Sensitivity Of Half-Cell Potential Measurements To Properties Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Thad Marshall Pinkerton Dec 2007

Sensitivity Of Half-Cell Potential Measurements To Properties Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Thad Marshall Pinkerton

Theses and Dissertations

Half-cell potential testing has been recommended as a non-destructive method for assessing the corrosion potential of reinforcing steel in concrete bridge decks. The technique is particularly useful because it can be utilized to evaluate the probability of corrosion before damage is evident at the surface of a bridge deck. The specific objective of this research was to quantify the effects of age, chloride concentration, concrete cover thickness, spatial position, temperature, and presence or condition of epoxy coating on half-cell potential measurements of concrete bridge decks typical of those in Utah. The laboratory testing associated with this research followed a full-factorial …

Study On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Of Carbon Steel Eroded In Methyldiethanolamine Solution, Dong-Ping Wei, Rong-Zong Hu, Dan-Mei Pan, Wei-Xiong Huang, Rui Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

Corrosion behavior of carbon steel in methyldiethanolamine(MDEA) solution was investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS).The results were showed that the corrosion rate of carbon steel in solution containing dissolved oxygen is higher than that in solution removed of dissolved oxygen before cathodic activation. They were reversed after cathodic activation. The corrosion rate is increased at first and then decreased when the concentration of MDEA is increased in the blank solutions. In the simulated solutions containing quantities of!heat-stable salts(HSS),the corrosion rate is decreased monotonously with increase of the MDEA concentration. As anodic polarization potential is increased, the EIS of carbon steel in HSS simulated solution showed characteristics …

Application Of Millimeter Wave, Eddy Current And Thermographic Methods For Detection Of Corrosion In Aluminum Substrate, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Adam C. Ryley, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, Gary Steffes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aluminum structures exposed to the elements are susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion may cause various mechanical and structural deficiencies such as material thinning. It is desirable to rapidly detect and evaluate the properties of an aluminum substrate early in the corrosion process to avoid costly maintenance actions later. There are several nondestructive testing methods for this purpose. To investigate capabilities of millimeter wave, conventional eddy current, and flash thermography techniques for detection of large corrosion areas in aluminum substrates, two corroded samples were inspected with and without dielectric coating (appliqué). This paper presents the results of the c-scan imaging of these …

Corrosion Electrochemical Behavior Of Aluminum Flake Pigmented Water-Borne Epoxy Coating On Carbon Steel In Nacl Solution, Li-Li Xue, Li-Kun Xu, Qing-Fen Li, Hong-Qing Song, Wen-Juan Zhou, Guang-Zhang Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion electrochemical behavior of a water-borne epoxy coating pigmented with aluminum flake on carbon steel with artificial scratch defect was studied in 3.5% NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET).The results indicated that the defect presented anodic electroactivity at the initial stage of immersion, which extended gradually with time from the scratch into the neighboring coating, lowering the coating impedance. With further immersion, however, the electroactivity of the coating/steel interface decreased significantly due to the self-repairing of the corrosion products, causing an obvious increase of the coating impedance. In the later period of immersion, more scattered electroactive areas appeared under the coating because of …

Using Electrochemical Monitoring To Predict Metal Release In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Rajendra D. Vaidya Jan 2007

Using Electrochemical Monitoring To Predict Metal Release In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Rajendra D. Vaidya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corrosion of distribution system piping and home plumbing materials is a major concern in the water community. Iron release adverse affects aesthetic water quality and the release of copper and lead is regulated by the Lead and Copper rule (LCR) and can adversely affect consumer health. Corrosion control is typically done by pH regulation and/or addition of corrosion inhibitors. Monitoring of corrosion control is typically done after the fact by monitoring metal release, functional group concentration of the selected chemical species or water quality. Hence, the associated laboratory analyses create a significant delay prior to the assessment of corrosion in …

The Structural Reliability Of Bridges Subject To Time-Dependent Deterioration, Colin C. Caprani, C. Mcnally, E. J. O'Brien, A. Bordallo-Ruiz

Conference papers

The reliability of the structural performance of any given structure is affected by both in-service loading and material deterioration due to environmental attack. They must be evaluated at any given time in order to compute lifetime probability of failure. This paper presents an innovative methodology to derive the structure lifetime load effect due to existing traffic using a statistical tool known as Predictive Likelihood. Loss of resistance due to corrosion originated by chloride ingression is also taken into account. Finally the lifetime probability of failure is evaluated via the application of a time-discretization strategy.

Verification Of Pilot-Scale Iron Release Models, Stephen Glatthorn Jan 2007

Verification Of Pilot-Scale Iron Release Models, Stephen Glatthorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A model for the prediction of color release from a pilot distribution system was created in 2003 by Imran. This model allows prediction of the release of color from aged cast iron and galvanized steel pipes as a function of water quality and hydraulic residence time. Color was used as a surrogate measurement for iron, which exhibited a strong linear correlation. An anomaly of this model was an absence of a term to account for pH, due to the influent water being well stabilized. A new study was completed to evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors against traditional adjustment. Two …
