This study investigated the effect of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) added to urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin on particleboard production and its effects on the properties of the boards. The Na-CMC/UF was prepared at the selected blending levels of 0/100, 5/95, 10/90, 15/85, 20/80, 25/75, 30/70, 35/65, 40/60, 45/55, and 50/50. In the production of test panels, 55% coniferous and 45% broadleaved wood chips were used. The physical and mechanical properties of the particleboard panels were determined and evaluated. In addition to environmental conditions and cultural practices, plant factors, particularly morphological parts, have a significant effect on the yield and feed value of roughages. However, no studies have been conducted for this purpose on quinoa grown for hay production. Assessment Of Pretreatments On Drying Kinetics And Quality Characteristics Of Thin-Layer Dried Red Pepper, Bi̇ge İncedayi

In this study, the effect of pretreatments (hot water blanching, microwave blanching, and ohmic heating (OH)) on the drying kinetics and quality characteristics of red pepper, dried at 60 and 70 °C, was investigated. The drying times varied between 205-290 min, depending on the pretreatment and temperature applied. The drying rate also changed based on the pretreatment and the falling rate period was observed. Fitted to the experimental data were 4 mathematical models and the logarithmic model was found to be the best for all of the samples. The present study reports on the isolation of viable protoplast from ovule-derived embryogenic calli of Volkameriana (Citrus volkameriana L.), which is a rootstock in high demand for lemon production.Ovules of C. Volkameriana isolated at 3 different immature fruit stages, comprising4, 8, and 12 weeks after anthesis (WAA), were cultured on5 different media in order to produce embryogenic callus lines as a source material for protoplast isolation. Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Plant community responses to environmental changes depend upon management strategies, climate, topography, and time. The objective herein was to determine canopy coverage and botanical changes in Turkish highland rangelands with different topographical characteristics between 1993 and 2013. Trends in the plant composition changed depending on the slope aspect (compass direction) and topography. The contribution of the grasses to the canopy decreased, while that of legumes and the other families increased. The results indicated that rangeland degradation occurred under uncontrolled grazing conditions. Suitable range management changes are recommended for the conservation of natural resources in the highland rangelands of Turkey.

With an annual global production of approximately 25 million tons, the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L), a member of the genus Phaseolus, is one of the major protein sources used as food for humans. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the genome size of the common bean genetic resource collection (154 common bean accessions) in Turkey by flow cytometry (FCM) and determine whether geographical variables affected the genome size. In addition, the number and distribution of 5S and 45S ribosomal DNA loci were designated by performing a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis in some of the accessions. …

Turkey is one of the world's leading producers in both in fresh and dried apricots, and Malatya Province is the capital for apricots. In the present study, the fruit of 13 apricot cultivars (Adilcevaz, Alkaya, Aprikoz, Çataloğlu, Hacıhaliloğlu, Hasanbey, İsmailağa, Kabaaşı, Mahmuduneriği, Soğancı, Şam, Şekerpare, and Tokaloğlu-Erzincan), grown together at the Apricot Research Institute in Malatya Province, were harvested and evaluated for some important physicochemical and bioactive characteristics. Introduced exotic species have a tendency to become invasive and impact local biological communities. Invasions often impact community attributes such as cover and species richness, but these factors may also regulate patterns of invasion. In such cases, impacts may be dependent on the invasion context. We used data from the Buell-Small Succession Study, a long-term permanent plot study in the piedmont region of New Jersey, to document context dependency in invasion. Although present in nearly any wild space with available moisture and on a wide variety of substrates, lichen, and its importance as a bioindicator for an ecosystem, is often overlooked. As air pollution becomes a greater concern for flora, fauna, and even humans, the story told by lichen growth becomes more useful as we try to make sense of the downstream effects of anthropogenic contributions to poor air quality. The world's largest known clone of aspen (Populus tremuloides), called the "Pando Clone" is located in the Fishlake National Forest in central Utah. For many decades, significant pressure from ungulate (deer and cattle) browsing has prevented growth of young aspen stems in to trees that would replace the mature trees as they die of natural causes. There has been concern that this impressive 104-acre Pando Clone could be lost altogether due to the excessive browsing of young aspen stems. The role of thiamine (THI)-induced nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in the improvement of tolerance to boron (B) toxicity in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was studied. A solution of THI (50 or 100 mg L-1) was sprayed to the foliage of pepper plants exposed to high B regime (2.0 mM H3BO3) once a week for 4 weeks. A scavenger of NO (0.1 mM), cPTIO, along with THI was sprayed once a week to ascertain whether or not endogenous NO played a role in the alleviation of B stress in pepper plants by THI. It is important to understand how woody species are affected by elevated in-soil CO2 for carbon capture and storage (CCS). A study was conducted to analyze the effects of artificially released in-soil CO2 on the physiology and growth of 4-year-old Pinus densiflora and 3-year-old Quercus variabilis seedlings. Approximately 7.9 kg CO2 plot-1 d-1 was released at a depth of 0.5 m over the period from 20 June to 20 July 2017. For both species, chlorophyll fluorescence and content, photosynthetic rate, and leaf size significantly decreased after the CO2 release. The chemical composition and the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of essential oils from two Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G.Don subspecies grown in Bulgaria were investigated. As a result, 95 compounds with concentrations above 0.05% were detected by GC/MS and 46 of them, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenes, representing 79.81% and 85.51% of the total content of the samples, were identified. The main constituents of the essential oil from Helichrysum italicum subsp. microphyllum (plant origin from Bosnia) were monoterpene α-pinene (20.84%) and sesquiterpene γ-curcumene (16.53%), followed by β-selinene (5.59%), ar-curcumene (4.39%), trans-caryophyllene (4.35%), β-diketone italidione I (4.32%), α-selinene (4.28%), and neryl acetate (3.81%). …

In this study, changes in some horticultural characteristics of jujube fruits at two ripening stages were investigated. The ripening stages were determined by reference degree (%) of the red zone on the surface of the fruit: white ripening stage (WR), 5-15%; red ripening stage (RR), 95-100%. Fruit weight, length, width, color, and firmness were examined as morphological characteristics; phenolics, organic acids, fatty acids, and sugars were evaluated as biochemical characteristics. Many sources of woody biofuels provide alternative options to fossil fuels that can help mitigate greenhouse gases. One key component of feedstock sustainability from an ecosystem service perspective is soil sustainability. We examined eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis) plantations in the warm-temperate entic and mollic soils of Northeastern Argentina, oil palm plantations (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in the tropical alfic soils of Southeastern Mexico, and aspen (Populus tremuloides) in the cool-temperate spodic soils of Northeastern United States. The USFWS is working collaboratively with State Wildlife Agencies, Universities, Non-profits and others in the southeast to address the National Listing Workplan. The USFWS needs up-to-date information on current status and the likely impact of future changes to develop Species Status Assessments (SSAs), which help inform listing decisions. States, Universities and other partners are providing species expertise, location data, analytical support and logistical support (e.g. surveys). However, a significant knowledge gap remains in understanding potential species distributions, from which status surveys can be more strategically implemented. Across much of North America, moose populations (Alces alces) are declining due to disease, predation, climate, and anthropogenic pressures. Despite this, populations of moose in Colorado have continued to grow. Studying successful (i.e., persistent or growing) populations of moose can facilitate the continued conservation of the species by identifying habitat features critical for moose persistence.

Capsicum is one of the most important and diverse plant taxa, widely used as a spice and vegetable worldwide, including Turkey. Germplasm characterization is an essential step for crop breeding. In the present study, we characterized the genetic diversity and population structure of a collection of 94 pepper accessions using inter-primer binding site (iPBS) retrotransposon-based markers. The cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi (Madzhidov) Stelter is an important yield-limiting soil-borne pathogen of wheat- and barley-growing areas, particularly in the semiarid regions throughout the world. In Turkey, cyst nematodes have been detected in several localities of wheat- and barley-growing areas. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of initial population densities (Pi) of Heterodera filipjevi on yield of susceptible (Seri-82) and resistant (Silverstar) wheat cultivars and to investigate nematode reproduction on wheat under rainfed conditions in Bolu Province in Turkey. This study compared the extraction efficiency of 3 different techniques, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwaveassisted extraction (MAE), and the classical extraction method, in obtaining some bioactive and allergen compounds, namely liquiritin (LQ), glycyrrhizin (GL), glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), and carbenoxolone (CBX), from liquorice samples of Glycyrrhiza glabra grown in Turkey.
