Many hypotheses have been offered regarding the impact on learning caused by the most traditional practice of summative student evaluation, namely that of assigning marks to students. Sufficient evidence exists to suggest this practice often has detrimental effects. Institutions of higher education throughout the world are increasingly aware of the importance of working more systematically and productively with community and business leaders in order to create better local economies and, ultimately, better societies. This article presents an overview of how colleges and universities can assist with the identification and implementation of specific strategies for enhancing the economic development of the regions in which they are located. Also included is a discussion of the emerging advantages associated with developing these kinds of collaborative partnerships, as well as a brief overview of the major approaches to regional economic development.

To embrace this trend, the Office of Housing and Residence Life at Ball State University (IN) created learning outcomes for students living in residence halls. Through reflective questioning, discussion, and assessment, the Residence Life program strives to further the development and learning experience of students.

Recent research studies have determined that students with emotional and behavior disorders (EBD) are the most difficult to integrate into the general education environment. Students with EBD are most likely to be educated in separate settings and least likely to be found in traditional education environments. However, the mandate of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act reauthorized in 1997 (IDEA '97) and the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) regulation indicates all educators, including administrators, have the responsibility to challenge teachers and schools to be more inclusive regarding students with EBD and to provide services that better support students in this setting. …

This study explored the impact of place of residence on the academic achievement and retention of full-time, first-time-in-college students at an urban, public, primarily commuter university in the Southeast. Three groups of subjects were compared to ascertain if any group differences existed in regard to mean freshman grade point average, grades earned in a common course taken (Freshman English I), and retention into the second year of study. The three subject groups that were compared included residential learning community, traditional residence hall, and commuter students.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy related to reproduction, contraception, STD/HIV and sexual risk behaviors among high school students. The study featured a cluster sampling involving eleventh grade students from two high schools in Aguablanca District - Cali, Colombia. A cohort of 313 students completed an anonymous questionnaire with a 20–item scale that measured level of knowledge in reproduction, contraception and STD/HIV; 5 item-scale that measured attitudes and self-efficacy related to practices of protective sexual behavior; and a 5-item scale that measured intentions toward their capabilities to perform specific actions that …

As the United States experiences ever-increasing cultural diversity, school and mental health counselors are struggling to find an effective counseling style for these clients. This study focuses on students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). It addresses possible issues that LEP students will face, the things the counselors need to be aware of when counseling LEP students, the way to work with LEP students' parent(s), using various assessments to understand students, teaming with the English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, using interpreters, and applying the community counseling model as a guideline to counsel LEP students.

The purpose of this research was to investigate parents' perceptions of ideal adult lives for their children with significant cognitive challenges. Additionally, this researcher investigated what role disability played in participants' concepts of ideal adult lives for their children with disabilities. For the purpose of this dissertation, significant cognitive challenge was defined as a person having an IQ below 50 and an expected need of 24 hour a day care during adulthood. The purpose of this study was to identify transitional needs of first year graduate students who have housing assistantships. Previous research in this area identified academic adjustment, student support services, assistantship experiences, and graduate student socialization as important variables to examine. A qualitative study was conducted using a focus group interview of four participants to examine these variables.
