The Lived Experience Of Welfare Reform In Drug-Using Welfare-Needy Households In Inner-City New York, Eloise Dunlap, Andrew Golub, Bruce D. Johnson Sep 2003

The Lived Experience Of Welfare Reform In Drug-Using Welfare-Needy Households In Inner-City New York, Eloise Dunlap, Andrew Golub, Bruce D. Johnson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform has transformed a needs-based family income support into temporary assistance for persons entering the workforce. This paper uses observations from an ethnographic study covering the period from 1995- 2001 to examine the impact on drug-using welfare-needy households in inner-city New York. The analysis suggests that studies may underestimate the extent to which substance use is associated with welfare problems. Nearly all of these already distressed households lost their AFDC/TANF benefits, had difficulty with work programs, and were having more difficulty covering expenses. The conclusion highlights ways to better study this population and policy initiatives that could help them …

The Diagnosis Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis And Associated Rehabilitation Issues: A Casereport, Chih-Gang Chang, Chen-Liang Chou, Shun-Ping Cheng, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan Sep 2003

The Diagnosis Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis And Associated Rehabilitation Issues: A Casereport, Chih-Gang Chang, Chen-Liang Chou, Shun-Ping Cheng, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology. Even though it is uncommon, there are cases seen. Thus it is important for clinicians to understand and catch the key points to its diagnosis. Patients with ALS would usually present with the combination of upper and lower motor neuron symptoms and signs. When the typical combination was found in several anatomic areas in an elderly man especially, the diagnosis is direct. We must also note that at early stage of ALS, the patient can present predominantly with either upper or lower motor neuron symptoms and signs confining only …

Posttraumatic Pelvic Lymphocele: A Casereport, Nai-Chiung Huang, Sen-Yung Liu, I-Ru Chen, Ta-Sen Wei

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The development of pelvic lymphocele is usually a complication following renal transplantation as well as pelvic lymphadenectomy for gynecologic or urologic cancers. Pelvic lymphocele after blunt trauma is rare described before. Asymptomatic patients are managed with observation and follow-up imaging studies. Symptomatic lymphoceles need to be treated by means of percutaneous needle aspiration or drainage. We reported a case of low back pain after a fall with delayed onset of ispilateral thigh swelling. Computed tomography revealed a fluid-filled mass in the pelvis. After treatment by CT-guided percutaneous aspiration, all symptoms rapidly resolved without recurrent symptoms in 6 months follow-up.

The Social Problem Of Depression: A Multi-Theoretical Analysis, Rich Furman, Kimberly Bender Sep 2003

The Social Problem Of Depression: A Multi-Theoretical Analysis, Rich Furman, Kimberly Bender

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the social problem of depression from a multi-theoretical perspective. It explores depression through the lens of two psychologically based theories of human behavior, existential theory and cognitive theory, as well as through the vehicle of two sociological theories, Marxist theory and the theory of oppression. By understanding how each of these theories explains depression, social workers may be helped to see the complexity of treating the problem. It is the belief of the authors that social work literature, which is often dominated by reductionist, quantitativelybased research studies, has increasingly ignored theoretical explorations …

Reattachment Of The Crown Fragment In Anterior Teeth: 2 Cases Report, Maliwan Vongsittajarn, Suchada Wattanaburanon

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Reattachment of a crown fragment to its origin could be an alternative in the restoration of a fractured crown caused by a traumatic accident of anterior teeth, particularly when such fragment is still available. The method is considerably conservative and could be done immediately, either as a temporary or permanent restoration, by using resin composite material and its bonding system. The process is not time-consuming and quite economic, and gives rise to a restoration of original color, shape and function. This study report two cases of patient in which successful results have been obtained after one-year follow-up.
