P-Version Time-Discontinuous Galerkin's Method For Nonlinear Transient Heat Transfer Analysis And Sensitivity Analysis, Ta-Cheng Chien Jan 2005

P-Version Time-Discontinuous Galerkin's Method For Nonlinear Transient Heat Transfer Analysis And Sensitivity Analysis, Ta-Cheng Chien

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The finite element method is a powerful tool for approximating the solution of most engineering problems. Traditionally, the finite element method uses linear approximation of field variables over each element, where numerical results converge to the exact solution by increasing the number of elements. A newer finite element method called the p-version finite element method uses higher-order elements which assume a polynomial of order p for the approximation on each element. Here, the approximation will achieve accuracy without increasing the number of elements but by increasing the value of order p.

The focus of this research is on …

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri Oct 2004

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

CPortS is a transportation logistics simulation that models the flow of military cargo through a seaport and the interaction of the cargo with the port resources and infrastructure. It provides information about the seaport's capabilities, how the cargo has been handled, how many days the cargo took to clear a particular port area, and the overall throughput of the seaport. The model is highly data intensive since it models the huge traffic in a real seaport.

Bottlenecks reduce system performance. Systems that are traffic intensive or simulations of systems, which are data intensive, encounter bottlenecks, which reduce their performance. In …

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the rapid development in the computer and communication technologies, the Internet is experiencing an increasing demand of high-speed, real-time distributed applications, such as live streaming multimedia, videoconferencing, distributed simulations, and multiparty games. Multicast is an efficient transmission mechanism to support these applications. Historically, IP Multicast (IPM) has provided multicast support with well-known benefits, especially in bandwidth savings. However, it has experienced little deployment due to economic and architectural limitations.

Overlay multicast holds promise for the implementation of large scale Internet multicast services. An overlay network is a virtual topology constructed on top of the Internet infrastructure. This concept …

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy Oct 2004

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

People in the United States pay more for their basic healthcare needs than do people in any other nation in the world. When we consider that the United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, controlling the majority of the world's resources, it seems only reasonable to ask: Why should it be this way?

In an effort to address this problem, this thesis examines two possible methods of improving health care efficiency in hospitals. The thesis is thus in two parts: the first part examines resource allocation in medical units using Queuing Theory, and the second part examines a …

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang Oct 2004

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, nonlinear controllers are designed for the swing-up and balance modes of a rotational inverted pendulum, which is a pendulum hinged on a horizontally rotating link. The proposed control algorithms are designed by partial feedback linearization and sliding mode control techniques, for swing-up and balancing respectively. First a mathematical model of the pendulum dynamics is derived, followed by experimental verification. Then the system model is partially linearized, which makes it possible for the system to track a simple desired trajectory with "pump energy" function. Then a swing-up controller is designed. For an under-actuated mechanical system, like the inverted …

Huffman Approach To Opcode Compression, Jason B. Shreve Oct 2004

Huffman Approach To Opcode Compression, Jason B. Shreve

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Instructions are the building blocks of computer programs. They are composed of opcodes, which uniquely identify each instruction, and the operands or data. In most architectures, the instruction length is a set multiple of the word size. The size and number of operands vary by instruction. Due to programmer usage, program need, or compiler design, opcodes do not occur with a constant distribution. Likely, some opcodes occur very frequently, whereas others occur very infrequently or not at all. If the length of an opcode were representative of its frequency, compression in program size might be achieved.

This thesis is an …

Distal Placement Of An End-To-Side Bypass Graft Anastomosis A 3-D Computational Study, John Robert Di Cicco Oct 2004

Distal Placement Of An End-To-Side Bypass Graft Anastomosis A 3-D Computational Study, John Robert Di Cicco

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics study of blood flow through stenotic arteries has been conducted. Flow phenomena, such as separation regions and turbulence, can be found distal to an arterial stenosis. Frequently, a bypass graft using an end-to-side technique is attached to a stenotic artery to restore adequate blood flow. However, a significant percentage of these grafts fail after thirty postoperative days due to intimal hyperplasia development around the distal anastomosis. Moreover, aberrant wall shear rates have been implicated as a factor in the development of intimal hyperplasia. Thus, the present study examines whether placement of the distal end of …

Vector Operations In Superscalar Architectures, Nathan Daniel Flinn Oct 2004

Vector Operations In Superscalar Architectures, Nathan Daniel Flinn

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Vector calculations are very prevalent today. Though the vector-processing computer is quite an old concept, superscalar processors lack hardware support for vector operations. This thesis investigates whether an ordinary superscalar computer architecture can be designed to include hardware support for improved vector operations without drastically changing the existing superscalar design and behavior. A computer architecture design was created and implemented that included the vector multiply (dot product) operation. The design includes a Vector Operations Unit that captures incoming vector operations and generates the necessary set of machine instructions to complete the vector operation internally. It then delivers these instructions to …

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram Oct 2004

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) allow guiding light in low-index core. These fibers exhibit properties such as single-mode operation in broad wavelength region. The mode shape and group velocity dispersion can be controlled by designing the microstructures of the cladding. In order to study these properties, a fast, efficient, and highly accurate numerical modeling method is required.

A full-vectorial finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method is implemented. The modal properties of conventional step index fiber and index-guiding PCF are analyzed using this modeling technique. Compared to plane wave expansion and biorthogonal basis methods, FDFD is found to be simple, reliable, and efficient. PCFs …

An Algorithm For Locating Fundamental Frequency (F0) Markers In Speech, Princy Dikshit Oct 2004

An Algorithm For Locating Fundamental Frequency (F0) Markers In Speech, Princy Dikshit

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Speech has been the principal form of human communication since it began to evolve at least one hundred thousand years ago. Speech is produced by vibrations of the vocal cords. The rate of vibration of the cords is called fundamental frequency (F0) or pitch. The objective of this thesis is to locate pitch period cycles on a cycle-by-cycle basis. The complexity in identifying pitch cycles stems from the highly irregular nature of human speech. Dynamic programming is used to combine two sources of information for pitch period marking. One source of information is the "local" information corresponding to the location …

Effects Of Initial Seated Position On Whiplash In Low Speed Rear-End Impacts Comparison And Study Using The Tno Rear Impact Dummy (Trid) Model, Manjunath P. Venkataramana Oct 2004

Effects Of Initial Seated Position On Whiplash In Low Speed Rear-End Impacts Comparison And Study Using The Tno Rear Impact Dummy (Trid) Model, Manjunath P. Venkataramana

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Despite numerous investigations devoted to its scrutiny, injury causing mechanism associated with rear-end impact collision producing injury such as Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) has remained a mystery. Several criteria have been proposed to predict the injury causing mechanism, but none have been universally accepted. The challenge lies in determining a set of testing procedures representative of real-world collisions, wherein the results obtained are not only the same as human testing, but remain consistent with various subjects and impact conditions. It is hypothesized that one of the most important considerations is the effect of initial seated position (ISP).

This thesis can …

Stability Analysis Of Jump-Linear Systems Driven By Finite-State Machines With Markovian Inputs, Sudarshan S. Patilkulkarni Jul 2004

Stability Analysis Of Jump-Linear Systems Driven By Finite-State Machines With Markovian Inputs, Sudarshan S. Patilkulkarni

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A control system with a fault recovery mechanism in the feedback loop and with faults occurring in a non-deterministic manner can be modeled as a class of hybrid systems, i.e., a dynamical system switched by a finite-state machine or an automaton. When the plant and controller are linear, such a system can be modeled as a jump-linear system driven by a finite-state machine with a random input process. Such fault recovery mechanisms are found in flight control systems and distributed control systems with communication networks. In these critical applications, closed-loop stability of the system in the presence of fault recoveries …

Qos Provisioning For Multi-Class Traffic In Wireless Networks, Mona El-Kadi Rizvi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Physical constraints, bandwidth constraints and host mobility all contribute to the difficulty of providing Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in wireless networks. There is a growing demand for wireless networks to support all the services that are available on wired networks. These diverse services, such as email, instant messaging, web browsing, video conferencing, telephony and paging all place different demands on the network, making QoS provisioning for wireless networks that carry multiple classes of traffic a complex problem. We have developed a set of admission control and resource reservation schemes for QoS provisioning in multi-class wireless networks.

We present three …

Dynamical Studies Of Model Membrane And Cellular Response To Nanosecond, High-Intensity Pulsed Electric Fields, Qin Hu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of electroporation of biological cells subjected to nanosecond, high intensity pulses are studied based on a coupled scheme involving the current continuity and Smoluchowski equations. The improved pore formation energy model includes a dependence on pore population and density. It also allows for variable surface tension and incorporates the effects of finite conductivity on the electrostatic correction term, which was not considered by the simple energy models in the literature. It is shown that E(r) becomes self-adjusting with variations in its magnitude and profile. The whole scheme is self-consistent and dynamic.

An electromechanical analysis based on thin-shell theory …

Uncertainty Propagation And Robust Design In Cfd Using Sensitivity Derivatives, Michele M. Putko Jul 2004

Uncertainty Propagation And Robust Design In Cfd Using Sensitivity Derivatives, Michele M. Putko

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates and demonstrates a methodology for uncertainty propagation and robust design in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Efficient calculation of both first- and second-order sensitivity derivatives is requisite in the proposed methodology. In this study, first- and second-order sensitivity derivatives of code output with respect to code input are obtained through an efficient incremental iterative approach.

An approximate statistical moment method for uncertainty propagation is first demonstrated on a quasi one-dimensional (1-D) Euler CFD code. This method is then extended to a two-dimensional (2-D) subsonic inviscid model airfoil problem. In each application, given statistically independent, random, normally distributed input …

Real-Time Measurements On The Effects Of Ultra-Short High Voltage Pulses On Hl-60 Cells, Michalis C. Artemiou Jul 2004

Real-Time Measurements On The Effects Of Ultra-Short High Voltage Pulses On Hl-60 Cells, Michalis C. Artemiou

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The application of high voltage microsecond pulses that are above a critical value, to biological cells, has been shown to cause electroporation (Neumann, 1989). In addition, ultra-short pulses of several tens to hundreds of nanoseconds duration have been recently shown to affect intracellular structures without disturbing the plasma membrane (Schoenbach, 2001). However, such ultra-short intense pulses are expected to cause deformation of cells due to Maxwell stresses. This deformation was studied by means of an imaging technique with 10 ns temporal resolution on HL-60 cells. The imaging system consists of an inverted microscope where a spark light source was used …

Energy-Landscape-Model Analysis For Irreversibility And Its Pulse-Width Dependence In Cells Subjected To A High-Intensity Ultrashort Electric Pulse, R. P. Joshi, Q. Hu, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe Jul 2004

Energy-Landscape-Model Analysis For Irreversibility And Its Pulse-Width Dependence In Cells Subjected To A High-Intensity Ultrashort Electric Pulse, R. P. Joshi, Q. Hu, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe

Bioelectrics Publications

We provide a simple, but physical analysis for cell irreversibility and apoptosis in response to an ultrashort (nanosecond), high-intensity electric pulse. Our approach is based on an energy landscape model for determining the temporal evolution of the configurational probability function p(q). The primary focus is on obtaining qualitative predictions of a pulse width dependence to apoptotic cell irreversibility that has been observed experimentally. The analysis couples a distributed electrical model for current flow with the Smoluchowski equation to provide self-consistent, time-dependent transmembrane voltages. The model captures the essence of the experimentally observed pulse-width dependence, and provides a possible physical picture …

Field Effect Control Of Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena In Nanofluidics, Song Xue Jul 2004

Field Effect Control Of Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena In Nanofluidics, Song Xue

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Naturally nanofluidics has applications demanding the samples to be handled in exceedingly small quantities due to the small size of the fluidic channels in nanofluidic devices, such as characterization of single biomolecules. Fluids confined in channels of nanometer characteristic dimensions exhibit physical behaviors not observed in large conduits. Charge properties of the nanochannel wall in contact with an aqueous solution play essential roles in the involved electrokinetic transport phenomena occurring in nanofluidic devices. In addition to tuning the charge properties of the nanofluidic channel wall by adjusting the solution properties such as pH and background salt concentration, field effect transistor …

Performance Of Constraint-Handling Techniques Applied To A Genetic Algorithm-Based Watershed Management Model, Kwisun Park Yu Jul 2004

Performance Of Constraint-Handling Techniques Applied To A Genetic Algorithm-Based Watershed Management Model, Kwisun Park Yu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wet detention ponds are a commonly used structural best management practice to reduce nonpoint source pollutant loading into receiving water bodies. Design of these ponds is typically carried out individually to meet a target total suspended solids (TSS) removal level. An improvement to this approach is to generate cost-effective pond configurations that meet system-wide targets for removal of pollutant loadings, corresponding to a specific build-out land use plan. The cost-effectiveness can be further improved through appropriate land use allocation planning conducted simultaneously with the design of detention ponds. Harrell and Ranjithan (2003) presented an evolutionary algorithm- (EA-) based modeling approach …

Modeling Nerve Electro-Stimulation In The Nanosecond Regime, Feng Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Numerical simulations of electrical stimulation of frog gastrocnemius muscles have been carried out for pulse durations in the nanosecond regime. There are a number of potential advantages in using ultra-short pulses for neural stimulation, and no previous electro-stimulation work in the sub-microsecond regime has been reported. A timedependent, three-dimensional analysis model was developed and implemented for three distinct situations: (i) direct stimulation via electrode contact, (ii) indirect excitation based on electrodes immersed in a saline-filled bath, and (iii) remote electromagnetic stimulation through vacuum. The simulations yielded strength-dm ation (S-D) curves with pulse durations as short as 5 ns. Good agreement …

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu Apr 2004

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In practice, many large-scale linear programming problems are too large to be solved effectively due to the computer's speed and/or memory limitation, even though today's computers have many more capabilities than before. Algorithms are exploited to solve such large linear programming problems, either in the sequential or parallel computation environment. This study focuses on two parallel algorithms for solving large-scale linear programming problems efficiently.

The first parallel decomposition algorithm discussed in this study is from the theory problems in a special block-angular structure. The theory or the decomposition principle is first examined. Since the subproblems of a linear programming problem …

The Relationship Of Project Team Attributes To Project Interim Performance, Vickie S. Parsons Apr 2004

The Relationship Of Project Team Attributes To Project Interim Performance, Vickie S. Parsons

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The factors associated with project success, or failure, have not been conclusively resolved in the project management literature. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of project team attributes and interim project performance using a statistical research design. An abundance of research has focused solely on the importance of technical project components as they relate to cost, schedule, or technical performance. However, research into internal team attributes has been sporadic and, generally, associated with subjective measures of project performance or less than optimal statistical techniques. Prior assessment of project performance has also been concentrated at project completion. …
