Pseudo-Stereo Audio Processor, Zachariah David Bunce Jun 2019

Pseudo-Stereo Audio Processor, Zachariah David Bunce

Electrical Engineering

Due to both technical and resource limitations, non-professional audio production must often record with a single microphone, creating a mono audio signal. Even some originally multi-channel audio files often combine the separate channels into a single channel to save memory. However, this channel limitation makes any music held within the audio duller during listening. The Pseudo-Stereo Audio Processor remedies this situation, introducing a quadrature phase shift onto a given single-channel audio signal, producing multiple phase shifted output signals. These separate fixed-phase output signals are then recombined to produce a variable phase difference, emulated two-channel version of the input signal, allowing …

Portable Electrocardiogram Device And Signal Processing Design, Ryan F. Blaalid Jun 2019

Portable Electrocardiogram Device And Signal Processing Design, Ryan F. Blaalid

Electrical Engineering

Full 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements require inconvenient and time consuming adhesive electrode placement. This project proposes a design for a Bluetooth based ECG for remote patient measurement. The device is designed to measure up to 6-leads and utilizes 5 dry (non-adhesive) electrodes to accomplish this. The device delivers the ECG data to the user’s mobile smart phone and can then be sent to the patient’s doctor for analysis. Since the contact of the dry electrodes to the skin is not perfect, low-frequency noise called baseline wandering is introduced. A signal processing technique borrowed from image processing called morphological filtering is …

Eeg Classification Using Residual Neural Networks, Eren Esener Jun 2019

Eeg Classification Using Residual Neural Networks, Eren Esener

Electrical Engineering

There is a growing desire to understand the EEG (electroencephalogram) signals related with brain activities. In order to analyze EEG signals, they first must be measured by sensors, which induces a lot of noise; then these signals are classified to understand the intended actions. In many cases a neural network is used as the algorithms for classification. A residual neural network (ResNet) is an artificial neural network (ANN) of a kind that are related with the pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex. The goal of this work is to investigate the viability of ResNets for classifying EEG signals for hand …

Virtual Eye: A Spatial-Temporal Bottom-Up Eye Sensitivity Model, Todd Goodall May 2019

Virtual Eye: A Spatial-Temporal Bottom-Up Eye Sensitivity Model, Todd Goodall

MODVIS Workshop

Video quality and compression models use the

spatial contrast sensitivity function (CSF), which is solved

based on a linear system approximation. This function measures

the eye’s sensitivity to sinusoid gratings, ignoring the subtle

connectivity and inhomogeniety of cell density across the

visual field. Non-linear aspects of the eye, such as the change

in frequency sensitivity with changing illumination, are not

captured by this simple approximation. We propose Virtual

Eye, a bottom-up approach that models the spatio-temporal

dynamics of the eye across the visual field. Each functional

retinal cell layer in the eye is modeled using non-uniform spatial

cell responses, which …

A Model-Based Framework For The Smart Manufacturing Of Polymers, Santiago D. Salas Ortiz May 2019

A Model-Based Framework For The Smart Manufacturing Of Polymers, Santiago D. Salas Ortiz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is hard to point a daily activity in which polymeric materials or plastics are not involved. The synthesis of polymers occurs by reacting small molecules together to form, under certain conditions, long molecules. In polymer synthesis, it is mandatory to assure uniformity between batches, high-quality of end-products, efficiency, minimum environmental impact, and safety. It remains as a major challenge the establishment of operational conditions capable of achieving all objectives together. In this dissertation, different model-centric strategies are combined, assessed, and tested for two polymerization systems.

The first system is the synthesis of polyacrylamide in aqueous solution using potassium persulfate …

An Unsupervised Channel Selection Method For Ssvep-Based Brain Computer Interfaces, Ethan Webster, Hadi Habibzadeh, Tolga Soyata May 2019

An Unsupervised Channel Selection Method For Ssvep-Based Brain Computer Interfaces, Ethan Webster, Hadi Habibzadeh, Tolga Soyata

CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide an alternative communication channel for people with motor deficits that prevent normal communication. The underlying premise of a BCI is that a neuroimaging process such as electroencephalography (EEG) can be used to measure the user’s brain activity as signals. The obtained signals are analyzed to determine the user’s intended actions and a computer system can be used to replace voluntary muscle activity as a means of communication. The information transfer rate (ITR) of an algorithm used for determining the user’s intentions greatly affects the perceived practicality of the BCI system. Such algorithms are divided into two …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In both supervised and unsupervised learning settings, deep neural networks (DNNs) are known to perform hierarchical and discriminative representation of data. They are capable of automatically extracting excellent hierarchy of features from raw data without the need for manual feature engineering. Over the past few years, the general trend has been that DNNs have grown deeper and larger, amounting to huge number of final parameters and highly nonlinear cascade of features, thus improving the flexibility and accuracy of resulting models. In order to account for the scale, diversity and the difficulty of data DNNs learn from, the architectural complexity and …

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Waveform Effects On Passive Bistatic Radar, Forrest D. Taylor Mar 2019

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Waveform Effects On Passive Bistatic Radar, Forrest D. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Communication waveforms act as signals of opportunity for passive radars. However, these signals of opportunity suffer from range-Doppler processing losses due to their high range sidelobes and pulse-diverse waveform aspects. Signals such as the long term evolution (LTE) encode information within the phase and amplitude of the waveform. This research explores aspects of the LTE, such as the encoding scheme and bandwidth modes on passive bistatic Doppler radar. Signal space-time adaptive processing (STAP) performance is evaluated and parameters are compared with the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) metric.

Deep-Turbulence Wavefront Sensing Using Digital Holography In The On-Axis Phase Shifting Recording Geometry With Comparisons To The Self-Referencing Interferometer, Douglas E. Thornton, Mark F. Spencer, Glen P. Perram Feb 2019

Deep-Turbulence Wavefront Sensing Using Digital Holography In The On-Axis Phase Shifting Recording Geometry With Comparisons To The Self-Referencing Interferometer, Douglas E. Thornton, Mark F. Spencer, Glen P. Perram

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the use of digital holography in the on-axis phase-shifting recording geometry for the purposes of deep-turbulence wavefront sensing. In particular, we develop closed-form expressions for the field-estimated Strehl ratio and signal-to-noise ratio for three separate phase-shifting strategies—the four-, three-, and two-step methods. These closed-form expressions compare favorably with our detailed wave-optics simulations, which propagate a point-source beacon through deep-turbulence conditions, model digital holography with noise, and calculate the Monte Carlo averages associated with increasing turbulence strengths and decreasing focal-plane array sampling. Overall, the results show the four-step method is the most efficient phase-shifting strategy and …

Improving Regional And Teleseismic Detection For Single-Trace Waveforms Using A Deep Temporal Convolutional Neural Network Trained With An Array-Beam Catalog, Joshua T. Dickey, Brett J. Borghetti, William Junek

Faculty Publications

The detection of seismic events at regional and teleseismic distances is critical to Nuclear Treaty Monitoring. Traditionally, detecting regional and teleseismic events has required the use of an expensive multi-instrument seismic array; however in this work, we present DeepPick, a novel seismic detection algorithm capable of array-like detection performance from a single-trace. We achieve this performance through three novel steps: First, a high-fidelity dataset is constructed by pairing array-beam catalog arrival-times with single-trace waveforms from the reference instrument of the array. Second, an idealized characteristic function is created, with exponential peaks aligned to the cataloged arrival times. Third, a deep …

Fall Detection Using Channel State Information From Wifi Devices, D.M Sameera Palipana Jan 2019

Fall Detection Using Channel State Information From Wifi Devices, D.M Sameera Palipana

PhDs

Falls among the independently living elderly population are a major public health worry, leading to injuries, loss of confidence to live independently and even to death. Each year, one in three people aged 65 and older falls and one in five of them suffers fatal or non fatal injuries. Therefore, detecting a fall early and alerting caregivers can potentially save lives and increase the standard of living. Existing solutions, e.g. push-button, wearables, cameras, radar, pressure and vibration sensors, have limited public adoption either due to the requirement for wearing the device at all times or installing specialized and expensive infrastructure. …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Influenced by environmental conditions, underwater acoustic (UWA) communication channels exhibit spatial and temporal variations, posing significant challenges for UWA networking and applications. This dissertation develops statistical signal processing approaches to model and predict variations of the channel and relevant environmental factors. Firstly, extensive field experiments are conducted in the Great Lakes region. Three types of the freshwater river/lake acoustic channels are characterized in the aspects of statistical channel variations and sound propagation loss, including stationary, mobile and under-ice acoustic channels. Statistical data analysis shows that relative to oceanic channels, freshwater river/lake channels have larger temporal coherence, higher correlation among densely …

The tables are expected to be unique as they provide the best coverage yet known to the authors and research workers and they are the first step in a real-world passive attack against GSM. An initial investigation and analysis into the air interface of GSM were performed, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. These …

Sensor Placement For Damage Localization In Sensor Networks, Fereshteh Firouzi Jan 2019

Sensor Placement For Damage Localization In Sensor Networks, Fereshteh Firouzi

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to formulate and solve the sensor placement problem for damage localization in a sensor network. A Bayesian estimation problem is formulated with the time-of-flight (ToF) measurements. In this model, ToF of lamb waves, which are generated and received by piezoelectric sensors, is the total time for each wave to be transmitted, reflected by the target, and received by the sensor. The ToF of the scattered lamb wave has characteristic information about the target location. By using the measurement model and prior information, the target location is estimated in a centralized sensor network with a …

Effect Of Sensor Errors On Autonomous Steering Control And Application Of Sensor Fusion For Robust Navigation, Shuvodeep Bhattacharjya Jan 2019

Effect Of Sensor Errors On Autonomous Steering Control And Application Of Sensor Fusion For Robust Navigation, Shuvodeep Bhattacharjya

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Autonomous steering control is one the most important features in autonomous vehicle navigation. The nature and tuning of the controller decides how well the vehicle follows a defined trajectory. A poorly tuned controller can cause the vehicle to oversteer or understeer at turns leading to deviation from a defined path. However, controller performance also depends on the state–feedback system. If the states used for controller input are noisy or has bias / systematic error, the navigation performance of the vehicle is affected irrespective of the control law and controller tuning. In this report, autonomous steering controller analysis is done for …
