The internship experience at Jackson Community College enabled the investigator to experience the actual functions of a community college counselor. It provided an opportunity to interact with staff members, interview different employers, and present placement information for students and faculty. Many times during the internship there were opportunities to plan specific objectives and implement them. Completing the actual objectives and responsibilities of a counselor in a community college setting has been extremely valuable. A traditional college class could not have duplicated these types of experiences.

A re-analysis of the Situational Attitudes Scale (SAS) was conducted to investigate lts generality, validity and reliability and to suggest a more conservative method of analyzing the data. Three forms of the SAS were developed under the name Situational Attitude Inventory. Forms A and B corresponded to the originals; they tested attitudes toward whites and blacks, respectively, in varying social situations. Form c was developed to test the validity of the social situations for differentiation among alternative referents, which included welfare, age, ethnicity, and physical characteristics. This article, which appeared in the January '72 edition of The School Counselor, talks about what counselors have done, doing, and what the author, a school counselor, thinks they should be doing. He discusses some factors operating to narrow the counselor's role: the student stereotype of counselors as "schedule-changers," the administrative view of counseling as a clerical function, the "psychiatric myth" which casts any person in a helping profession in the role of dream analyst and explorer of the dark unconscious. Anxiety And Empathy In Counselor-Trainees, Russel E. Lewis

The relationship between anxiety and empathy in counselor-

trainees was investigated. Subjects were graduate

students in counseling practicum and six clergymen in a

counseling extension course. Instruments were the Taylor

Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Truax Empathy Scale. Anxiety

and empathy ratings at the beginning and end of an academic

quarter were compared. Findings indicated a significant

decrease in anxiety over the period. No significant change

was found in empathy. There was no significant relationship

between the two variables.

The Effect Of A Learning Skills Course Including Group Counseling On Low Achievers In The Community College, Paul E. Borg

A Learning Skills course consisting of study skills, goal direction, and self-understanding was tested among volunteer community college low achievers. Treatment integrated didactic, group discussion, and affective experiences in 18 hour-long sessions. Nineteen subjects received treatment; 25 subjects formed a matched control group; and 41 non-volunteers formed two additional control groups. An apparent trend toward GPA improvement was noted for all groups, but all measurements on GPA and a study survey were non-significant.

An Experimental Study In The Use Of The Differential Aptitude Test To Assign Sehome High School Students To Various English Tracks, Elizabeth Mae Strand

This paper presents the use of an expectancy table, based on a pilot study using the DAT Sentence Subtest and Middle School Grade Point Average, to place students in the various English tracks at Sehome High School. Sixty students were placed in accordance with the English grade predictions of the expectancy tables and sixty were placed in accordance with middle school teacher-counselor recommendations. Significantly more students were placed correctly when the expectancy tables were used.

Recommendations include the administration of the DAT early enough in the eight grade year to make the results useful in English placement upon entry into …
