There is considerable evidence indicating great interest on the part of school counselors in the use of group procedures, but their reactions are mixed as to the effectiveness of such procedures. One reason for these mixed feelings is that many counselors question whether the group approach is a natural and appropriate way of being helpful to young people.

A Comparison Of The Turse Shorthand Aptitude Test Scores & Other Factors For Predicting Achievement Of Students In Beginning Shorthand Of Woodway Senior High School, Dellazine Moran

The first-year shorthand class of Woodway Senior High School was given the test instrument, The Turse Shorthand Aptitude Test, to determine whether achievement in shorthand could be predicted by the percentile rank achieved on The Turse Aptitude Test. Comparison was made of the shorthand grades; SCAT-Total, and Grade Point Averages. The only significant correlation found was between first semester grades of first-year shorthand and the overall grade point average which was significant at the .03 level. The second semester grades of first-year shorthand and the overall grade point average was significant at the .13 level.

A selected sample of six hundred ninth-grade public school students from six schools of the Jefferson County, Kentucky, school system was surveyed to determine their perceptions regarding selected counselor services. A questionnaire was designed made up of questions related to the hypotheses being tested. No distinction was made between male and female responses and students from all socio-economic classes and the various ability groups were included. The general problem to which this study was directed was the effect upon attitude and achievement of eighth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students, some of whom were underachievers themselves, tutoring other underachieving elementary school students.

The purpose of this study was to determine if high school counselors' predictive opinions of freshman college academic success were reliable indicators of actual college academic success achieved by freshman students.

Eleven null hypotheses were tested which involved high school counselors' opinions of college freshman grade point average and actual college grade point average achieved by freshmen in regard to the following variables: (1) sex of the counselor, (2) high school location, (3) sex of the student, (4) high school size, and (5) high school accreditation. The purpose of the study was to examine the Ellensburg School District's criteria for the identification of potential dropouts. Self-concept, as measured by the Adjective Check List, was used as an indicator of school problems typical of low achievers and dropouts. Students from the Ellensburg junior and senior high schools were administered the ACL. The results indicated that four of ten hypotheses derived from past research were substantiated for self and teacher ratings. These were ego organization for self ratings, and ego organization, social desirability and internal discomfort for teacher ratings. The evidence tended to support the criteria for identification …

Factors Related To Postparole Outcomes Of Juvenile Offenders, Marcia Crigler

Using factor analysis, two sets of predictive variables were selected from each of two randomly selected groups of Washington juveniles (Total n= 579) discharged from parole in 1971. Both sets of predictors were cross-validated using discriminant functions, and each set discriminated recidivists from nonrecidivists significantly beyond the .01 level. The eight-item set of predictors was slightly more accurate (1%) than the three-item set of predictors in determining postparole outcomes.

Central Washington State College Students' Perceptions Of Career Information Sources, Gary Michael Olson

This study presents students' reported utilization of career information sources. A 111 item questionnaire was administered to 278 students enrolled fall quarter, 1973, grouped by class level. Profiles are presented for each class level and summarize data on living situation, personal characteristics, career decision concerns, decision-making mode, information services, information sources, characteristics of sources used and personal information sources. The profiles summarize data which should be useful to indicate how various CE information sources and services at CWSC are used.
