Exploring The Role Music Can Play In Improving The Teaching Of Poetry In One Secondary School In Uganda, Fortunate Letaru

This study explored the role of music in improving the teaching of Poetry. Employing a Qualitative approach through Action Research design, the study utilized interviews, classroom observations, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather data on students' responses to the music integration, teacher challenges, and strategies for overcoming them. The study found that music increased engagement, interest, and emotional connection, but challenges like lack of gadgets, administrative support, and infrastructure were addressed through strategies like providing technology, involving students, and incorporating diverse genres. These results suggest valuable contributions to the development of innovative pedagogical approaches that seamlessly integrate music …

Schools are often sites of hegemony, where certain knowledge and voices are prioritized over others. This hierarchy frequently discounts students as producers of their own knowledge, ignoring the wisdom gleaned from their lived experiences, diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and cultural communities. While the study of literature inside a high school English classroom can be fruitful for students to acquire empathy and perspective, it is only effective when it is equitable. When teachers collaborate around student writing with the support of a literacy coach, their practice becomes more intentional, and their students grow as writers. The aim of this study was to explore writing teachers’ language and practice as they engaged in a professional learning community around a single unit of study for poetry writing with the support from a coach. The findings reveal a recursive process of collaborative professional learning that includes the following phases: assess, analyze, teach, reflect, adjust. This article reports on a study of how a class of fifteen- and sixteen-year-old gifted high school students “mixed” the media of poetry and comics to unveil and interrogate (what they called) their “nerd identities.” Both co-authors constructed and co-taught a class within a literature-based comics course that led students through various writing processes that focused on the visual and textual properties of poetry and comics. The topic of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) remains a prevalent issue globally and despite the best efforts of welfare organisations, it would seem that as a society we are no closer to a resolution. CSA is a topic that is discussed in vague terms, but the real impact of CSA on the child is rarely divulged, except behind closed doors. This thesis examines the pedagogical usefulness of the antithetical reading model of textual deformation for the study of poetic works. No formal pedagogical plan exists for the education of students in poetic studies through textual deformance. This thesis does not go as far as structuring one in its entirety. As part of my analytical process of looking at data collected from a pilot study on the use of film in the classroom, I discovered that I had the space to engage in a creative analysis process. In this article, I propose that creative methods be employed when analyzing data.
