The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The goal of this study was to generate production indicies for evaluating cow and farm production efficiency. The milk yields from cows on 10 farms in the Khonkaen province were recorded. The data were transformed into a value depicting standard milk production and subsequently calculated to show the average standard milk production of each farm and an average for all farms. These data were used to calculate 2 production indecies: 1) a cow production index, calculated by dividing the cow standard milk production figure with the average standard milk production for the farm, and 2) a herd production index, calculated …

Milk Yield Characteristics Of Karakaş Sheep, Orhan Karaca, Nurhan Akyüz, Seval Andi̇ç, Tufan Altin Jan 2003

Milk Yield Characteristics Of Karakaş Sheep, Orhan Karaca, Nurhan Akyüz, Seval Andi̇ç, Tufan Altin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Milk yield and composition were determined in a total of 85 Karakaş ewes (Akkaraman breed). The data were collected from Yüzüncü Yıl University, Agriculture Faculty's Practice Farm and a rural farm near the University. Lactation length, average daily milk yield and total milk yield were 155.9 ± 4.3 days, 529.6 ± 31.6 ml and 84.7 ± 5.1 l, respectively. Milk fat, total solid and mineral percentages were 7.09 ± 0.25%, 19.75 ± 0.66% and 0.93 ± 0.03%, respectively. The differences between farms were significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01) for lactation length, average daily milk yield, total milk yield and milk fat percentage. The milk yields of ewes reared in rural farms were lower. In addition, the correlations between a number of characteristics were significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01).

Effect Of Some Environmental Factors On Milk Yield Traits In A Brown Swiss Herd Reared At The Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal, Mehmet Çolak, M. Emi̇n Teki̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to investigate milk yield traits and some environmental factors affecting milk yield traits in Brown Swiss cattle reared at the Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute. Between 1987 and 1998, 730 lactation records obtained from 273 cows were evaluated. The least-squares means of measured milk yield, 305-day milk yield, dry period and lactation duration were 3631 kg, 3332 kg, 97.1 days and 313.8 days, respectively. Both year and age statistically affected (P < 0.01-0.001) milk yield and lactation duration, but the calving season was not affected (P > 0.05). The effect of the year on dry period was also significant (P < 0.01), but the effect of age and calving season were not significant (P > 0.05).

The Level Of Inbreeding And Its Effects On Milk Yield, Age At First Calving And Calf Mortality In Holstein Cattle Reared On The Agricultural Faculty Farm Of Ege University, Can Uzmay, Yavuz Akbaş Jan 2003

The Level Of Inbreeding And Its Effects On Milk Yield, Age At First Calving And Calf Mortality In Holstein Cattle Reared On The Agricultural Faculty Farm Of Ege University, Can Uzmay, Yavuz Akbaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the inbreeding coefficient of 1535 Holstein calves born on the Agricultural Faculty farm of Ege University during the period 1980-2000 was calculated, and the change of inbreeding levels over the years was investigated. Furthermore, the effects of inbreeding on first lactation 305-day milk yield, age at first calving and calf mortality were examined. The mean inbreeding level of calves born in the investigated period was 1.89%. The level of inbreeding in the herd fluctuated from 0% to 4.37% according to the birth years of calves. Furthermore, over the last 3 years of the period (1998-2000) inbreeding steadily …
