A Report On Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Nebraska-- Their Biology, Behavior, Ecology, Management, And Responses To A Visual Barrier Fence, Nancy S. Foster

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I examined the effects of a visual barrier fence, which had a see-through visibility of 600/0, on the foraging, vigilance, and aggressive behaviors of adult female black-tailed prairie dogs from June through August 1990 in central Nebraska. I also examined changes in their home ranges and use of an area in response to this fence. Prairie dogs prefer an open view of their surroundings. Therefore, I expected animals near a visual barrier to spend more time in vigilance and aggression, and less time foraging. Adult female prairie dogs exposed to the visual barrier devoted more time to foraging and less …

Effects Of Errors In Pedigree On Three Methods Of Estimating Breeding Value For Litter Size, Backfat And Average Daily Gain In Swine, T. E. Long, R. K. Johnson, J. W. Keele Dec 1990

Effects Of Errors In Pedigree On Three Methods Of Estimating Breeding Value For Litter Size, Backfat And Average Daily Gain In Swine, T. E. Long, R. K. Johnson, J. W. Keele

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Estimated breeding value (EBV) was calculated based on either individual phenotype (SP), an index of individual phenotype and full- and half-sib family averages (SI) or Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Calculations were done with correct data or data with 5, 10, 15 or 20% of the records per generation containing pedigree errors. Traits considered were litter size (LS), backfat (BF) and average daily gain (ADG). When data were correct, BLUP resulted in an advantage in expected genetic gain over SP of 22, 7.2 or 30.8% for LS, BF and ADG, respectively, and over SI of 9.6, 3.8 or 21.4%. When …

Long Term Management Measures For The Cockburn Sound Restricted Entry Fisheries., P. Millington Dec 1990

Long Term Management Measures For The Cockburn Sound Restricted Entry Fisheries., P. Millington

Fisheries management papers

The objective of this management plan is to introduce rules which will ensure there is a real reduction in professional fishing units and fishing effort in the medium to long term. This reduction should enable a small professional fishery to co-exist with the recreational sector, supply fresh fish to the metropolitan area, ensuring there is no proliferation of "shamateur fishing" and providing a supply of recreational angling bait.

Lake Mead Nutrient Enhancement Project, Peter D. Vaux, Larry J. Paulson, Nevada Department Of Wildlife, National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration

Publications (WR)

The Lake Mead Fertilization Project is a research program designed to investigate the potential for using large-scale artificial fertilization to enhance the game fisheries of this reservoir through an increase in the population of threadfin shad, the system's primary forage species. A substantial decline in the population of largemouth bass, together with poor condition of adult striped bass, are the two major issues affecting the Lake Mead game fisheries. Both issues have been hypothesized to be a result of an inadequate amount of forage in the reservoir. Previous studies have in turn suggested that a major factor limiting the shad …

Habitat Requirements For The Softshell Clam, Mya Arenaria In The Chesapeake Bay, Patrick Baker, Roger L. Mann Dec 1990

Habitat Requirements For The Softshell Clam, Mya Arenaria In The Chesapeake Bay, Patrick Baker, Roger L. Mann

Reports

Large populations of softshell clams persist only in relatively shallow, sandy. mesohaline portions of Chesapeake Bay. These areas are mostly in Maryland, but can also occur in the Rappahannock River. Virginia. In some other portions of the bay, especially polyhaline portions. sparse populations of soft shell clams persist subtidally. Restricted populations exist intertidally.

Softshell clams grow rapidly in Chesapeake Bay, reaching commercial size in two years or less. They reproduce twice per year, in spring and fall, but probably only fall spawnings are important in maintaining population levels. Major recruitment events do not occur in most years. despite heavy annual …

1990 FALL FIELD DAYS

The registration for the1990 Fall Field Days, held 7 to 9 September at the 4-H Camp in the National Forest near Halsey, was 57. The weather was clear, in the 80's during the day, but cool nights, and even during the day the Lodge was pleasant because of the ventilation and the fans. Friday night there was a slide show, Saturday night Gerry Toll told about the Peregrine Falcon project in Omaha, with slides. Mrs. Green banded birds, as usual, showing interesting specimens to those who were near. On Saturday some took a canoe trip down …

Laughing Gull in Cedar County, Nebraska

Johnsgard's (1986) A Revised List of the Birds of Nebraska and Adjacent States considers the Laughing Gull (Larus atricilia) an extremely rare vagrant in Nebraska. Bray, Padelford, and Silcock (1986), in The Birds of Nebraska: a Critically Evaluated List, consider this species as accidental, with only one of 13 records accepted - the description of a specimen of one taken 2 April 1915 at Inland, Clay Co. This specimen was once in the Hastings Municipal Museum, but was sold and its current location is unknown.

Significant (?) Modifications In Bird Sightings At Wolff Lake (Fall 1979 To Spring 1990), Thomas A. Hoffman

Nebraska Bird Review

One of the problems of having a computer handy is that you begin to start organizing your notes. Recently I began to organize the notes I had taken since 1979 for the Nebraska Bird Review's semi- annual occurrence reports. Partly I wanted to verify my suspicions about variation in the occurrence of several species during that period of time. I try to visit the area called Wolff Lake (a sand-arid-gravel operation on the south side of the Platte River in northwestern Saunders Co. each weekend. But there are many variations, and there are periods of prolonged absences. I average about …

"Notes," From Nebraska Bird Review (December 1990)

Nebraska Bird Review

THE TABLES FOR THE 1990 SPRING OCCURRENCE REPORT were poorly printed, for unexplained reasons. The tables did not match across the "gutter"; it will help to draw a line from the first line on one page to the first line on the facing page, and then draw a line across for every third line. That way, the line for each species will either have a line across, or be just above or just below one. The headings for the left-hand pages after page 60 were omitted. The headings for pages 58 and 60 are correct for the rest of the …

Doctoral Dissertations

Mature ewes were equipped with catheters in the portal, hepatic, mesenteric and femoral veins and femoral artery. Blood flows were measured by infusing a 1.5% solution of para-aminohippurate into the mesenteric vein at .764 ml/min. Net fluxes of metabolites were calculated by multiplying veno-arterial differences by tissue blood flows.

Study 1. Twenty experiments were conducted on five ewes to determine the effects of fungus-infested fescue hay on energy nutrients and regulatory hormone net fluxes. Ten experiments were conducted for each a fungus-free and fungus-infested fescue hay diet. Fungus-infested hay decreased arterial concentrations of acetoacetate and B hydroxybutyrate by 15 and …

Mountain Plover Sighted In Kimball County, Mary Clausen Dec 1990

Mountain Plover Sighted In Kimball County, Mary Clausen

Nebraska Bird Review

In late April of 1990 I went to Kimball Co. to search for Mountain Plovers. Over a period of a week I walked several sections where Mountain Plovers have been sighted in the past. No Plovers were found at that time.

After I returned to my office in Lincoln, Fritz Knopf (Avian Studies Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Colorado) contacted me to discuss Mountain Plover nesting habitat and behavior. Fritz offered to make a quick drive around Kimball Co. to see how the habitat in Nebraska compared to that used by nesting Mountain Plovers in Colorado.

On 3 May …

Distribution Of The Fishes Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Damien J. Simbeck Dec 1990

Distribution Of The Fishes Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Damien J. Simbeck

Masters Theses

Over 200 collections of fishes have been made within the boundaries of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, revealing a Park ichthyofauna of 74 native and 5 introduced fish species. Abrams Creek, containing the most diverse ichthyofauna in the park, currently contains only 35 of its historical 67 fish species. This loss of species resulted from intentional poisoning of eh creek to improve habitat for rainbow trout and impoundment of the lowest 2.6 miles by Chilhowee Reservoir.

Abrams Creek also contains a very unusual ichthyofauna in its upper portion. Several species found above its 25-foot waterfall have not been found …

The Life History Of The Flame Chub, Hemitremia Flammea (Jordan And Gilbert), In Pond Creek, Loudon County, Tennessee, Marcia K. Sossamon

Masters Theses

Life history data were obtained from 243 preserved specimens of the flame chub, Hemitremia flammea, collected from June 1989 to June 1990 at Pond Creek in Loudon County, Tennessee. Flame chubs had a life expectancy of 1.5 years, and some individual reached 2 years. Length-weight relationships showed that as the length of the flame chubs increased, their weight did not increase as much as most other fish. During the spawning season, females averaged larger than males and outnumbered them. Flame chubs spawned between January and June, peaking in March. Fecundity generally increased as the total length of the female …

Alternative Methods Of Selection For Litter Size In Mice: I. Characterization Of Base Population And Development Of Methods, A. C. Clutter, Merlyn K. Nielsen, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Studies on a base population of mice were used to establish an index of components of litter size and a physiological model for measuring uterine capacity to be used subsequently in a selection experiment evaluating alternative methods for practicing selection to increase litter size. Heritability estimates of litter size, ovulation rate and ova success (fraction of ova resulting in fully formed pups) were .18, .33 and .15, respectively. No significant genetic or phenotypic correlation was found between overall ovulation rate and ova success. Phenotypic means and genetic variances were higher for characteristics measured on the right than on the left …

Degree Of Call Synchrony During Interactions Between Male Snowy Tree Crickets, James W. Popp Oct 1990

Degree Of Call Synchrony During Interactions Between Male Snowy Tree Crickets, James W. Popp

Field Station Bulletins

Call synchrony has been reported for the snowy tree cricket (Oecanthus fultoni), but the degree to which it occurs in natural interactions has not been previously investigated. I recorded acoustic interactions among ten pairs of male snowy tree crickets to determine the degree to which call synchrony occurs. High levels of call synchrony (percent of calls that temporally overlapped another call) were found in all pairs, but in only half of the pairs was synchrony greater than expected by chance. Males differed considerably in their tendency to temporally overlap the calls of their neighbors. There was minimal frequency overlap of …

Alien Plant Species In Eastern Wisconsin Natural Areas, Lawrence A. Leitner

Field Station Bulletins

An expanded study of non-native plant species in eastern Wisconsin Natural Areas resulted in a total of 64 exotics being found. The most abundant were Rhamnus cathartica, Taraxacum officinale, and Berberis thunbergii. Sites suffering the greatest degrees of invasion were the oak openings, while the more mesic areas appeared relatively resistant.

Development Of Vegetation In Wetlands Restored On Ozaukee County Conservation Reserve Program Lands, James A. Reinartz, Elizabeth L. Warne Oct 1990

Development Of Vegetation In Wetlands Restored On Ozaukee County Conservation Reserve Program Lands, James A. Reinartz, Elizabeth L. Warne

Field Station Bulletins

We studied the natural revegetation of six wetlands created in 1988 and six wetlands created in 1989 in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. By describing the flora and vegetation of these two sets of wetlands we could compare the development of plant communities in one- and two-year old wetlands. Of the 119 species found in the 12 wetlands, 64% were native, 62% were wetland plants, and 65% were perennials. More species were found in two-year old than in one-year old wetlands. There was also a strong correlation between wetland size and the number of species present during the first year after construction. …

On-Board Quality Control Preparing Mid-Atlantic Fisheries For The Future, Robert A. Fisher Oct 1990

On-Board Quality Control Preparing Mid-Atlantic Fisheries For The Future, Robert A. Fisher

Reports

The U.S. population is eating more seafood than at any time in the nation's history. Strong national and local marketing and consumer education programs have encouraged this increased consumption. AF, consumers become more knowledgeable about seafood products, and as sales respond to competition, high quality products will be the 1ule rather than the exception. This guide focuses on the very beginning of quality assurance, on-board handling.

Areas of focus for on-board quality control measures include vessel sanitation, icing-temperature control, harvesting techniques, on-deck handling, and storage. These procedures, outlined on the following pages, are in line with preliminary requirements being set …

1991 Beef Cattle Report, Darrell W. Nelson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A two-year study tested the hypothesis that growth rate interacts with bull exposure to influence age at puberty in heifers. Heifers exposed to sterile bulls and fed to achieve a high growth rate (1.8 lb/day) attained puberty 73 days earlier than heifers not exposed to bulls and fed to a moderate growth rate (1.3 lb/day). Heifers exposed to bulls and fed to achieve a moderate growth rate attained puberty at ages similar to heifers not exposed to bulls and fed to a high growth rate. Furthermore. heifers receiving these two treatments attained puberty 23 days earlier than heifers not exposed …

The Effects Of Two Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Benzo[A]Pyrene And Naphthalene On Reproductive Success Embryological Development Larval Physiology And Mortality Of The Mud Crab Rhithropanopeus Harisii (Gould), Gregory V. White

OES Theses and Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as naphthalene (Nap) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) are common in the water column and sediments of estuarine and coastal areas. The mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii was exposed to varying concentrations of Nap or B[a]P to determine the effects on reproductive success, embryological development, larval physiology and mortality. Nap and B[a]P decreased hatching success and prolonged embryological development. Both pollutants produced high abnormality frequencies for egg exposed larvae. Molt frequency and respiratory rates of larvae from non-exposed eggs were more chronically affected by these pollutants than were egg exposed larvae. The EC50 concentrations were determined for …
