Effectiveness Of Visual Perceptual Learning On Inter-Therapist Reliability Of Lumbar Spine Mobilization, Chad E. Cook Jul 2003

Effectiveness Of Visual Perceptual Learning On Inter-Therapist Reliability Of Lumbar Spine Mobilization, Chad E. Cook

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Manual therapy is a widely used treatment technique among physical therapists and is effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The theory behind the selection of the appropriate grade of mobilization dictates that proper assessment of the stiffness or resistance of a joint must occur in order to assign the therapeutic intensity. Educational models to teach this theory have shown variable success. In numerous studies, the reliability of clinicians' assessment of stiffness and movement assessment is poor. This present study involved a pre-perceptual educational model designed for 22 practicing physical therapists that performed Grade I, II, III and IV mobilizations …

Physiotherapy In Australia - Where To Now?, Janet C. Struber Jul 2003

Physiotherapy In Australia - Where To Now?, Janet C. Struber

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The physiotherapy profession in Australia appears to have been caught unawares by the rapidly changing demography of health services and now seems to lack a clear identity and vision. Despite being a highly competitive profession to enter, attrition rates are high. This paper reflects on the history of physiotherapy in Australia and the dichotomy of paradigms it now faces, and suggests a possible option for the future, given that existing physiotherapy roles appear difficult to sustain in our current health care climate.

E-Health: A New Approach In Healthcare Practice, Vinod K. Podichetty, Robert S. Biscup

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The Internet offers an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare information to be disseminated instantaneously. Quality of information, both scientific and nonscientific, and the development of tools to disseminate information securely via the Internet are the two most important issues related to achieving effective and wider exchange of health information. For the first time ever, information can be exchanged simultaneously and interactively all around the world, with the potential of being equally available to healthcare professionals as well as to patients. The big difference between yesterday's knowledge-based patient care and that of tomorrow, is a fundamental premise that patients will explore the …

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon Jul 2003

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patients contact a myriad of different health care personnel in their trek through the American health care system. In the 1950s on the numerous TV shows about medicine, it was easy to discern “who was who” in the health care cast of characters in these portrayals. The physicians, like Dr. Kildare, were always male, clean cut and serious looking. Nurses wore starched white dresses with nursing caps and distinctive pins; they instantly obeyed the doctor’s orders (including the one to make the doctor a cup of coffee). For better or worse it is a different world now than it was …

Inactivation Of Picornaviruses And Caliciviruses Part 1: Biology And Epidemiology, Suphachai Nuanualsuwan, Dean O. Cliver

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Foodborne picornaviruses and human calicivirus have one molecule of linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA, covered by a capsid without a lipid envelope. These viruses have a spherical shape, a particle diameter of 27-40 nanometers and the triangulation (T=3) icosahedral symmetry of a capsid. The replication cycle of poliovirus (PV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) occurs in the cytoplasm of the host cell. The viral proteins are synthesized by the translation of RNA after the virus particles attach and uncoat at the host cell membrane. Major translated proteins are structural protein (capsid protein) and functional proteins e.g. proteases and RNAdependent RNA polymerase. …

Cytokine Profiles Following Mycoplasma Hyopneumoniae And Prrsv Co-Infection In Pigs, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Eileen L. Thacker

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Bronchoalveolar cells collected by lung lavage 28 days post infection (DPI) of negative controls, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo)-infected, Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome virus (PRRSV)-infected and dual-infected pigs, were evaluated for various cytokine mRNA (IL1α, IL1β, IL6, IL8, IL10, IL12, and TNFα). Semiquantitative RT-PCR revealed that IL1β, IL6, IL10 and the IL12 mRNA expression was significantly increased in dual-infected pigs, compared with the negative controls. PRRSV-infected pigs had significantly increased levels of IL10 and IL12 mRNA. The increased IL10 gene expression that was observed in the dual infected pigs may play a role in the potentiation of PRRSV-induced pneumonia by …

The Role Of Immune Cells In The Sow Endometrium During Different Stages Of The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, Kampon Kaeoket Jun 2003

The Role Of Immune Cells In The Sow Endometrium During Different Stages Of The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, Kampon Kaeoket

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Approximately 30%(range 13-49%) of sows are culled due to fertility disturbances. Reproductive failure on farms are due to anoestrus, repeat breeding (regular and irregular return to oestrus), negative pregnancy diagnosis, abortion or failure to farrow. Reproductive problems are often difficult to diagnose. As a diagnostic tool, post-mortem examination (i.e. macroscopically and histologically) of the reproductive organs is useful when sows with reproductive failure are culled. The present review provides information about the distribution of immune cells, both in non-inseminated and inseminated pregnant sows endometrium, in order to be able to differentiate a physiological distribution of immune cells from pathological conditions. …

The Management For Myofascial Trigger Points, Chang-Zern Hong, Emerson Meng-Fong Jou, Ta-Shen Kuan, Shu-Min Chen, Jo-Tong Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Myofascial pain syndrome is very common in clinical practice. It is characterized by the existence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), which is a hypersensitive spot in a taut band of skeletal muscle fibers. In general, active MTrPs should be treated conservatively (non-invasive treatments including physical therapy) prior to the consideration of aggressive therapy (invasive treatments including injection and surgery). The most important strategy of MTrP therapy is to find out the etiological lesion that causes the activation of MTrPs and to treat the underlying pathology. If the treatment of underlying etiological lesion is not appropriate, the MTrP cannot be inactivated …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Allergic reactions to wasp stings range from large local reactions to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Of the anaphylactic shock occurring outside the hospital, wasp stings was concluded to be the second cause following drug allergy. Cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attack have been reported in the setting of acute anaphylactic shock due to wasp stings. However, there are fewer reports about the presentation of large vessels occlusion outside the brain after wasp stings. Here we report on a woman suffering from a stroke and right above-knee amputation after a severe wasp sting. We had a literature review in the light of the …
