Fatigue: Investigation Of A Human Factor For Regional Airline Pilots, Doug Mikkelsen
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This study analyzed the causes of regional airline pilot fatigue and the impact on pilot performance. An instrument was developed and refined through a field study validation by a panel of experts. The final instrument was distributed to three groups of regional airline pilots. The data supported the literature review, which revealed many causes of pilot fatigue, including flight crew schedules that are not compatible with human limitations; Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) that have not evolved with the advancement of aircraft performance and the public demand for 24 hour availability of flights; and poor personal habits. This is the third in a continuing IBPP series of articles about aviation terrorism. (See IBPP Vol. 1, Nos. 12 and 15 for the first two articles.) It was presented at the international conference entitled "Aviation Communication: A Multi-Cultural Forum" on April 9, 1997 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Arizona. This article illustrates how five commonly accepted elements of aviation antiterrorism and counterterrorism policy usually perpetuate terrorism as opposed to attenuating it.

Improving Operational Readiness Of Airport Emergency Response Crews: Utilization Of Gaming Theory In Decision Making Simulations, William E. Vines Jr.
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of simulation gaming technique on the decision-making skills of airport emergency response technicians. Through the use of descriptive research methods this study has examined the benefits of using simulation training to enhance operational readiness. A specialized questionnaire was developed using a Likert scale format to attain the opinion of 20 airport directors--or their representatives. Findings did support the research hypothesis that the introduction of simulation training (Table Top) exercises would increase the operational readiness of airport emergency response crews.
