The Role Of Zinc Particle Size And Loading In Cathodic Protection Efficiency, Qiang Wang Dec 2012

The Role Of Zinc Particle Size And Loading In Cathodic Protection Efficiency, Qiang Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Metallic additives, also known as anticorrosive pigments, can provide sacrificial cathodic protection and complement the barrier protection afforded by heterogeneous organic coatings to metallic substrates. The unique systematic study of the corrosion resistance of an epoxy coating reinforced with different sizes (80nm, 500nm, 10um) and continuous multiple pigment volume concentration (0, 2%, 10%, 20%, 45%) below global critical pigment volume concentration of zinc particles were studied. The thesis is developing the fundamental understanding to optimize corrosion protection and predicting the protection with time. The properties of these cathodic coatings were investigated by a single-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open …

Durability Of Reinforced Concrete Incorporating Crushed Waste Brick As Coarse Aggregate, Matthew Adamson Dec 2012

Durability Of Reinforced Concrete Incorporating Crushed Waste Brick As Coarse Aggregate, Matthew Adamson

All Theses

Using crushed bricks as aggregates in concrete is of particular interest to preserve natural aggregate sources as well as to reduce waste, as it has been estimated that 10% to 30% of all waste in landfills in the united States comes from construction and demolition wastes. By recycling some of these wastes, the sustainability of a project can be improved. However, it is important concrete incorporating these wastes is as durable or more durable then conventional concrete, or will it have a shorter service life. Durability of concrete is its ability to resist deterioration from its external environment such as …

Study On Corrosion Activity Of Carbon Steel In Concrete Simulated Pore Solution Under Static Tensile And Compressive Stresses, Yujie Zhang

All Theses

Reinforced concrete is a structure material made up of concrete with relatively lower tensile strength containing reinforcements with higher tensile strength and better ductility, which are embedded into fresh concrete to resist tensile stress in certain regions of concrete. Steel reinforced concrete is most widely used around the world in civil engineering structures, water conservancy and highway construction due to its durability strength and reasonable cost.
However, reinforced concrete structures such as bridges and parking lots slabs inevitably experience variable loads and constant degradation from the aggressive environments, such as marine and deicing salts. Therefore, it is imperative to study …

Rust-Expansion-Crack Service Life Prediction Of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridge/Viaduct Using Time-Dependent Reliability Analysis, Ming-Te Liang, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Han-Tung Chang, Chi-Jang Yeh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

It is necessary to develop a calculation method to help in the making of feasible, reliable, and serviceable predictions for the service lives of bridge or viaduct structures. This article presents the basis for doing rust-expansion-crack service life predictions for existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges and viaducts in chloride-laden environments based on timedependant reliability modeling due to the corrosion of steel in concrete. The corrosion process has three stages, the initiation (diffusion or carbonation) time (ti = tc), the depassivation time (tp), and the propagation (corrosion) time (tcorr). The rustexpansion-crack service lives (tcr) of existing RC bridges or viaducts can …

Safety Stock Estimation Of Unit Load Devices For International Airline Operations, Hua-An Lu, Chien-Yi Chen Aug 2012

Safety Stock Estimation Of Unit Load Devices For International Airline Operations, Hua-An Lu, Chien-Yi Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Unit load devices (ULDs) are used to load air cargo and passengers’ checked baggage for wide-bodied aircraft operations. Since ULDs are reusable at the destination, airlines can invest in an appropriate fleet size for their requirements. The estimation of safety stock levels for every operating airport is a premeditated task because airlines must prepare enough devices for the outbound consignments of each flight. The variance of the number of used devices for each arrival and departure flight will influence the stock level of an airport. For scheduled international services, this study proposes an analytic method based on a cyclically time-sequenced …

In Vitro Studying Corrosion Behaviour Of Biocorrodible Mg Alloys, Sina S. Jamali, Simon Moulton, Maria Forsyth, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The idea of bioabsorbable/biocorrodible stents has gained increasing attention in the last decade. Permanent coronary stents, traditionally made from 316L grade stainless steel, are routinely used for the treatment of blocked arteries. However, these stents can cause complications such as restenosis, thrombosis and the need for the patient to undergo prolonged antiplatelet therapy. Biodegradable metal stents provide an opportunity for the stent to remain in place for a period to ensure restoration of function and then degrade through a carefully controlled bio-corrosion process. Among the number of potentially suitable materials, Magnesium alloys have shown great promise as a stent material …

The Effects Of Uncommon Silicides On The Oxidation Of Alloys From The Nb-Cr-Si System, Daniel Brendan Voglewede

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Niobium based alloys are being tapped as potential successors to current nickel base superalloys in high temperature applications. In the aerospace industry, high temperature materials are constantly being pushed to higher temperature regimes in order to improve engine efficiency however current superalloys cannot be pushed further due to melting temperature limitations. Niobium, being a refractory metal, can withstand much higher temperatures than nickel however its oxidation properties are woefully inadequate.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether increased silicon additions can improve niobium oxidation properties by: forming ternary silicides with better oxidation properties and by preventing the formation …

Thermal energy storage is a major contributor to bridge the gap between energy demand (consumption) and energy production (supply) by concentrating solar power. The utilization of high latent heat storage capability of phase change materials is one of the keys to an efficient way to store thermal energy. However, some of the limitations of the existing technology are the high volumetric expansion and low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs), low energy density, low operation temperatures and high cost. The present work deals with encapsulated PCM system, which operates at temperatures above 500°C and takes advantage of the heat …

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh Jan 2012

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh

Theses

Repair and strengthening of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased drastically in recent years. Shear reinforcement in RC beams is typically of a small bar diameter, and hence any shear-damage would result in a severe safety hazard and a catastrophic mode of failure especially under extreme loading events. The present work was initiated to the effectiveness of different composite strengthening systems; namely externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (EB-CFRP), and near surface mounted glass fiber reinforced polymer (NSM-GFRP) to prolong the functional service life of RC beams pre-damaged in shear. It comprised experimental testing and analytical investigation.

The experimental …
