

Oral Sensation And Related Vocal Parameters As A Function Of Age, Jayne P. Merrill Jul 1975

Oral Sensation And Related Vocal Parameters As A Function Of Age, Jayne P. Merrill

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Previous research has established relationships between chronological age and performance on an oral stereognostic task and between chronological age and perceived age estimates. Based on these findings, it is plausible that a relationship may exist between perceived age estimates and performance on an oral stereognostic task. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship, if any, between perceived age estimates and oral stereognostic performance. In addition, as all previous research in these two areas had utilized male subjects only, male vs. female performance on oral stereognosis was also examined. To substantiate previous findings, the relationship between perceived age estimates …

A Comparison Of Language Delayed And Non-Language Delayed Children On A Dichotic Cv Syllable Listening Task, Mary Sharon Nilson Jul 1975

A Comparison Of Language Delayed And Non-Language Delayed Children On A Dichotic Cv Syllable Listening Task, Mary Sharon Nilson

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Numerous investigations have reported that normal listeners show a right ear preference for dichotically presented speech stimuli. This preference depends on the fact that the left hemisphere is dominant for speech. Performances of non-language delayed children tend to reveal the expected right-ear advantage, even though inter-subject variability is observed. Language delayed subjects exhibit rather unpredictable performances ranging from a lack of ear preference to a left-ear advantage. The primary purpose of this investigation was to compare the performance of a group of language delayed children with a group of non-language delayed children, on a dichotic CV syllable listening task. The …

Test-Retest Performance Of Males And Females On A Verbal Dichotic Listening Task, Linda Kay Johnson Jul 1974

Test-Retest Performance Of Males And Females On A Verbal Dichotic Listening Task, Linda Kay Johnson

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Previous research has established that when two speech signals are presented dichotically, normal listeners tend to report those stimuli presented to the right ear more accurately than those presented to the left. This has generally been interpreted as reflecting the primacy of contralateral auditory pathways and left hemisphere dominance for language function. Although many dimensions of the dichotic listening procedure have been subjected to experimental manipulation, little attention has been directed toward the investigation of performance differences between males and females or the reliability with which listeners perform. The present study was designed to examine these two areas more closely, …

The Effect Of Favorable Video Feedback On A Person's Self Concept, Antonio B. Rey Jul 1974

The Effect Of Favorable Video Feedback On A Person's Self Concept, Antonio B. Rey

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Previous research concerned with the relationship between video feedback and self concept indicates that video feedback can affect a person’s perception of self. Based on self concept theories which suggest that positive or negative evaluations from others tend to become self-evaluations, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of video feedback, self-appraised as favorable, on o person's self concept.

Masking Patterns Of High Frequency Pure Tones, Judith Eide Widen Mar 1974

Masking Patterns Of High Frequency Pure Tones, Judith Eide Widen

Dissertations and Theses

Previous investigations of masking have established that the action of the masking tone spreads upward in frequency, creating significantly more masking (threshold shift) above the masker frequency than below. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the masking pattern produced by high frequency pure tones, heretofore uninvestigated.

Masking patterns were obtained for nine normal hearing young adults utilizing the method of adjustment. The masking produced by an 11000 Hz pure tone of 40 dB sensation level was measured at three frequencies above and three frequencies below the masker frequency. Analysis of the data revealed a downward spread of …

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg Dec 1973

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The notion of cerebral dominance has been explored since the time of Broca. Two non-invasive techniques designed to assess hemispheric dominance have subsequently been developed. These two methods are commonly referred to as dichotic listening (simultaneous auditory stimulation) and rapid visual field stimulation (tachistoscopic viewing).

It has been found in dichotic listening studies that when verbal material is presented simultaneously to both ears, the stimuli are correctly identified most often in the right ear. Similar results have been found in tachistoscopic studies, with verbal material eliciting a right visual field advantage. Collectively, these findings have been used to support a …

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks Dec 1973

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Normal listeners traditionally show a right ear preference for dichotically presented speech stimuli, and a left ear preference for dichotically presented non-speech stimuli. Although some inter-subject variability is observed within and between groups of non-brain damaged subjects, the performance of the group as a whole is rather predictable and homogeneous. However, results from experiments in which brain damaged subjects have been studied have been less straightforward. Although left brain damaged subjects have consistently shown a bilateral deficit in reporting dichotic speech stimuli, a great deal of variability in performance is observed within the groups. Further study of brain damaged individuals, …

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Speech Reception Threshold Measurement, Richard Allen Oge Aug 1973

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Speech Reception Threshold Measurement, Richard Allen Oge

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

In an attempt to discover the current methods being utilized in clinical audiology, Martin and Pennington (1971) surveyed a large number of audiologists concerning their administration of the hearing tests available to them. One of the findings of this survey indicates that a number of different procedures are being used to obtain the speech

reception threshold (SRT). This fact strongly suggest that the SRT estimate obtained on a given subject may vary between clinics, not because of the subject's hearing sensitivity but because of the audiologist and his procedure of acquiring this measure.
