Comparison Data Between Hybrid And Galvanic Anode Installation In The Arousa Island Bridge, José Antonio Becerra Mosquera, Diego Carro López, José Enrique Pardo Landrove, José Manuel Millán Pérez
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The Arousa Island Bridge, with its 1980 m is the only road access to the Arousa Island. Built in 1985, this single-cell box girder divided in 40 spans runs entirely on the sea. The deck is between 2 to 12 m above sea level, so after 25 years in a marine environment, the structure showed reinforcement corrosion, especially in piles and deck bottom. Attending to the corrosion damages, caused simply from a chloride attack, the local government decided to intervene with an ambitious repair project. This decision has been taken only after an exhaustive cost analysis to determine the feasibility …

Effect Of Time-Dependent Chloride Profile And Temperature Variation On Chloride Diffusion In Concrete, Feras Alsheet, A. Ghani Razaqpur
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Reinforcement corrosion due to chlorides diffusion is one of the main problems in reinforced concrete structures exposed to certain environments. The diffusion rate is function of chloride surface concentration, concrete temperature, humidity, composition and microstructure. The intruded chlorides are partially chemically bound by the concrete and it is the unbound or free chloride which upon exceeding a defined threshold initiates corrosion. The time to corrosion initiation depends on the above variables; therefore, it is important to model their spatial and temporal variations in a manner that will yield a realistic estimate of the actual initiation period. In this study, the …

Durability Design Of Segmental Linings For Intended Service Life Of Tunnels, Mehdi Bakhshi, Verya Nasri
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
In one-pass lining systems, the durability of tunnel structure is directly related to durability of concrete segments acting as both the initial support and the tunnel final lining. In this paper, most-frequent degradation mechanisms of concrete linings are discussed including chloride- and carbonation- induced corrosions, sulfate, acid and freeze-and-thaw attacks, and alkali-aggregate reactions. Mitigation method for each specific degradation mechanism is explained. A durability factor specific to railway and subway tunnel known as stray current corrosion is presented. Mitigation methods for this specific corrosion together with coupling effects with other conventional damage mechanisms are explained. Prescriptive approaches for durability design …
Load-Bearing Capacity Of Corroded Reinforced Concrete Structures Caused By Carbonation And Exposed To Xc4, Esko Sistonen
Load-Bearing Capacity Of Corroded Reinforced Concrete Structures Caused By Carbonation And Exposed To Xc4, Esko Sistonen
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Concrete corrosion can be visualized as a combination of chemical reaction on concrete and electrochemical reaction on steel reinforcement. Failure of steel reinforcement due to corrosion can inflict significant stress on concrete during load distribution. As such, it is necessary to analyse the long-term effects of corrosion on the load bearing capacity and bending strength of steel reinforcement. This research investigated the mechanical and electrochemical properties of concrete exposed to long-term corrosion for a period of 16 years. Non-destructive testing like crack width measurements, visual examination, electrochemical measurements using Galva Pulse and determination of average chloride content were undertaken to …

The use of seawater for mixing concrete for reinforced concrete structures is prohibited, since it can promote steel corrosion. However, the use of seawater would contribute to decrease the environmental impact of concrete, in particular in those regions of the world where potable water is a precious resource. The project SEACON-INFRAVATION between University of Miami and Politecnico di Milano, with various industrial partners, aims at investigating the use of seawater for the construction of sustainable and durable reinforced concrete structures and infrastructures. Within the project, that included a vast campaign of laboratory tests, also two demo projects – one in …

Remaining Service Life Estimation And Probabilistic Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Sewer Pipeline Systems, Pardis Moamaei
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The serviceability and structural performance of reinforced concrete pipes could deteriorate for many reasons. The loss in structural capacity and other structural operations may drastically affect the surrounding environment, public health and the economy. This research is directed towards the estimation of remaining service life, and to evaluate the level of risk of failure of reinforced concrete sewer pipes (RCSP) that are subjected to continuing corrosion due to sulfide attack that in turn leads to loss of pipe thickness caused by excessive deterioration along the pipe’s interior wall. In order to estimate the remaining service life, reliability theory is used …

The electrochemical behavior and susceptibility to pitting corrosion of CrFeCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloys were studied in a 0.1 M NaCl solution at temperatures ranging from 25 to 75 °C. Electrochemical measurements revealed that CrMnFeCoNi is more susceptible to oxide film breakdown and localized corrosion compared to CrFeCoNi. Post corrosion microscopic observations showed severe pitting corrosion for CrMnFeCoNi in higher temperatures compared to CrFeCoNi. Based on in-depth XPS profile measurements on the remaining oxide films, this behavior was attributed to the depletion of Cr in the oxide film and detrimental presence of Mn in the matrix solid solution of …

A Study And Simulation Of Flux Induced Corrosion In Copper Tubing Used For The Distribution Of Potable Water, Daniel O. Benham
Materials Engineering
Water side corrosion within copper plumbing can occur due to a wide variety of unwanted circumstances. Through the controlled immersion of six ¾” copper tubing samples with five utilizing a unique industry standard soldering flux, this investigation associates residual flux deposits with the initiation of pitting in copper. Water stagnation in a copper potable water distribution system, typically associated with an infrequently used faucet, is a condition highly prone to copper pitting. A test apparatus designed to produce a partially stagnant flow condition with scheduled electrolyte flushes every 3 days was developed and constructed to contain 6 test samples for …

The Influence Of Heat Treatment On Corrosion Behavior Of Martensitic Stainless Steel Uns 42670, Armen Kvryan
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Ceaseless demand for lighter, faster, and more efficient aircraft has been one of the greatest driving forces behind bearing steel innovations. Recent studies demonstrate that corrosion is one of the leading causes of bearing failure in both military and commercial aircraft. High-performing bearing steels are available but are not being used in US military applications due to high cost and security issues when steels are produced outside of the continental United States. One approach to address this issue is to engineer steels that are cost-efficient and heat treated for corrosion resistance, long wear life, etc.

Limit Equilibrium Method-Based Shear Strength Prediction For Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beam With Inclined Bars, Yafei Ma, Baoyong Lu, Zhongzhao Guo, Lei Wang, Hailong Chen, Jianren Zhang
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Shear strength is a widely investigated parameter for reinforced concrete structures. The corrosion of reinforcement results in shear strength reduction. Corrosion has become one of the main deterioration factors in reinforced concrete beam. This paper proposes a shear strength model for beams with inclined bars based on a limit equilibrium method. The proposed model can be applied to both corroded and uncorroded reinforced concrete beams. Besides the tensile strength of longitudinal steel bars, the shear capacity provided by the concrete on the top of the diagonal crack, the tensile force of the shear steel at the diagonal crack, the degradation …

Historically, high carbon steels have been used in mechanical applications because their high surface hardness contributes to excellent wear performance. However, in aggressive environments, current bearing steels exhibit insufficient corrosion resistance. Martensitic stainless steels are attractive for bearing applications due to their high corrosion resistance and ability to be surface hardened via carburizing heat treatments. Here three different carburizing heat treatments were applied to UNS S42670: a high-temperature temper (HTT), a low-temperature temper (LTT), and carbo-nitriding (CN). Magnetic force microscopy showed differences in magnetic domains between the matrix and carbides, while scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) revealed a 90–200 …

Flexural Behaviour Of Superelastic Shape Memory Alloy Reinforced Concrete Beams During Loading And Unloading Stages, Yamen Ibrahim Elbahy, Maged Youssef
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Trend of using smart structures, which can adjust when exposed to severe unexpected loading, is increasing. One of the methods to achieve such structures relies on smart materials. For example, replacing conventional steel reinforcing bars in Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures with superelastic Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) bars significantly reduces the residual deformations caused by post-yielding behaviour. This paper provides in-depth understanding of the flexural behaviour of SMA RC beams. A sectional analysis method, which predicts the flexural behaviour of SMA RC beams during both loading and unloading stages, is adopted and validated using available experimental data. An extensive parametric study …

Ductile Corrosion-Free Self-Centering Concrete Elements, Maged Youssef, Mohamed E. Meshaly, Ahmed Elansary
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Corrosion is a major factor in the deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. To mitigate this problem, steel bars can be replaced with glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) bars. However, the lack of ductility of GFRP-RC elements has prevented their use in many structural applications, especially in seismic areas. Superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars have been proposed to be used in seismic areas because of their self-centering characteristics. Also, they have the added advantage of being corrosion resistant. This paper examines the combined use of SMA and GFRP bars to achieve ductile self-centering and corrosion-free elements. The first challenge for such a …
Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion
Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion
Masters Theses
"We live in the world of "aging infrastructures". In this environment, critical and heavily utilized infrastructure, i.e. ships, planes, bridges, etc., are operating at or beyond their designed age. Replacement is no longer an option and "retirement for cause" is the current approach to maintenance and replacement. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing demand for efficient and robust nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods that can determine the physical health of these structures. Large structures, which are primarily made of metals, either steel or aluminum, are susceptible to high-stress cracking and corrosion. Stress-induced cracks in heavily corroded steel, used in bridges, railroads, storage …

Development Of Cardanol-Based Epoxy Coating, Nicholas Pottschmidt
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this project was to determine the suitability of cardanol glycidyl ether (CGE) as a substitute for trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPGE) as the reactive diluent in epoxy coatings. CGE may be a naturally-derived alternative to TMPGE, which is a commonly-used petroleum-derived reactive diluent. Epoxy coatings were formulated with CGE replacing increasing amounts of TMPGE in the formulation. Corrosion protection provided by the coatings was evaluated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Mechanical properties of the coatings (hardness, flexibility, adhesion, and impact resistance) were evaluated with applicable ASTM standards.
EIS results revealed the coating formulated with only CGE had superior …

Controlled Release Of Corrosion Inhibitors: Zinc And Magnesium Containing Sodium Chromate, Andrew Thomas
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Corrosion can be combated by multiple methods, where the primary purpose is to minimize degradation of metal surfaces. Corrosion inhibitors are one of the most effective methods of corrosion protection. Inhibitors are substances that minimize corrosion in aggressive environments, with only a low concentration required. The inhibitors are chemically adsorbed on the surface of the metal and a protective thin film is formed . The mechanism of the inhibitors could be described as anodic, cathodic, or a mix of the two. Anodic inhibitors, also known as passivation inhibitors, alter an anode reaction. Corrosion potential of the metal is shifted to …
Cataloging The Degree Of Sensitization Via Electrochemical Reactivation For Studying The Corrosion Behavior Of Inconel 718, Austenitic, And Duplex Stainless Steels, Bradley Lynes
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Corrosion resistant materials can be expensive, but usually reduce the life cycle cost of metallic assets. However, negligent sensitization of these materials can lead to aggressive, intergranular corrosion. Using the methodology of the double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL-EPR), this project investigates different steel reinforced bars and Inconel to determine the degree of sensitization after a heat treatment of 900°C for 2 hours. The purpose of this research is to validate and determine the appropriate test parameters for performing further DL-EPR test in the future. Additionally, the kinetics observed for each sample during the DL-EPR test will be analyzed and …
Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Stainless-Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nathan Frye
Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Stainless-Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nathan Frye
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Stainless steel rebar is one of the most corrosion resistant reinforcing methods for concrete structures. Stainless steel is used for its chromium content and its ability to form a passive oxide corrosion resistant layer. The presence of chloride is one of the largest attackers of this passive film and able to penetrate concrete due to its porous characteristics. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of different stainless steels relative to their changing environments. It is expected that as chloride concentration values increase, mechanical properties will decrease. This will be tested by performing tensile tests on stainless steel rebar sample that …

Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) is used in corrosion studies to quantify the relative nobility of different microstructural features present within complex metallic systems and thereby elucidate possible corrosion initiation sites. However, Volta potential differences (VPDs) measured via SKPFM in the literature for metal alloys exhibit large variability, making interpretation and application for corrosion studies difficult. We have developed an improved method for referencing SKPFM VPDs by quantifying the closely related work function of the probe relative to an inert gold standard whose modified work function is calculated via density functional theory (DFT). By measuring and tracking changes in …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Particle size is a critical consideration for many powder coating-related industries since it significantly influences the properties of the produced materials. However, the effect of particle size on the characteristics of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings is not well understood. This work investigates the microstructures, hardness and electrochemical corrosion behavior of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings synthesized using different-sized powders. All coatings mainly consist of Ni, N3B, CrB, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2 phases. The coatings produced by small particles (50–75 μm) exhibit lower porosity (2.0 ± 0.8%). Such coatings show a higher fraction (15.5 vol.%) of the amorphous phase and lower hardness (700 …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The growth of oxide film, which results from the inward oxygen diffusion from a corrosive environment, is a critical consideration for the corrosion resistance of zirconium alloys. This work calculates the oxygen diffusion coefficients in the oxide films formed on zirconium alloys annealed at 400~500 °C and investigates the related corrosion behavior. The annealed samples have a close size for the second-phase particles but a distinctive hardness, indicating the difference in substrate conditions. The weight gain of all samples highly follows parabolic laws. The weight gain of the sample annealed at 400 °C has the fastest increase rate at the …
