Pb1607 Landowner's Guide To Timber Sale Contracts, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Pb1607 Landowner's Guide To Timber Sale Contracts, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Forestry, Trees, and Timber
A written timber sale agreement or contract is generally the preferable and safest method of selling timber. A written contract is a legally binding document that protects both the buyer and the seller (the landowner) from misunderstandings that may develop in the absence of such an agreement. A contract will verify the seller’s ownership of the timber to be sold and the absence of liens or other liabilities. There is little legal recourse with verbal agreements. By negotiating a contract, both parties are likely to work out difficulties before they occur and be more pleased with the transaction.

Third Year Effects Of Shelterwood Cutting, Wildlife Thinning, And Prescribed Burning On Oak Regeneration, Understory Vegetation Development, And Acorn Production In Tennessee, Daniel Stuart Gordon
Masters Theses
In 2000, a study was implemented at Chuck Swan State Forest and Wildlife Management Area to compare the effectiveness of prescribed burning, shelterwood cutting, wildlife thinning, and wildlife thinning with prescribed fire for improving wildlife habitat and enhancing oak regeneration. Treatments were implemented in four similar mixed hardwood stands with a northwest aspect.
In 2003, a follow-up study was conducted to:
1) document third-year effects of prescribed fire alone, wildlife thinning, wildlife thinning with prescribed fire, and shelterwood cutting on the density and size of oak regeneration and woody competitors,
2) quantify effects of prescribed fire alone, wildlife thinning, wildlife …

Printed Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) labels utilize conductive inks to provide the means for wireless flow of electronic signals. An RFID label is an identification label with an integrated circuit and antenna that transmits data via radio waves to a reader, which sends the data to a computer for processing. RFID labels allow manufacturers and retailers to accurately track their inventory more efficiently than previously possible with bar codes. However, etched metal RFID labels are too expensive for widespread implementation. The key to reducing the cost of RFID technology is replacing etched metal tags with tags printed with conducting ink. …
Competing For Legitimacy: The Development And Evolution Of Forest Certification In Finland, Keith Wellington Mars
Competing For Legitimacy: The Development And Evolution Of Forest Certification In Finland, Keith Wellington Mars
Masters Theses
Forest certification in Finland has developed and evolved in favor of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) and not the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The Finnish Forest Certification System (FFCS as endorsed by PEFC) certification of forests in Finland has been achieved at an unprecedented rate and scale. This event, both in process and outcome, was highly contentious and politicized. Finland represents a microcosm of the current issues in forest certification and is ripe for study. However, few attempts have been made to explain why and how forest certification develops and evolves. This thesis sheds light …

Bankfull Hydraulic Geometry Of Streams Draining The Southwestern Appalachians Of Tennessee, Gregory Scott Babbit
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the bankfull recurrence interval for streams draining the Southwestern Appalachians Level III Ecoregion 68 of Tennessee, develop bankfull discharge and hydraulic geometry relationships for streams within the ecoregion and compare those relationships to the Ridge and Valley of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Keaton et al., 2005) and the Piedmont and Blue Ridge of North Carolina (Harman et al., 1999; Harman et al., 2000). For this investigation, a repeatable, systematic process was developed to locate bankfull stage within the Southwestern Appalachians during the spring and summer of 2005. The intent was to …

Mp754: A Literature Review Of The Effects Of Intensive Forestry On Forest Structure And Plant Community Composition At The Stand And Landscape Levels, Erika L. Rowland, Alan S. White, William H. Livingston
Miscellaneous Publications
The effects of intensive forest management on forest structure and plant community composition are not well documented, particularly with respect to the forests in the Northeast. This review presents a six-part synthesis of the literature. The first section considers the effects of intensive forestry practices within the context of naturally regenerated stands. The second section reviews the changes associated with the planting of conifers in softwood sites, as well as those previously occupied by hardwood and mixed-wood stands. The third examines the impacts of intensive management specifically on bryophytes and lichens. The fourth section discusses changes in dead organic matter …
Sp663 Tree Planting Procedure For Small, Bare-Root Seedings, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Sp663 Tree Planting Procedure For Small, Bare-Root Seedings, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Forestry, Trees, and Timber
Tree seedlings receive foremost care while growing in a managed nursery: fertile soil; ample moisture; and weed, insect and disease control. Lifting seedlings out of this comfort zone shocks them. Consider: they are dislodged from the soil; their roots are often torn; they are handled several times; they are packaged, shipped, exposed to wind and heat, and placed in planting bags or machine buckets; their roots are unveiled to open air; and they are often replanted in harsh soil where they are left to high temperatures with the hope of adequate precipitation for sustenance through the first few growing seasons.

Despite the use of planting plans and engineering drawings, many landowners find it difficult to conceptualize what a future conservation practice or system will actually look like on their landscape. This lack of understanding can create challenging barriers in the planning process and is exacerbated by the long-term commitment that many conservation systems require from landowners. Landowners often lament if they could only see a picture of the proposed action on their property, then they could make a decision. Fortunately, natural resource professionals have a tool called visual simulations to help address this dilemma.

In 1998, we measured the effects of Hurricane Georges after it passed over long-term research sites in Puerto Rican dry forest. Our primary objectives were to quantify hurricane effects on forest structure, to compare effects in a large tract of forest versus a series of nearby forest fragments, to evaluate short-term response to hurricane disturbance in terms of mortality and sprouting, and to assess the ability of hurricanes to maintain forest structure. We sampled damage from 33 plots (1.3 ha) across a 3000-ha tract of forest as well as in 19 fragments. For stems with 2.5-cm minimum diameter, 1004 stems/ha …

Sp657 Impacts Of Air Pollution On The Urban Forest, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Sp657 Impacts Of Air Pollution On The Urban Forest, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Forestry, Trees, and Timber
An average human breathes around 3,400 gallons of air each day. Included in each breath can be numerous noxious chemicals as well as suspended particles. Consequently, human lungs must cope with this pollution. It is well known that air pollution is hazardous to human health and of enormous concern today. However, the “lungs” of our urban areas, trees growing in and around our cities, must also contend with air pollution. Just as air pollution impacts humans, air pollution affects trees in a variety of ways.
Pollution has long been identified as harmful to trees. Historically, impacts of air pollution were …

Analyses Of High Resolution Hyperspectral Imagery For Characterization Of Ponderosa Pine Woodlands, Cullen R. Robbins
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Bessey Unit of the Nebraska National Forest is a planted ponderosa pine forest located in the Nebraska Sand Hills. Planted in the early 20th Century, it provides a unique opportunity to study the effects of ponderosa pine establishment on the surrounding grassland ecosystem and the effects of increasing pine density on the forest ecosystem. It has been hypothesized that there are key levels of canopy cover at which shifts in ecosystem function occur. The goal of this research was to use remotely sensed data to develop a reliable method for estimating canopy cover. More specifically, canopy cover was estimated …
Street Trees In The Urban Forest Canopy: Portland, Oregon, Joseph Poracsky, David Banis
Street Trees In The Urban Forest Canopy: Portland, Oregon, Joseph Poracsky, David Banis
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Attempts to identify the contribution of street trees to the overall urban forest of a city have been rare and lack consensus on how to measure that contribution – percentage of trees, percentage of canopy cover, or percentage of leaf area. The actual numeric values presented in the literature also vary over a broad range and often are based on estimates, extrapolations from aggregated data, or simply stated with no empirical data referenced. This study was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of street trees to canopy in Portland, Oregon. The study involved both visual and digital analysis of multi-band aerial …
Use Of Borate In Semi-Chemical Pulping, Promodh K. Veguru
Use Of Borate In Semi-Chemical Pulping, Promodh K. Veguru
Masters Theses
The original Neutral Sulfite Semi-Chemical (NSSC) pulping process used sodium sulfite as the principle cooking chemical and had the disadvantage of sulfur emission problems. Considerable research was conducted to investigate the use of other chemicals including sodium hydroxide, but was not completely satisfactory. Several mills adapted a sodium carbonate based process but experienced slower pulping and reduced physical properties. The objective of this research is to study the use of borate as a pulping chemical in sodium carbonate semi-chemical pulping. The experimental plan included digester cooks; controls with pure sodium carbonate, and the other with partially borate autocausticized sodium carbonate. …
Evaluation Of Tennessee State Park Governance: Public Involvement, Agency Accountability And Conservation Implications, Mary Mallinson Long
Evaluation Of Tennessee State Park Governance: Public Involvement, Agency Accountability And Conservation Implications, Mary Mallinson Long
Masters Theses
A primary challenge for governance in our democracy is one of creating governing arrangements and structures that can pursue policies and other decisions that are effective (meet the public interest) and efficient. The history of Tennessee State Parks’ strategic direction and management is fraught with political interests guiding these decisions. This allows the political power to be concentrated in the executive and legislative arms of government and is subject to special interest economic and political influences. The civic/public sector has had little influence on these decisions. Given these conditions, the agency is particularly vulnerable to political battles between the executive …

Synthesis Of Design Guidelines And Experimental Data For Water Quality Function In Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Susan Buffler, Craig Johnson, John Nicholson, Nancy Mesner
USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications
Currently, there is no scientific literature examining appropriate riparian buffer widths for water quality for streams on private agriculturally dominated lands in arid regions of the Intermountain West. The initial step in this research effort was a review of buffer research as documented in the literature in other physiographic regions of the United States. Research findings on appropriate buffer widths for water quality parameters were synthesized using a matrix format. Differences between arid and non-arid landscape characteristics, soil, topography, vegetation, climate and hydrology and their effect on buffers for water quality were also researched. The combined research findings in this …
