Higher education leaders have a tremendous responsibility as it relates to legal concerns. This guidebook is intended to assist leaders in higher education by providing factors for which administrators serving in a student affairs or higher education leadership role should consider. Workplace violence has been increasing in the United States for the past several decades. It affects everyone, not just those who have direct experience with it in employment situations. The authors describe the extent of the problem and provide recommendations regarding how managers and helping professionals can help prevent violent and abusive behavior from occurring in the workplace. They also describe proven strategies for effectively dealing with these kinds of incidents when they do materialize.

Bibliotherapy, defined most basically, is helping with books (Hynes & Hynes-Berry, 1994). Derived from the Greek words meaning book and therapy, bibliotherapy goals fall usefully into two categories. Clinical bibliotherapy, using books to facilitate specified therapeutic goals with those experiencing significant emotional or behavioral problems, involves trained health and mental health professionals such as psychologists, counselors, psychiatric nurses, or social workers. Developmental bibliotherapy, using books to address situational, transitional, and normal developmental issues, can be implemented by others, like educators or librarians, who work in helping roles. Little is known about the bullying experiences of Aboriginal school age children and young people. A Study Of Academic Achievement Differences Between The Genders, Marissa Housman

This study seeks to explore the academic achievement gap between male and female students by comparing grade point averages across genders. Specifically, the researcher hypothesized that such a gap exists and that females would academically surpass their male counterparts in the classroom. Participants consisted of 300 students in grades 5, 8, and 11 from a public school district in suburban New Jersey. Grade point average (GPA) was generated by converting letter grades into numbers (4.0-0.0) and then averaged. A two-way between-groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed the hypothesis that females have a higher average GPA than males, as a whole …

Assessing The Relationship Between Student Involvement And Academic Performance In Higher Education, Azurdee M. Garland

The study examined the relationship between the degree of involvement in co-curricular activities and academic performance, as measured by Grade Point Average (GPA) among college students enrolled at Western Kentucky University (WKU). Three hundred thirty-six sophomores were surveyed via TOPNET, an electronic registration management system, regarding their level of involvement in campus organizations and other factors, including employment status and gender. The cumulative GPAs and the number of credit hours in which the survey participants were enrolled during Fall Semester 2005 were obtained through a survey using TOPNET. The Case of Olav (Stålsett, Engedal, & Austad, 2010) offers in-depth insight from a spiritually and existentially informed psychodynamic perspective of how religious and spiritual issues may be intertwined with psychopathology. This case report also shows how psychological and spiritual interventions can be used in an integrative manner to help patients with severe long- term psychopathology. Ultimately the case provides convincing quantitative and qualitative evidence that an in-depth working through of Olav’s pathological inner representations of self and God were instrumental in his psycho-spiritual healing and recovery.

In the United States, the preferred method for treating alcohol and drug addictions is the abstinence based approach. While most American mental health professionals use this approach, studies over time have demonstrated that relapse rates remain high. In Europe, the harm reduction approach, in which the primary goal is to decrease the harms associated with substance use, is beginning to be implemented as an additional approach to abstinence. This study delineated how the Boyer (1990) model of scholarship has been implemented in counselor education. The taxonomy of scholarship was delineated: Scholarship of Discovery, Scholarship of Teaching, Scholarship of Application, and Scholarship of Integration. The Journal of Counseling and Development and Counselor Education and Supervision were examined from 2000 to 2008. Examples of scholarship from each journal were identified. Evidence of the Boyer model in premier counseling journals suggests a consistency of approach between this model and scholarly activities in counselor education. The authors introduce a pedagogical paradigm for international graduate students studying community counseling in the United States. The paradigm is based on previous research conducted by the authors on the educational experience of four international graduate students in a master‟s level community counseling program. The paradigm includes five phases and is in the form of a path with an emphasis on respecting the world cultures of students from other countries and addressing the special needs of international students studying in the United States. The paradigm contributes to the ongoing dialog related to the pedagogy of counselor education.

Race Obsession-Avoidance Paradox: A Model For Multicultural Training In Counselor Education, Rebecca A. Willow

The ability to discuss race-related issues is critical to multicultural competence. Counselor educators who address race-related issues in the classroom cite student resistance as a challenge to competency development. The Race Obsession-Avoidance Paradox (ROAParadox) identifies juxtaposed obsession and avoidance about race as a cultural phenomenon. The ROAParadox model was applied in a multicultural counseling course as a strategy for educating counseling students. Teaching scenarios illustrate the use of this model as a strategy to facilitate discussions on race relations and racism. Student responses and implications for teaching applications are provided along with recommendations for future research.

Perceptions Of Counseling Integration: A Survey Of Counselor Educators, Andre Marquis, Deborah Hudson, Mike Tursi

Counselor educators were surveyed in order to assess their knowledge of integrative counseling approaches, their views regarding the importance of such approaches, and how much emphasis on integrative counseling is given in their counseling courses. A large majority of participants reported that integration in counseling is very important and that they emphasize it in their teaching of counseling theories and/or methods courses. Implications of these findings are discussed, including suggestions for counselor educators and counseling journals.

This article describes an experiential model for applicant selection in a master‟s level counselor education graduate program. While nonintellectual aspects are emphasized in the model, some traditional measures are also considered. The program‟s emphasis on counselor self-awareness and personal characteristics is articulated. A discussion of the model's rationale, the interpersonal aspects of candidate selection and a discussion of the group- oriented interviewing process is provided. Contemporary and future challenges for application selection models in Counselor Education programs are articulated.

School counselor preparation programs must train students in counseling skills while addressing the unique factors related to counseling in an educational setting. One way to approach this task is to utilize the general and school counseling standards set forth by CACREP (2009) as a framework for program planning. This article describes one university‟s course sequencing, program specific courses, and strategies and assignments designed to meet the particular educational needs of future professional school counselors as well as incorporate the CACREP (2009) standards.

Family therapists and school counselors are increasingly called upon to provide services for youth in alternative education (Carver, Lewis, & Tice, 2010). Alternative education systems are programs for youth who have been defined as at risk. This study explored the at-risk discourse and asked the questions (a) how do youth and staff define the term at risk, (b) construct their experience in alternative education systems, and (c) experience their relationships with each other.

Drinking during pregnancy can lead to several physical, neurological and behavioral effects. However, there are several interventions that can help minimize the effects of prenatal alcohol. Focusing on family interventions and therapies will best benefit the lives of children with FASD and their families.
