INTRODUCTION Several herbaceous species have shown promise as feedstocks for energy production. The University of Florida/Gas Research Institute co-funded program has tested herbaceous species since 1981. Tall grasses such as corn (Zea mays L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.], napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) are among the most efficient plants in converting solar energy to biomass (Schank, 1987). All have shown promise as feedstocks for energy production with average annual yields of 20 to 40 metric tons/ha (Prine et al., 1988). Quackgrass [Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski] is a common weed in temperate climates throughout most of the world (King, 1966). Its ability to aggressively spread by rhizomes makes it uniquely capable of colonizing large areas of pastures or cultivated fields (Palmer and Sagar, 1963). Genetic variation among domestic forms of quackgrass has been demonstrated for many traits, including several rhizome growth traits (Westra and Wyse, 1981; Williams, 1973). The objective of this study was to determine selection responses following one cycle of divergent phenotypic selection for plant diameter in a population of Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski accessions.

Many thousands of tropical and sub-tropical grass and legume accessions are to be found in germplasm banks in Australia (Tropical Forages Genetic Resources Centre), Colombia (CIAT), Ethiopia (ILCA) and other countries, but most are poorly categorized in terms of their climatic, edaphic and biotic adaptation. In contrast, a number of ecosystems in the developing world are poorly served with pasture varieties capable of sustaining high levels of animal production. Forage yield is the resultant of a cumulative effect of its component characters. In the procedure of developing a high forage yielding variety, a determination of major forage yield components appears obligatory for a breeder to gear up an efficient selection programme. Since the manifestations of forage yield components, expectedly, may vary with the change of situations these were, therefore, worked out across the environments artificially created at a single location (Luthra et al., 1974) in Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.). The consistency of correlations and path was used as a criterion to single out most important yield component(s).

Distant hybridization can be used to combine the characteristics of different species and genus to produce a new variety. By crossing the wild species Melissutus ruthenicus C.W. Chang (2n = 2x = 16) which exhibits cold-, drought- and salt-alkali resistance with the local high-yielding cultivar Medicago saliva Zhaodong (2 n = 4 x = 32), it was hoped to synthesize the fine characteristics of two parents, to obtain a new intermediate variety of alfalfa. En France, le Ray-Grass d'ltalie (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) (RGI) est l'espece de graminees fourrageres la plus utilisee. Pres de 1 million d'hectares sont cultives en pur ou en association avec du trefle violet. Parmi Jes principales maladies foliaires, la Rouille couronnee (Puccinia coronata Corda) (R.C.) occasionne des degiits importants sur la plupart des varietes commercialisees. Cette etude resume le travail realise par notre Societe pour ameliorer la tolerance du RGI vis-a-vis de ce parasite et montre l'interet du materiel ainsi cree pour !'adaptation a notre milieu, le rendement et la qualite du fourrage.

Punjab is a part oflndo-Gangetic plain with sub-tropical climate. Due to fertile alluvial soil, assured irrigation and small holdings intensive agriculture is in practice. Sudangrass (Sorghum sudenense Piper Stapf) is one of the most important annual fodder crops in Kuestan plain (Southwest of Iran). The plant has been cropped in the region for more than 25 years. However, the data are scant on the yield potential and management practices of different cultivars under these hot climates where the growing season ranges from 150 to 180 days. Kaschani and Bahrani (1985) in Ahvaz, and Summer et al. (1965) in California, respectively showed 400-600 kg/ha and 178.4 kg/ha of nitrogen as split application for irrigated sudangrass. Because of the potential importance of common vetch, Vicia sativa L., as a forage legume to replace fallow in the cereal/fallow rotations in the Mediterranean region, it is of great importance to increase seed yield and reduce seed prices. Sainfoin ( Onobrychis sativa Lam) is a fodder crop of modest requirements since it grows on eroded, shallow and dry soils, which are abundant in Yugoslavia, especially in Bosna and Herzegovina and Macedonia. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and other perennial grasses cannot be used profitably in the typical Mediterranean environments of Italy because of the inability of the existing varieties to survive the severe summer droughts. The need for grassland farmers to reduce financial inputs, together with a growing concern for the environment have resulted in a resurgence of interest in white clover. Most new forage tall fescues (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) are being marketed as low Acremonium coenophialum MorganJones and Garns cultivars. However, the breeding techniques and objectives used in the development of these new cultivars were similar to those used prior to the discovery of A. coenophialum in tall fescue (Pedersen and Sleper, 1988). The low A. coenophialum status of many new cultivars was produced accidentally, or by seed treatment after breeding work was completed. In the irrigated plains of Lombardy (Italy) permanent meadows are continuously eliminated and replaced with maize. This imposes the collection and conservation of Lolium italicum and other species typical of these meadows (dactylis, bromus spp. etc.). Many expeditions were made by the Forage Crops Institute of Lodi, together with English colleagues as well as colleagues from Belgium, Holland, Japan and France. At present, Lolium italicum is extensively used as catch crop, sown in autumn and harvested in spring, before sowing maize. After the constitution of the cv Sacromonte the breeding work on berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) at the Forage Crop Institute of Lodi was slowed. A renewed interest in nitrogen fixing legumes in recent years has led to a program aimed at reevaluating the berseem clover. Today this crop is utilized not only in South Italy (autumn sowing) but in North Italy as well and in some Central European countries (spring sowing). The greatest utilization is in Egypt where berseem is grown either for forage crop or for green manure crop, usually preceding cotton or summer vegetables.

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) is a forage legume that attracts interest due to its feeding value to ruminants. This is based on factors such as hight voluntary intake, non-bloating and protein protection, all of which appear related to the concentration of condensed tannins in the plant tissue (Ulyatt et al., 1977). The largest constraint in breeding temperate grasses is the efficiency of selection. This is related to the complex combination of desired characters which ensures persisting productivity. Selection usually starts with spaced plants, later followed by progeny tests in sown swards. The applicability of selection among spaced plants for characters to be expressed under heavy competition in the grass sward has often been debated. Seasonally flooded lands with a high water table (varzea) constitute a significant portion of the Cerrados. It is estimated that there are 30 x 106 ha of hydromorphic soils in Brazil and 12 x 106 ha of these varzea lands are situated in the Cerrados (Goedert, 1986). Paspalum is a predominantly American genus, it contains c. 250 species, most of which are good grazing grasses and several of which are adapted to wet situations. Between 1974, when IBPGR was established as an autonomous centre in the CGIAR system, and 1988, IBPGR has been responsible for ensuring the collection and conservation of significant genetic resources to the world's germplasm collections.

Material from Mediterranean latitudes has been used in New Zealand breeding programmes to improve cool season growth potential (Barclay, 1960; Rumball, 1982). To augment the material available for use in breeding programmes in New Zealand, Spain and France, seed was collected from old pasture in south Spain, coastal and inland Portugal, northwest Spain, central and north Italy (Forde and Easton, 1986). This paper gives results of 68 field collected samples of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) from the above regions grown in New Zealand in comparison with control cultivars and for 94 samples from northwest Spain grown in France …

Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn (crested wheatgrass) is indigenous to central Asia including parts of the USSR, China, Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran (Bore, 1970). It is a perennial tufted grass which often grows naturally on stony slopes and calcareous soils. In very hot dry periods it tends to remain dormant but renews its growth as soon as its moisture supply returns to normal. It also survives the coldest temperature encountered in its area of adaptation (Rogler, 1960). The Dactylis glomerata L. autopolyploid complex is very diverse and includes at least 15 diploid (2n = 2X = 14), 3 main natural tetraploid (2n = 4X = 28) and one hexaploid subspecies (2n = 6x = 42), each having a distinct phenotype and geographical distribution. The diploids are generally each confined to a single habitat (Borrill, 1978 ; Lumaret, 1988). In contrast, the three major 4X subspecies are generally distributed over a wide range of habitats and are favoured by man's activity (cultivation).
