Nontraditional undergraduate students are one of the fastest growing segments of .the student population on college campuses today. The purpose of this study was to discover if a sample of nontraditional undergraduate students perceived that Eastern Illinois University, a traditional, residential university, was meeting their foundational support needs.

A selected set of nontraditional undergraduate students completed an online survey about their perceptions of financial needs, medical and mental health needs, and use of general student support services on campus. The purpose of the present study was to explore female residence hall directors' perceptions of leadership style when leading a group of male resident assistants. This study was done specifically with female residence hall directors in the residence hall setting. Their thoughts on the ideal female leader and their own leadership styles were also explored through semi-structured interviews to ensure that the data were comparable across participants and to allow for flexibility to further explore topics that came up during the interviews.

This study examined the perceptions of female student-athletes at a mid-sized Midwest university. The current study aims to better understand the reasons for alcohol consumption by female student-athletes. This study will examine these reasons and help put in place predictors of extreme alcohol consumption by female student-athletes.

Results of this study were limited based on outside roles of the primary investigator. Five female student-athletes were interviewed about their experiences. The findings of this study will guide future research in the area. Future research for this topic should be done in greater numbers and use mixed methods.

The purpose of this study conducted, at a mid-sized Midwestern university, was to examine the ally development of heterosexual college students, specifically with gay, lesbian and bisexual populations. Five participants who were current college students, who self-identified as heterosexual allies, took part in open-ended life-history interviews in which they were asked to share their perspective on what may have affected their ally development. The interviews specifically probed what, if any, institutional resources, faculty or staff members may have assisted in their development, as well as if any precollege factors made them more susceptible to developing into an ally in college. …

The present qualitative study examined gender differences in rumination, co-rumination, depression, and relationship satisfaction. Response style theory, gender role socialization, and social norms are proposed to explain the gender differences in depression. The researchers conducted a study with undergraduate and graduate students at a mid-sized Midwest university campus. The sample in the present study consisted of 232 students. There were 106 males and 126 females. Participants took an online survey that consisted of the Response Style Questionnaire (RSQ), Co-Rumination Questionnaire (CRQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Multidimensional Questionnaire (MRQ). This mixed method study was designed to understand the impact of a first-year seminar on the college success of African American males at Eastern Illinois University. The primary . researcher conducted one on one interviews with nine African American males. Three participants enrolled in EIU 1111 (first year seminar) by choice, three enrolled in EIU 1111 by conscription, and three did not enroll in EIU 1111. The interviews were transcribed and themes were identified. The results from the interviews indicated that peer support and faculty and staff interaction outside of the classroom influenced college success.

The purpose of this research is to understand how elementary school counselors perceive the role and function of case manager in Chicago Public Schools. In this expanded role, elementary school counselors must continue their traditional counseling duties and incorporate case management activities as a part of their responsibilities. The case managers coordinate the special education program for students with disabilities.

This qualitative research study examined the ways that helping professionals experi- ence inspiration, as defined as divine guidance or influence, in their therapeutic work. It also explored their beliefs about how helping professionals can seek inspiration in their work. Open-ended survey questions from 333 respondents from a diverse range of religious and professional backgrounds were qualitatively analyzed. The themes ex- tracted give insight into the ways that these helping professionals have experienced inspiration in their work and about how helping professionals can facilitate a spiritual space in the therapeutic context.

The purpose of this study was to examine the job search perceptions of women recently interviewing for a Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) position. Six women were interviewed using a semi-structured initial interview process and a reflective follow up interview. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and sent back to the women for their review. The leadership characteristics of a 21 chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) within four-year, postsecondary institutions in the Southeast were examined using The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) developed by Kouzes and Posner. The LPI measures five fundamental leadership factors: challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, and encourage the heart. Each of these factors was investigated in relation to length of time in the current position, length in the student affairs profession, gender, and geographic location. Statistical analyses of performance on the LPI suggest that CSAOs tend to be most effective in leadership practices …

The literature on counselor education and supervision acknowledged the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in supervision. As counselor educators we emphasized a need to prepare students for reflective practice prior to the practicum experience. In order to investigate how active learning and opportunities were being infused, we conducted an inquiry into the core curriculum of a Community Counseling program. Learning activities were categorized and charted according to the eight core areas of counselor education. This case study analysis provides a guide for a curriculum review of reflective learning and a catalyst for further inquiry.

Career Experiences Of Counselor Educators: Early And Near-Tenure Experiences, Dana H. Levitt, David A. Hermon

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Counselor educators near the tenure years (5-10 years) experience challenges that differentiate them from their early and late career colleagues, regardless of tenure status. The following phenomenological study sought to ascertain the experiences of counselor education faculty during these distinct years of their academic careers. Eight counselor educators were interviewed and themes were derived, including a need for increased support pre- and post-tenure, adequate doctoral level preparation for faculty roles, and challenges in balancing the functions within and outside of the academy. Recommendations for current and emerging counselor educators are provided.

Metaphor use stands as a striking example of the creative drive of humans, with its ability to render understandable that which is highly convoluted, making it a natural partner and tool of the behavioral sciences. The use of data by school counselors has grown increasingly important over the past few years, and has a prominent place in the American School Counselor Association‟s National Model for School Counseling Programs. This study examines the effectiveness of four variations of a workshop designed to improve school counselors‟ data use skills. The workshops were designed to vary along two dimensions; the amount of conceptual knowledge participants were exposed to, and the amount of a technology application (EZAnalyze) participants were exposed to. The current study investigates the relationship between social support and the social self-concepts of gifted adolescents. Participants include 245 gifted students who had completed the fifth through the tenth grade during the previous academic year. Social self-concept was measured using the Self-Description Questionnaire II (Marsh, 1990). Social support was measured using the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (Malecki & Demaray, 2002). Results indicate multiple relationships between perceived social support and social self-concept, as well as a significant gender difference for the frequency of close friend social support.
