Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
One hundred twenty barrows with an initial wt of 130 lb were utilized to determine the effects of dietary lysine level and porcine somatotropin (pST) injection on growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs fed to heavy market weights (280 lb). Pigs were injected daily in the extensor muscle of the neck with either 4 mg pST or a placebo and fed diets containing either .8, 1.0, 1.2, or 1.4% dietary lysine. Performance data were collected and evaluated for three weight ranges : 130 to 230 lb, 230 to 280 lb, and 130 to 280 lb. Two pigs from …

Effect Of Rumen Degradability Of Protein And Fat On The Growth And Development Of Dairy Calves (1990), D.E. Isbell, J.L. Morrill
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Sixty heifer and 34 bull calves were fed starter diets containing either control or extruded soybean meal (SBM) and either 2.5% or no bypass fat from birth to 8 wk of age. There were no interactions between the type of SBM and the amount of fat. There were no significant differences between the calves fed control or extruded SBM with or without fat supplementation, although the trends favored the calves fed extruded SBM with no bypass fat.; Dairy Day, 1990, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, 1990; The 1990 Annual KSU Dairy Day is known as Dairy Day, 1990

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
At Kansas State University, we are conducting research concerning nutrition and feeding management of calves, heifers, and dairy steers with emphasis in the following areas: 1) development of feeds and management practices to stimulate rumen development and allow earlier weaning, concomitant with satisfactory growth; 2) vitamin supplementation to improve performance of growing dairy animals, with emphasis on increasing efficiency of the immune system; 3) determination of nutrients needed by growing heifers to achieve desired rates of growth required to reach adequate size at freshening at 22 to 24 mo of age, without getting too fat; 4) study of feeding programs …

Effect Of Parturition And Recombination Bovine Somatotropin (Rbst) On The Metabolic Profile Of Dairy Cows (1990), J.M. Estrada, John E. Shirley
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Summary Blood samples were collected from 16 Holstein cows around parturition to obtain baseline values of various hormones and metabolites. At 90 ± 3 days postcalving, cows were divided into two groups (8 cows/group) and injected with either saline (control) or 25 mg rBST/d for 28 consecutive days. Blood was sampled on days 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, and 45 after the beginning of treatment and analyzed for insulin, glucagon, growth hormone, glucose, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Milk production and composition were recorded as well as body weights and condition scores. Cows receiving rBST had higher milk yields …

Ensayara Jumane, A New Species From Belize, Caribbean Sea (Amphipoda, Lysianassidae), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Ensayara jumane is described from Belize. It differs from the west Mexican Ensayara ramonella J. L. Barnard (1964) in the excavate posteroventral margins of article 2 on pereopods 5-7, and the sparse (9 versus 25) setae on articles 5-6 of gnathopod I. A new diagnosis for Ensayara, a key to species, list of species, references to original descriptions and geographic codes for each species are provided. This is the first record of the genus from the Caribbean Sea.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The new species Gitana dominica is described from Dominica in the Lesser Antilles; it is the first record of the genus from the western Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from its closest relative, Gitana calitemplado, from California, in the shorter and posteroventrally excavate coxa 1. Gitana is reviewed.
Methionine Metabolism In Fasciola Hepatica, Carol Theresa Ayer
Methionine Metabolism In Fasciola Hepatica, Carol Theresa Ayer
Dissertations and Theses
5'-Deoxy-5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) is derived from s-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) during the synthesis of the polyamines spermidine and spermine. Methionine can be regenerated from MTA by one of two mechanisms. In mammalian cells and some microorganisms, MTA is degraded to adenine and 5-methylthioribose-1-phosphate (MTR-1-P) via MTA phosphorylase. In certain other microbes, however, MTA is catabolized in two steps; first to adenine and 5-methylthioribose (MTR) via MTA nucleosidase followed by conversion of MTR to MTR-1-P via MTR kinase.
This study was to demonstrate the presence of MTA nucleosidase or MTA phosphorylase in both redia containing cercariae and adult Fasciola hepatica Linnaeus, 1758. If MTA …

Trial 90WH75
A. Ear:stem ratios in parental genotypes.
Earlier studies have established the importance of ear:stem ratio in determining the harvest index and potential yield of wheat cultivars (Siddique et al. 1989; Siddique and Whan, 1990). Much of the earlier work was concentrated mainly on recommended high yielding cultivars and some old cultivars. It is important to evaluate a wide range of parental materials for ear:stem ratios, before embarking on a breeding programme on ear:stem ratios. The main aim of this study was to assess ear:stem ratios in a wide range of parental genotypes.

Isoprenylation Is Required For The Processing Of The Lamin A Precursor, Michael Sinensky, L. A. Beck, T. J. Hosick
Michael Sinensky
The nuclear lamina proteins, prelamin A, lamin B, and a 70-kD lamina-associated protein, are posttranslationally modified by a metabolite derived from mevalonate. This modification can be inhibited by treatment with (3-R,S)-3-fluoromevalonate, demonstrating that it is isoprenoid in nature. We have examined the association between isoprenoid metabolism and processing of the lamin A precursor in human and hamster cells. Inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase by mevinolin (lovastatin) specifically depletes endogenous isoprenoid pools and inhibits the conversion of prelamin A to lamin A. Prelamin A processing is also blocked by mevalonate starvation of Mev-1, a CHO cell line auxotrophic for mevalonate. …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The National Subterranean Clover Improvement Programme (NSCIP) aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low—oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases: (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co—ordinated by the Plant Breeder.
The first phase is conducted at the University Field Station (UFS) and is continued until …

This is in contract to 375 ml most emergent which had good control of mustard (77%) and suppression of ryegrass. There was no yield advantage from the post emergent treatment but there was a 55% yield increase from …

Aspen Site Index As Related To Plant Indicators, D.K. Walters, J.P. Sloan, V. Kurmis
Aspen Bibliography
Eighty-five fully stocked, even-aged, aspen stands representing a wide range of ages were examined. Using published site index equations, the site index of these stands was estimated. A second available indicator of the site quality was the soil productivity group used by the Soil Survey. Each of these site quality indicators was related to synecological coordinates (moisture, nutrient, heat, light) of 85 stands. In this case, synecological coordinates were identified through the use of indicator plant species (synecological coordinates).
