A method of classifying terrain, terrain activity and materials through panchromatic imagery a module programmed to provide such classification and aerospace vehicles comprising such module is provided. Panchromatic images of known materials terrains and terrain activities are taken and processed to form a multiband texture cube, that due it amount of data, is stored as a computer data base. New panchromatic images of unclassified materials, terrains and/or terrain activities are processed and compared via computer with such database that allows for inexpensive, quick and efficient classification of such new images.

A method and apparatus that measure M coupled channels of radar polarization data (ỹ), that is a subset, which is less than the full set of received coupled channels. Sparse recovery operations are performed on the measured M coupled channels of radar polarization data (ỹ) and a representation of a set of more than M channels of radar polarization data is generated from the sparse recovery performed on the subset of coupled channels.

A method for enhancing GPS location accuracy includes providing a base station receiver having a known surveyed location, and a roving receiver at a location distinct from the base station receiver. The method further includes receiving single-frequency code and carrier-phase measurements from the base station, and translating the single-frequency code and carrier-phase measurements to a Kalman filter-predicted location of the roving receiver. The translated single frequency code and carrier phase measurements are used to generate a local replica of the Kalman filter-predicted location signals for each channel of the roving receiver. A new apparatus and method for tracking a moving object with a moving camera provides a real-time, narrow field-of-view, high resolution and on target image by combining commanded motion with an optical flow algorithm for deriving motion and classifying background. Commanded motion means that movement of the pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) unit is “commanded” by a computer, instead of being observed by the camera, so that the pan, tilt and zoom parameters are known, as opposed to having to be determined, significantly reducing the computational requirements for tracking a moving object. A method and apparatus is provided for intra-PIT signal decomposition of a signal received with RF front end hardware. The method begins by aligning a signal received by RF front end hardware into integer multiples of a duration of a pseudorandom noise code sequence. A search grid is computed based on an integer multiple of the aligned signal. A plurality of initial ray parameters associated with the computed search grid is coarsely estimated. A digitally controlled optical delay apparatus providing optical signal delays electrically selectable in the picosecond to nanosecond range by way of selectable signal path lengths. Path lengths are incremented in physical length and path delay time according to digital ratios. The delay element includes micro-miniature path changing mirrors controlled in path length selecting positioning by input signals of logic level magnitude. Fiber optic coupling of signals to and from the delay element and a combination of fixed position and movable mirror included optical signal path lengths are included.

A method for equalizing data and systems utilizing the method. The method of this invention for equalizing (by shortening the channel response) data includes minimizing a function of the data and a number of equalizer characteristic parameters, where the function utilizes cyclic differences of equalized data. The present invention provides a method for generating a timing offset signal applied to a sampling device for recovering a symbol stream from a broadcast signal by characterizing the dispersion of received signal. Preferably, the method includes steps for generating a derivative signal approximating the derivative of the symbol stream, producing a constant representative of an expected symbol stream, and multiplying the derivative signal, the constant, and a signal one of corresponding to and approximating the symbol stream to thereby generate the timing offset signal. A dispersion characterizing receiver and a digital signal processor employed therein are also described.

An apparatus and method is disclosed for using adaptive algorithms to exploit sparsity in target weight vectors in an adaptive channel equalizer. An adaptive algorithm comprises a selected value of a prior and a selected value of a cost function. The present invention comprises algorithms adapted for calculating adaptive equalizer coefficients for sparse transmission channels. The present invention provides sparse algorithms in the form of a Sparse Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm and a Sparse Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) and a Sparse Decision Directed (DD) algorithm.
