Seombadi (Dystaenia takesimana [Nakai} Kitagawa) is a member of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family and is ecologically adapted to the island of Ulneung, situated 160 km off the east coast of the Korean peninsula. Because germination of green panic seed was unstable, a series of tests were performed to establish methods for obtaining better germination of this seed earlier than usual after it is harvested. In this report key points of the methods formulated are described. Seed ripened at 21 °C showed a higher germination percentage in its early age ( 4 months after harvest) than that ripened at 25°C or 29°C. Excellent early age germinations were realized by drying seed slowly immediately after harvest, especially by spending as much as a month gradually drying seed at 20°C and stirring every few days. Green needlegrass is commonly used in range seedings in the northern Great Plains in the United States (U.S.). Because of its potential as a revegetation species a series of experiments were conducted to determine 1) germination requirements; 2) capacity of seedlings for emergence and root growth following dehydration; and 3) influence of planting depth, seed source and temperature on seedling emergence and morphology. A variety of sources of green needle grass seed were used in growth chamber experiments following standard procedures. The laboratory experiments with aqueous extracts of 11 tropical grass stubble-residues allowed an examination of the allelopathic effects of the extracts on seed germination and early growth of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, cv. Minamiwase, Abbr. as IRG). Germination of IRG was generally found to be reduced with an increase in concentration of the residue extracts. Extracts of African millet (Eleusine coracana), Guinea grass (Panicum maximum, strain GR-171) and setaria (Setaria anceps, cv. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) are commonly grown together in pastures of the southeastern USA. Allelopathy of tall fescue may reduce white clover germination and growth during establishment of the legume. The objective of this study was to determine if white clover genotypes differ in germination and initial growth in extracts of tall fescue leaves. Agar containing leaf extracts from tall fescue was used to test the germination and root growth of forty white clover genotypes. The self-regenerating annual pasture legumes, mainly Medicago spp. (medics) and Trifolium spp, (clovers), are important components of annual pastures on millions of ha in the mediterranean climatic zones of the world. We have shown that tillage practices for cereals and other crops have a severe effect by reducing legume density and productivity after a cropping sequence. Deep-burial of pasture legume seed by disc ploughing and mouldboard ploughing is most detrimental, as a high percentage of seed is buried too deeply to allow emergence, while normal scarifying at 6-8 cm causes little loss of potential legume seed germination and seedling emergence. …

Scarifying pasture legume seed to reduce hard seed content can improve pasture establishment. A heated, rotating cylinder suitable for treating large quantities of seed was used to test the effect of a range of heat doses (measured in cumulative degree-seconds of treatment above 90°C and expressed as degsecs>90°C) on seed of fine-stem stylo (Stylosanthes gulianensis var. lmermedla), Heat doses ranged from O to 1500 degsecs>90°C, A heat dose of 450 degsecs>90°C, achieved by heating seed at 120°C for 15 seconds in the cylinder, gave the highest germination without increasing the proportion of dead seed. Inadequate gennination has often been obseived when planting Poa pratensis L. cv. Lavang (69°N) in northern Norwegian grasslands. This investigation was intended to elucidate whether this was due lo long­term seed dormancy, Seed-lots grown in different years in northern and southern Norway and stored at O-to•c, were germinated in Jakobsen­type germinators al various combinations of temperature and light. The study was conducted to determine the appropriate time of final culling (closing) for fodder to optimise the seed yield and seed quality in berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum L.). Based on 2 years' experimentation, the maximum seed yield was obtained when the final cut for fodder was taken in mid•March and the crop was then closed for seed. A strong, positive correlation was found between 1000-seed weight (TSW) and germination in chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) cv. Grasslands Puna. Low TSW tended to be associated with empty or immature seed; empty seed was associated with exclusion of bees. No significant differences in seed characteristics were found between seeds harvested from different positions (top, middle or bottom third) on the plant. Optimum harvest lime was 4 weeks after peak flowering.

Seed development studies showed that seed maturity in plantain (Plantago lanceolata L,) occurred 6 weeks after anthesis; maximum seed yields were obtained 8 weeks after anthesis. This is consistent with the fact that seed heads take approximately 17 days to complete flowering. Fertiliser nitrogen increased plantain seed yield. Time of closing, timing of nitrogen application and different stand densities did not significantly affect seed yield, probably because plantain can adapt to and compensate for the treatments imposed.

Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) seeds were treated before sowing with polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) under different PEG concentrations, treatment period and temperatures, and tested for uniformity of germination, establishment and drought tolerance. Suitable seed coating materials were found that improved emergence, establishment and seedling growth when surface sown on established swards. The best primed or coated seeds in germination tests were surface sown in growth cabinet and field.Osmotic priming with PEG accelerated germination of chicory and significantly reduced time taken for germination compared with coated seeds in Petri-dishes, but not in the field. Selections were made within 10 cultivars of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) for rapid germination rale al 4°C. There were 2 selection cycles and progeny from crosses between genotypes selected from within cultivars were compared wilh the original unselected cultivar seed lines for ability to germinate at 4°C. There ·was significant variation among control cultivars and among selected lines for germination rate index at 4°C. Cultivars from northern Europe had a higher germination rate index than cultivars from New Zealand, Australia and Israel. A field experiment examined seed production and autumn germination of subterranean clovers (Trifolium subterraneum L.) In an area of New Zealand with a mean annual rainfall of 62S mm and dry summers. In the fourth autumn, out of 42 accessions, only 10 produced more than the 1000 seedlings/m2 and had seed reserves in excess of the 240 kg/ha considered necessary for success. The available information on interactions between this species and forage grasses and legumes is summarised and discussed. Nodding thistle inhibits pasture productivity, and allclopathy is probably Important at inhibiting pasture at the later stages of its life cycle. Although, nodding thistle is most susceptible to inhibition by forage species early in its life cycle, a minimum pasture cover may be required for seedlings to establish. Fifteen new guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq) hybrids, widely variable in flowering cycles, were tested for eleven seed quality parameters: seed viability (tetrazolium)-TZ; normal germination (with and without previous chemical scarification)-TG and NG; presence of viable seeds after the germination tests- RSTG and RSNG; seed dormancy-DTG and DNG; germination rate-TGR and NGR and seed vigor (after accelerated aging test) -AATG and AANG. The genetic materials used presented no significant differences for tetrazolium seed viability. The aim of this study was to determine the germination conditions as well as an approach to seed quality of five native grasses of the humid Argentine Pampa prairie: Bothriochloa laguroides, Sporobolus indicus, Glyceria multiflora, Briza subaristata and Chaetotropis imberbis. They are considered as good and very good forage species. Mature inflorescences were sampled in Brandsen (Flooding Pampa sub-Region, Buenos Aires province, Argentina) from December, 1994 to March, 1995.
