Some Current Problems In English Education, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Information Bulletin 1945-1951

On the question of organisition at the secondary level Australia, as a whole has not given evidence of any very clear-cut policy. The common practice is to provide separate academic and technical schools in the capital cities and large country towns with certain intermediate types of school which may have a bias in one direction and may act primarily: as “feeders” to schools giving more advanced courses. Except in Tasmania the “modern school” has not emerged very explicitly. In many of the smaller country centres, however, we find dual or multi-purpose schools. It is not easy to say whether these …

In fact, most of the teaching in our schools today revolves around the textbook - the cause of much criticism by many writers. They deplore the fact that both our teachers and pupils are dependent on textbooks.

A brief study of the countless ages covered by the development of writing from its most primitive state to that employed by the nations of today, and how our own alphabet has reached such a high stage of development through the slow but steady improvements made by our ancestors may help us to realize the importance and great magnitude of this heritage and inspire us to teach it to our children in such a way as to give them "a common understanding of the past and a vision of the future." It may help them to know about the thoughts …

The Period Of Rapid Progress In Fundamental Reading Attitudes, Habits, And Skills: Second Year, Arabelle T. Weich May 1933

The Period Of Rapid Progress In Fundamental Reading Attitudes, Habits, And Skills: Second Year, Arabelle T. Weich

Bachelors’ Theses

"The justification of any subject in the curriculum is that it enables pupils to engage effectively in desirable life activities."

If the training accomplishes this and so makes better citizens, then its inclusion is justified. Instruction in reading should take into account the reading experiences of children and adults both in school and social life. We must therefore first consider the kind of reading adults do. That will be the kind children will have to learn to do better. A great change has occurred in the educational field in the last years. The course of study has been greatly enriched. …

The purpose of this paper is to present the general objectives of all reading activities, and, more specifically, the aims in each of the first three grades; to state, to discuss, and to evaluate the various methods …

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden Jun 1932

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden

Bachelors’ Theses

I shall attempt to show, in this thesis, the importance and· feasibility of pre-primer reading as an adequate foundation for primer reading. While pre-primer reading has taken an important place in the curriculum during recent years, there has been an ever-increasing interest taken as to its value, especially to children of low intelligence and to foreign children. I have obtained my references, to a large extent from William S. Gray and Laura Zirbes in their article on Primary Reading which appears in the Class Room Teacher Volume II, and also from articles on reading which are given in The Twenty-Fourth …

The Prime Aim Of Teaching Latin Should Be For Its Cultural Value Rather Than The Correlative Or Disciplinary Values, Xavier University Of Louisiana May 1932

The Prime Aim Of Teaching Latin Should Be For Its Cultural Value Rather Than The Correlative Or Disciplinary Values, Xavier University Of Louisiana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In choosing subjects of this nature there are certain causes or reasons which influence such a choice. In this case it is not my purpose to offer a defense for the study of Latin as an educational subject, nor is it my purpose to propose a special method of presenting Latin as to make it a more attractive part of the curriculum. I am influenced principally by the fact that among educators and Latin teachers themselves there is a widespread divergence of opinion as to what ought to be aims of teaching Latin.

Diagnostic And Remedial Measures In Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Elsie Dickerhoff Thompson

Bachelors’ Theses

"The development of reading as a branch of study began with the Reformation. This widespread movement necessitated on the part of the common people a familiarity with the Bible, and as a result reading and writing were introduced into the elementary curriculum and training in them became general." Schulte in 1532 published the A.B.C. books which he tried to make more interesting for children. Basedaw 1723-1790 aided by advocating the …

Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney May 1931

Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney

Bachelors’ Theses

Reading has always had a place of first importance in the elementary school curriculum. However radical changes have taken place in the teaching of reading during the last twenty years. A generation ago, emphasis was placed upon oral reading, but it is recognized today that silent reading needs more teaching emphasis than oral reading because it is recognized that silent reading is used far more in the daily life of the individual. The average person encounters numerous situations daily when he is called upon to get the thought from the printed page and apply it in his life. In comparison …

Phonics A General Survey Of The Subject, Mary Rosalie Aug 1929

Phonics A General Survey Of The Subject, Mary Rosalie

Bachelors’ Theses

"Phonics is a term usually applied to the study of sounds as they are related to reading." Its aim is to give the child power in the independent recognition of words, therefore, a knowledge of the use of phonics has always been considered a necessary part of the primary teacher's equipment, and probably no question has been more widely asked in the field of primary reading, than, "How and when shall phonics be taught?"
