Metric equations are presented to predict the volume of wood and/or biomass contained in individual loblolly (Pinus taeda, L.) and slash (Pinus elliottii, Englem.) pine trees growing in unmanaged pine plantations in east Texas. Taper equations are also presented for both species that describe tree form in metric units.

Informal Project Reports

A fifteen-year stumpage price update and analysis for pine and hardwood in East Texas are reported. Thepricesofsawtimberandpulpwoodare presented for both pine and hardwood plantations by using 1988 to 2003 stumpage prices from the Texas Forest Service and Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Timber prices increased steadily from 1988 to the late 1990's, peaked, then declined into 2003 for both Louisiana and Texas. Louisiana prices, though, have remained higher than those for Texas.

Red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) adaptation to fire-maintained southern pine ecosystems has involved several important interactions: (I) the reduction of hardwood frequency in the pine ecosystem because of frequent tires, (2) the softening of pine heartwood by red heart fungus (Phellinus pini) that hastens cavity excavation by the species, (3) the woodpecker's use of the pine's resin system to create abarrier against rat snakes (Elaphe sp.), and (4) the woodpecker as a keystone cavity excavator for secondary-cavity users. In 1998, we measured the effects of Hurricane Georges after it passed over long‐term research sites in Puerto Rican dry forest. Our primary objectives were to quantify hurricane effects on forest structure, to compare effects in a large tract of forest versus a series of nearby forest fragments, to evaluate short‐term response to hurricane disturbance in terms of mortality and sprouting, and to assess the ability of hurricanes to maintain forest structure. We sampled damage from 33 plots (1.3 ha) across a 3000‐ha tract of forest as well as in 19 fragments. For stems with 2.5‐cm minimum diameter, 1004 stems/ha …

Conservation buffers are designed to reduce sediment and agrichemical runoff to surface water. Much is known about plot and field scale effectiveness of buffers; but little is known about their watershed scale impact. Our objective was to estimate the watershed scale impact of grass buffers by comparing sediment and agrichemical losses from two adjacent 141-165 hectare watersheds, one with conservation buffers and one without. Rainfall derived runoff events from 2002-2003 were monitored for water runoff, TSS, phosphorous and atrazine loss. Through many funding programs, riparian buffers are being created on agricultural lands to address significant water quality problems. Society and landowners are demanding many other environmental and social services (e.g., wildlife habitat and income diversification) from this practice. Resource planners therefore need to design riparian buffer systems in the right places to provide multiple services. However, scientific guidance for this is lacking. We developed a geographic information system (GIS)-based assessment method for quickly identifying where buffers can be established to restore connectivity of riparian areas for the benefit of terrestrial wildlife. In the last decade, about 370,000 acres (150,000 ha) of economically marginal
farmland in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) have been restored to
bottomland hardwood forests (Stanturf and others 1998, King and Keeland 1999,
Schoenholtz and others 2001). Planting of this considerable acreage is due to several federal programs, such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), that assist landowners by financing afforestation (Figure 1). Unfortunately, these operational plantings have not performed as well as smaller plantings or research plots (Stanturf and others 2001a). While some argue that the Great Plains were dominated by grasslands and that riparian woodlands were rare, others contend that trees would logically have occurred in riparian areas due to favorable microenvironment conditions. Historically, what native plant communities were found in riparian zones of the Great Plains? The answers to this question depend to a large extent on what time period is used as a reference of pre-settlement conditions.

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (Farm Bill) has been hailed as the single most significant commitment toward conservation on private lands in the Nation's history. Landowners can benefit from a portfolio of voluntary services. The conservation provisions can assist farmers and ranchers in meeting environmental and production challenges on their land. This legislation modifies existing programs and creates some new programs. Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis spp. occidentalis) woodlands are rapidly replacing quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) stands throughout the northern Great Basin. Aspen stands provide important habitat for many wildlife species and contain a high diversity of understory shrubs and herbaceous species. We studies two juniper removal treatments to restore aspen woodlands in Kiger Canyon on Steens Mountain, Oregon.

Riparian buffers can improve surface water quality by filtering contaminants from runoff before they enter streams. Infiltration is an important process in riparian buffers. Computer models are often used to assess the performance of riparian buffers. Accurate prediction of infiltration by these models is dependent upon accurate estimates of infiltration parameters. Of particular interest here are Green-Ampt infiltration parameters, satiated hydraulic conductivity (K_o) and wetting front suction (h_f).
