Although substantial research has been conducted regarding the instruction of reading, students are still not reaching a desired level of reading competency (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). The Reading First program was established to address this dilemma. In order to examine the impact the Reading First method of teaching reading had on the schools in Arkansas, a population was identified and classified into four categories: funded Reading First and non-funded Reading First, and matched control groups for both funded and non-funded. This study seeks to find out whether the quality of students’ writing improves substantially through collaboration. It is to gain an understanding into how collaborative work can aid the learning and teaching of writing in a typical Malaysian classroom. Moreover, the need to engage with others is an essential element for maintaining motivation in learning. The research methodology utilises an experimental approach. First, a pre-test was conducted in which subjects composed an essay individually. This descriptive quantitative research study explored if a focus on Reading Apprenticeship strategies and routines in a college level composition class would affect students' metacognitive awareness and comprehension of academic text. Participants included 141 students from one junior college in a southeastern state. The 141 participants were enrolled by choice in six sections of composition taught by three instructors who had all received extensive training in implementing the Reading Apprenticeship framework in their classes. The participants were administered the Revised-Curriculum Embedded Reading Assessment (CERA) twice (pre and post intervention) during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 school year. This study examined whether interactive multimedia (IM) and interactive websites (IW) have an impact on Millennials' self-directed learning in Chinese pronunciation and tones. A set of multimedia kits and several interactive websites were adopted for the study. Twenty-six volunteer German high school girls were involved in this study and were divided into two groups for two treatment conditions. It is mid-July in one of the hottest locations of the southeastern United States. Forty teachers have shown up, some willingly and others under pressure, to participate in five days of professional development and with the requirement that they must create products by the end of the experience. This scenario was the backdrop in which foreign language teachers from Richmond County in Augusta, Georgia, began their journey to learn about performance-based assessment. What happened over the course of those five July days in 2007 was nothing less than remarkable. This article describes that experience.

In selecting the theme for the 2009 conference, the SCOLT Executive Board wanted to emphasize the need for languages outside traditional career paths and the ways that language professionals can contribute to those careers; thus was born the idea of “Empowerment through Collaboration.” The SCOLT Board invited spokespersons from non-profit agencies and business organizations to share information about their need for languages via special collaborative sessions during the conference. The purpose of this fourth-grade reading curriculum is to teach students to become active readers who can articulate and communicate their thoughts about reading. By communicating about text, readers construct meaning and develop a rich understanding and appreciation of their reading. The curriculum uses the reading workshop framework (Atwell, 1998; Calkins, 2001; Rief, 1992) and the literature circle structure (Daniels, 2002). Process- and content-based mini-lessons provide explicit instruction for literature circle discussions. Comprehension strategy mini-lessons are provided to complement the literature circle instruction and provide support for students as needed.

The experience of Project TEEACH based at the University of Alabama suggests that simple technology tools could be used effectively to support teachers through their most challenging instructional situations. This study offers an analysis of media literacy practices and techniques used at local public middle and high schools in Colorado. Media literacy is an emerging field in education that blends literacy skills such as critical analysis and evaluation with an inquiry-based questioning process that encourages students to process information using cognitive, moral, aesthetic and emotional dimensions. As an English teacher, I want my students to engage in meaningful thinking about the issues in the literature we explore. Discussion is a valuable way to encourage this engagement, especially as I push discussions beyond the teacher-led, traditional IRE (teacher initiation, student response, teacher evaluation) format (Cazden, 2001). As I try to encourage discussions where students ask more of the questions and listen and respond to—and even critique—each other’s ideas, I believe that we come closer to achieving more meaningful thinking. However, I still find classroom discussions to be one of the more challenging aspects of my job.

Writing center directors (WCDs) often situate their programs in physical and virtual spaces without fully studying the pedagogical and political implications of their decisions. Without intense study, writing centers risk building programs within spaces that undermine their missions and philosophies. In The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre argues that "From the analytic standpoint, the spatial practice of a society is revealed through the deciphering of its space" (38). The study of space also reveals important political and financial priorities within the institution.
