The Objectives Of Primary Reading, Leona L. Zarling Apr 1929

The Objectives Of Primary Reading, Leona L. Zarling

Bachelors’ Theses

Recent investigations in reading have shown us the need for adaptation of methods to the needs of modern social life, and the broadening of the school curriculum. The National committee on Reading has adopted three major objectives of reading.

The first of these is to give rich and varied experience in reading. Since reading aims to prepare a child to live a fuller and more intelligent life, early reading should aid in establishing a good fund of information, and thereby should broaden his interests and help him to understand and interpret future situations. Care in selection of materials will help …

Story Telling Helps To Develop Creative Powers In The Intellect Of The Child, Genevieve A. Roncke Jun 1928

Story Telling Helps To Develop Creative Powers In The Intellect Of The Child, Genevieve A. Roncke

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is primarily concerned with the development of creative powers in the intellect of the child. It would be well to determine exactly what is meant by "creative" as it will be treated here. To think of creation disentangled from change would be as futile as to connote man without soul. Change, then, is the distinguishing feature of creation, as soul is of man. Creative power is first manifested in creative thought, its colder, more hardy variety called reason.

Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan Apr 1927

Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

There are several reasons why our pupils have not learned 1 to talk well: 1. There has not been enough of oral language work, as a separate and distinct training, in the elementary school. 2. Oral work has not been utilized as much as it ought to be as an aid, and a preparation for, written work. A child who is to be taught to write well, must first be taught to talk well. 3. The other school subjects have not been utilized as effectively as they might be to develop power in oral composition. 4. The school has constantly …

The Teaching Of English In The Elementary Schools, Julia Agnes Regan Jun 1925

The Teaching Of English In The Elementary Schools, Julia Agnes Regan

Bachelors’ Theses

From one point of view the significance of the development of modern education can best be estimated by the progress of the mother-tongue toward the central place in formal instruction. When the study of the mother-tongue and its literature is made the core of the curriculum, education is something quite different from that training in which a foreign, perhaps an ancient tongue holds the chief place. We have been told by one school of critics that the mother-tongue need not be taught, for it will be picked up somehow; by another, that it cannot be taught, for there is nothing …

An Account Of Experiments In Teaching Reading Devised And Directed, Harry B. Wilson Jan 1924

An Account Of Experiments In Teaching Reading Devised And Directed, Harry B. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of the experiments was threefold; first, that teachers might have an opportunity to discover the actual conditions in their own class rooms in comparison with statements of writers on education; second, that, in trying out recommended procedures, they might acquire a desire to investigate and develop a scientific attitude toward their work; third, that a more wholesome respect for the opinions of scientific investigators might obtain. The subject of reading is of such fundamental importance and has occupied so prominent a place in the field of investigation that it seemed reasonable to treat it in discussions in teachers' …

A Review Of The Pedagogical Studies In The Teaching Of Spelling, Mary A. Grupe Sep 1913

A Review Of The Pedagogical Studies In The Teaching Of Spelling, Mary A. Grupe

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Despite the fact that a few far-seeing men have, from the early years of the eighteenth century, inveighed against the dominance of spelling and the "cruel drudgery" it entailed upon the learner, the subject remained an independent discipline far into the nineteenth century. To be able to spell was the criterion whereby to judge the educated man and so ingrained did this become in the popular mind that even to this day our grandfathers, nay our fathers, dubiously shake their heads because spelling no longer occupies a conspicuous place on the schoolroom program and because, as they insist, the rising …
