The purpose of the study was to examine the Ellensburg School District's criteria for the identification of potential dropouts. Self-concept, as measured by the Adjective Check List, was used as an indicator of school problems typical of low achievers and dropouts. Students from the Ellensburg junior and senior high schools were administered the ACL. The results indicated that four of ten hypotheses derived from past research were substantiated for self and teacher ratings. These were ego organization for self ratings, and ego organization, social desirability and internal discomfort for teacher ratings. The evidence tended to support the criteria for identification …

Factors Related To Postparole Outcomes Of Juvenile Offenders, Marcia Crigler

Using factor analysis, two sets of predictive variables were selected from each of two randomly selected groups of Washington juveniles (Total n= 579) discharged from parole in 1971. Both sets of predictors were cross-validated using discriminant functions, and each set discriminated recidivists from nonrecidivists significantly beyond the .01 level. The eight-item set of predictors was slightly more accurate (1%) than the three-item set of predictors in determining postparole outcomes.

Central Washington State College Students' Perceptions Of Career Information Sources, Gary Michael Olson

This study presents students' reported utilization of career information sources. A 111 item questionnaire was administered to 278 students enrolled fall quarter, 1973, grouped by class level. Profiles are presented for each class level and summarize data on living situation, personal characteristics, career decision concerns, decision-making mode, information services, information sources, characteristics of sources used and personal information sources. The profiles summarize data which should be useful to indicate how various CE information sources and services at CWSC are used.

Ecological Assessment Of Influences In The Development Of Gifted Young Children, Laura M. Piper

The home environment of eight gifted and eight nongifted children, matched for age and sex, was studied. The mothers of the children were given a structured interview and their responses were rated on six environmental variables hypothesized to be related to the development of intelligence and social ability. The study was designed to evaluate the assessment instrument and to obtain correlational data between the home environment and certain child development aspects. Correlations were significant on five of the six variables.

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children was administered to 80 Caucasian male and female children from the 4th and 5th grades in a central Washington elementary school. The test was administered under 4 conditions: (1) token contingent upon correct response, (2) verbal paise contingent upon correct response, (3) non-contingent token presentation and, (4) a control group under standardized testing procedures.

This experimental conditions had no significant effect on test results. Further analysis failed to show a differential effect of the treatment groups when high IQ scores were compared to low IQ scores or when treatment effect on test results was …

Anxiety And Empathy In Counselor-Trainees, Russel E. Lewis

The relationship between anxiety and empathy in counselor-

trainees was investigated. Subjects were graduate

students in counseling practicum and six clergymen in a

counseling extension course. Instruments were the Taylor

Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Truax Empathy Scale. Anxiety

and empathy ratings at the beginning and end of an academic

quarter were compared. Findings indicated a significant

decrease in anxiety over the period. No significant change

was found in empathy. There was no significant relationship

between the two variables.

The Effect Of A Learning Skills Course Including Group Counseling On Low Achievers In The Community College, Paul E. Borg

A Learning Skills course consisting of study skills, goal direction, and self-understanding was tested among volunteer community college low achievers. Treatment integrated didactic, group discussion, and affective experiences in 18 hour-long sessions. Nineteen subjects received treatment; 25 subjects formed a matched control group; and 41 non-volunteers formed two additional control groups. An apparent trend toward GPA improvement was noted for all groups, but all measurements on GPA and a study survey were non-significant.

An Experimental Study In The Use Of The Differential Aptitude Test To Assign Sehome High School Students To Various English Tracks, Elizabeth Mae Strand

This paper presents the use of an expectancy table, based on a pilot study using the DAT Sentence Subtest and Middle School Grade Point Average, to place students in the various English tracks at Sehome High School. Sixty students were placed in accordance with the English grade predictions of the expectancy tables and sixty were placed in accordance with middle school teacher-counselor recommendations. Significantly more students were placed correctly when the expectancy tables were used.

The analysis of interactions between individuals was developed primarily within the structure of classroom education. The historical development and refinement of educational interaction analysis was examined to set its use in the counseling situation into appropriate perspective. Many forms of interaction analysis have been used to investigate a wide range of variables. The review of the literature revealed discrepancies in the reported changes, if any, that took place in the verbal behavior of student counselors as a result of practicum training. To clarify this situation somewhat, this study attempted to observe student counselor verbal behavior change in association with practicum.

This study investigated the effects of group counseling on the self-concept of 40 junior high school students representative of a ninth grade class in one school district. A comparable control group was used. Self-concept was measured by the Tennessee Self Concept Scale. The scale was administered to all subjects before and after 16 hours of group counseling had been experienced by the experimental group. Congruence of real and ideal self-ratings after counseling, was tested on an Adapted California Q-set.
