Exercise And Dehydration In The Horse, Prawit Butudom

The intensity and duration of exercise has a major impact on fluid levels, electrolytes and acid-base balance in the horse. The changes range from rapid fluid and electrolyte shifts which accompany high-intensity exercise (VO2 max ≥ 100%) (i.e., racehorse) to substantial fluid and electrolyte depletion during Speed and Endurance Tests as seen at Three-day events. Depletion is also seen during prolonged endurance exercise, in which the horse performs a low-intensity form of exercise (30-60% VO2max). These fluctuations of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis have been implicated in the development of fatigue and can lead to medical problems when exercise is continued …

The hematological values of 50 Siamese Tiger Fish, with an average body length of approximately 30 cm were: hematocrit, 24.4±5.6%, RBC, 4.0±0.9x106 cell/μl. and WBC, 32.4±10.3x103 cell/μl. From a thin blood smear, the results of a differential cell count were: lymphocytes, 85.8±4.6%, monocytes, 10.1±4.2% and granulocytes, 4.1±3.2%. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The scanning electron microscope features of the zona pellucida of immature porcine oocytes, preserved in hypertonic salt solution, for 7, 14, 28 and 56 days, were compared with the features of fresh immature oocytes. The outer zona pellucida layer showed two principal patterns. The first showed a network, with a spongy appearance and containing numerous pores, while the other had a more compact and smooth structure, with fewer pores. The aim of this study was to measure some of the variable parameters of canine pelvic bones and to make a comparision between the sexes. Eighteen variable measurements of pelvic bones from 34 adult dogs (18 female and 16 male) were studied. Kidneys from a forty year old, female, Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) were subjected to a gross anatomical study (measurements, dissection, parasagittal sections and photography), histological examination, and ultrasonographic images. The kidney had an elliptical to ovoid shape with a size of 32x21x12 centimeters (length, width, and thickness). It was of multilobar or multipyramidal type, composed of 8 lobes, closely placed and separated by interlobar septae, some of which were perforated by minor interruptions. Inadequate Physician Knowledge Of The Effects Of Diet On Blood Lipids And Lipoproteins., Mary M. Flynn, Chris N. Sciamanna, Kevin C. Vigilante

BACKGROUND:To assess the nutrition knowledge of physicians on the basic effects of diet on blood lipids and lipoproteins.

METHODS:Anonymous mailed dietary knowledge surveys to 6000 randomly selected physicians in the United States licensed in either Internal Medicine or Cardiology.RESULTS:Response rate: 16% (n = 639). Half of the physicians did not know that canola oil and 26% did not know olive oil were good sources of monounsaturated fat. Ninety-three percent (84% of cardiologists vs. 96% of internists; p < 0.001) did not know that a low-fat diet, in general, would increase blood triglycerides. Approximately three-quarters (70% of cardiologists vs. 77% of internists; p < 0.01) did not know a low-fat diet would decrease HDL-c and almost half (45%) thought that a low-fat diet would not change HDL-c.

CONCLUSIONS:If physicians are to implement dietary and cholesterol management guidelines, they will likely need to become more knowledgeable about nutrition.

Objective: The risk of stroke and death associated with carotid endarterctomy is operator dependant. Data regarding risks of this procedure are not available in Pakistan and therefore it is difficult to make accurate risk benefit analysis for individual patients. Our objective was to determine safety of carotid endarterectomy at an academic tertiary care center in Pakistan.

Methods: Patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA) at our hospital during a ten-year period were identified through ICD-9 coding system of the hospital medical records. Demographic features. associated medical problems and immediate postoperative complications were recorded and analyzed.

The aim of this study was to obtain data on predisposing factors, causative organisms and their associated mortality and complications related to acute bacterial meningitis.

Methods:

The chart review of all patients in whom acute bacterial meningitis was diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital from January 1995 through December 2001.

Results:

One hundred ninety-four patients were included in study. There were 146 males and 48 females. The mean age of our study population was 41±12.3 years. Objective: Frequency of ischemic stroke subtypes is influenced by ethnic and geographic variables. Our objective was to identify various stroke subtypes and its determinants at a tertiary care hospital.

Methods: We prospectively collected data on ischemic stroke subtypes admitted to The Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi.

Results: A total of 596 patients were enrolled in 22 months in the Aga Khan Universtiy Stroke Registry. These included 393 patients with Ischemic stroke, 126 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, 50 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage and others. The fear of falling can have detrimental effects on physical function in the elderly population, but the relationship between a persons' confidence in the ability to maintain balance and actual balance ability and functional mobility is not known. The extent to which balance confidence can be explained by balance performance, functional mobility, and sociodemographic, psychosocial, and health-related factors was the focus of this study.

This study compared the effectiveness of an anterior repositioning device, the Silent Nite®, to two new treatments in their ability to stop/reduce snoring. Comfort and side effects of each treatment were also evaluated.

Twenty-three subjects, in good medical condition along with their spouse/partner participated in the five-week study. A disposable sleep apnea screener, SleepStrip,™ was used to select only non-sleep apnea patients. We conducted this study to determine the perceived value of certification in perioperative nursing. Following development and pilot-testing, we mailed the 18-item Likert-type instrument, the Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT), to a sample of 2750 perioperative nurses who had earned the CNOR or CRNFA credential or both. A total of 1398 surveys were returned (50.8% response rate). Factor analysis extracted three factors, accounting for 61% of the variance: personal value, recognition by others, and professional practice. Internal consistency reliability testing (Cronbach's α) identified a standardized α of .924. Over 90% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with statements about …

The present invention provides a general method to retard the precipitation inception time for poorly water-soluble camptothecin analogues from a supersaturated solution by a chemical conversion approach via pH alteration. This method is successfully utilized to prepare stable parenteral formulations for silatecan 7-t-butyldimethylsilyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (DB-67), a poorly water-soluble lipophilic camptothecin analogue, in aqueous solutions containing β-cyclodextrin sulfobutyl ether (SBE-CD) or other solubilizing agents. The formulations manufactured by this method are more simple and cost-effective, of higher doses and better quality in terms of manufacture loss and formulation stability, and can be free of organic solvents (e.g., DMSO or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone).

Background— Data remain sparse on women’s prodromal symptoms before acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study describes prodromal and AMI symptoms in women.Methods and Results— Participants were 515 women diagnosed with AMI from 5 sites. Using the McSweeney Acute and Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey, we surveyed them 4 to 6 months after discharge, asking about symptoms, comorbidities, and demographic characteristics. Women were predominantly white (93%), high school educated (54.8%), and older (mean age, 66±12), with 95% (n=489) reporting prodromal symptoms. The most frequent prodromal symptoms experienced more than 1 month before AMI were unusual fatigue (70.7%), sleep disturbance (47.8%), and …

Studies of air pollution and human health have evolved from descriptive studies of the early phenomena of large increases in adverse health effects following extreme air pollution episodes, to time-series analyses and the development of sophisticated regression models. In fact, advanced statistical methods are necessary to address the many challenges inherent in the detection of a small pollution risk in the presence of many confounders. In this paper we introduce a semi-parametric regression model for estimating the difference in the expected value of two positive and highly skewed random variables as a function of covariates. Our method extends Smooth Quantile Ratio Estimation (SQUARE), a novel estimator of the mean difference of two positive random variables, to a regression model.

The organisational principles of locomotor networks are less well understood than those of many sensory systems, where in-growing axon terminals form a central map of peripheral characteristics. Using the neuromuscular system of the Drosophila embryo as a model and retrograde tracing and genetic methods, we have uncovered principles underlying the organisation of the motor system. We find that dendritic arbors of motor neurons, rather than their cell bodies, are partitioned into domains to form a myotopic map, which represents centrally the distribution of body wall muscles peripherally. While muscles are segmental, the myotopic map is parasegmental in organisation. It forms …

As the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) enters its sixth year of operation, states have continued their commitment to children’s coverage and to reaching out to the uninsured. This issue brief explores the current status of SCHIP in light of fiscal pressures that have been created by the state budget crisis. It highlights some of the key successes in the program thus far and notes several examples of state initiatives to serve particularly vulnerable populations and collect outcomes data and information about access to care.

In medical studies, it is often of interest to characterize the relationship between a time-to-event and covariates, not only time-independent but also time-dependent. Time-dependent covariates are generally measured intermittently and with error. Recent interests focus on the proportional hazards framework, with longitudinal data jointly modeled through a mixed effects model. However, approaches under this framework depend on the normality assumption of the error, and might encounter intractable numerical difficulties in practice. Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site.
