Although most students take at least one high school civics course, civic education often emphasizes the memorization of governmental facts rather than preparing students with the skills needed for active civic participation. Trauma can impact an individual’s ability to function in daily occupations and tasks (SAMHSA, 2014). Traumainformed care focuses on six principles in order to support individuals who have experienced trauma: safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and empowerment; choice; and cultural, historical, and gender sensitivity (SAMHSA, 2014). Incorporating these principles allows trauma-informed care to shift the focus from “what is wrong with you?” to “what happened to you?” (Sweeney et al., 2018). This presentation was conducted for a national conference about mentoring. The authors discussed Tinto’s Model of Institutional Departure and Schlossberg’s Model for Analyzing Human Adaptation to Transition as theoretical frameworks to explain the transition and retention of university professors. The focus on the study was the three authors who transitioned to the same university during the 2022-2023 academic year. Authors discussed their experiences of the transition and found themes related to the mentoring process that that acclimated them to the institution and influenced their retention.

Given a growing asset-based approach to equipping English Learners (ELs) with the knowledge and skills to enter and succeed in postsecondary education, this brief examines ELs’ college readiness and postsecondary education outcomes in California. It includes a brief summary of relevant literature on college readiness among EL students. Researchers then present data retrieved from the California Department of Education on college readiness and postsecondary education. The results show that EL students lack access to college preparatory courses, have a low rate of meeting the state’s College/Career Indicator, and enroll in postsecondary education at lower rates than other groups.
