Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective Masticatory efficiency play a major role in the digestive system which directly affects physical health. Therefore, evaluation of masticatory efficiency is very important, especially patients wearing dentures. Masticatory ability is an individual judgement of his or her masticatory function. Masticatory performance is the capacity to reduce size of food when chewed for given strokes of chewing before swallowing. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcome between the masticatory ability and masticatory performance in the elderly patients wearing dentures in evaluating the masticatory efficiency. Material and methods 62 elderly patients wearing complete dentures (CD) or removeable partial …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the pulpal blood flow in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by using laser Doppler flowmeter Materials and methods The animal model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (i.v. injection of STZ 55 mg/kg BW) was used. Thirty-two male Spraguep-Dawley rats weighing 200-250 g were divided equally into 2 groups; non-diabetes (CON) and diabetes (STZ). At 12 weeks (wks) and 24 wks after the STZ injection, the laser Doppler flowmeter (Model ALF 21, USA.) was used to measured pulpal blood flow of the right lower incisor while the animals were anesthetized with an intraperitoneal injection …

Inactivation Of Picornaviruses And Caliciviruses; Part 2: Inactivation, Suphachai Nuanualsuwan, Dean O. Cliver

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The prevention of human fecal contamination of food and water is an effective measure to control the transmission of foodborne disease viruses e.g. hepatitis A virus (HAV) and calicivirus found in food chains and water systems. If the prevention of virus contamination is not successful, one of the most common critical control points in the food industry is the inactivation of viruses that contaminate the food or water. The objective of inactivation is to modify the virus or make it abort in the next replicative cycle. The efficiency of inactivating agents is measured by the plots of "logarithmic scale of …

Functional Disability In Patients Of Right Hemisphere Lesions With And Without Hemineglect, Her-Cherng Wang, Chau-Peng Leong, Jui-Kun Chang, Hsiu-Juan Lin, Kwo-Shieng Tuo, Kai-Lan Chang, Sheng-Hsiang Su Sep 2003

Functional Disability In Patients Of Right Hemisphere Lesions With And Without Hemineglect, Her-Cherng Wang, Chau-Peng Leong, Jui-Kun Chang, Hsiu-Juan Lin, Kwo-Shieng Tuo, Kai-Lan Chang, Sheng-Hsiang Su

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hemineglect is a common symptom and sign in patients with right hemisphere lesion. These patients usually have problems of reduced awareness of stimuli from left side. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between presence of hemineglect and functional disability in patients with right hemispheric stroke or traumatic brain injury. Forty patients who were diagnosed as right hemispheric stroke or traumatic brain injury as verified by computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance image participated in the study. Based on the criteria on Schekenberg test (line bisection test), patients were divided into two groups: 20 with hemineglect and 20 without hemineglect. …

The Study Of Gastro-Intestinal Helminthes In Native Chicken And The Efficacy Of Mebendazole Against The Helminth Parasites, Suwanee Nithiuthai, Sudchit Chungpivat, Woraporn Sukumavasi

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

During 1996-1999, two thousand gastrointestinal tracts from native chicken sold in the avian market, Klongtoey, Prakanong, Bangkok were randomly examined for adult helminthes. The worms were identified and classified into 3 groups, according to their taxonomy. Intestinal flukes comprised of Echinostoma (1.0%), Prosthogonimus (0.1%) and Notocotylus (0.1%). Tapeworms were Amoebotaenia (0.5%), Cotugnia (2.1%), Diorchis (0.1%) Hymenolepis (0.9%) and Raillietina (14.5%). The last category was nematodes, which were in 5 genera : Ascaridia (7.2%), Capillaria (1.0%), Gongylonema (4.1%), Heterakis (9.4%), Strongyloides (0.4%) and Tetrameres (1.1%). Concurrent infections with 2 to 7 species of parasites were commonly found. Later in 2001, the …

The Expression Of Oestrogen And Progesterone Receptors In The Gilt Uterus At Different Stages Of The Oestrous Cycle, Sayamon Sukjumlong, Kongkiat Srisuwatanasagul, Adisorn Adirekthaworn, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Ovarian steroid hormones are known to be an important modulator in the regulation of reproductive function in the female. The levels of oestrogen and progesterone have been well documented whilst interacting during the entire oestrous cycle but their specific receptors in the target cells are less understood. Therefore, a comparative study of oestrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) at certain oestrous stages should be of help in the prediction of their interaction in specific uterine compartments. Tissue samples were collected at different stages of the oestrous cycle: oestrus (n=3), early dioestrus (n=3) and late dioestrus (n=3). They were fixed in …

The Effect Of Chronic Heat Stress On The Urinary System Pathology Of Broilers, Worapol Aengwanich, Suchint Simaraks

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Thirty six, one day old broiler chicks were obtained from a commercial hatchery. They were brooded for 20 days before being placed in layer cages, with a wire floor, at 26-28oC, for a 7 day adaptation period. On day 28, the broilers were transferred into environmentally controlled housing, at 26-28oC, and were subjected to heat stress for 5 hrs, at a temperature of 33±1oC, each day, for 21 days. Fifteen birds were then randomly killed by cervical dislocation for macroscopic and microscopic examination of the urinary system. The results revealed that the ureters in 9 out of 15 broilers showed …

The faecal egg counts were done by using the Stoll’s dilution, egg counting technique. The sheep were injected with ivermectin (Ivomec®) (0.2 mg/kg) subcutaneously. Three weeks later, faecal samples were collected and examined to determine the outcome of the treatment. It was found that strongyles and Trichuris ovis eggs were absent. It was concluded that Ivomec® showed good efficacy for the treatment of some gastrointestinal nematodes in this study …

Sperm samples were collected at 25-28oC from the caudal epididymis, 0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 hours, after the castration of 75 fertile dogs (1-10 years old). Progressive motility and viability of the epididymal sperm decreased over a period of time, after the collection. The epididymal sperm motility was 82.3±6, 76.3±8, 72.0±7, 60.3±9, and 22.7±20% while the percentage of viable spermatozoa was 85.5±5, 78.8±7, 77.5±7, 64.4±7, and 27.1±21 at 0, 1, 3, …

Telehealth: A Model For Clinical Supervision In Allied Health, Thomas W. Miller, Jean M. Miller, Deborah Burton, Rob Sprang, Jeanine Adams

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Telehealth technology and services have gained the attention of both clinicians and researchers examining trends and models of health care for underserved populations. Examined is a model where professional supervision for interns and other professionals may be achieved through an integrated model using onsite and telehealth technology. Examined is a model of telehealth service delivery, the interface of clinical supervision and health care and a model for supervision of allied health interns in rural placements.
