Davidson Honors College Students Prematurely Declare Major Studies Prior To Entering College, Noah P. Hill Jan 2019

Davidson Honors College Students Prematurely Declare Major Studies Prior To Entering College, Noah P. Hill

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Choosing a college major is one of the most important decisions a student makes during the course of his or her academic career. While local and national trends suggest that it has become popular for high school students to declare a major prior to entering college, it is unlikely that 17- and 18-year-old students are adequately prepared to make decisions that affect not only their college experience, but also their long term vocations. Data obtained from a small sample of graduating seniors at the Davidson Honors College at the University of Montana suggests students may benefit from waiting to declare …

Advanced Placement (Ap) Computer Science Principles: Searching For Equity In A Two-Tiered Solution To Underrepresentation, Keith Howard, Douglas D. Havard Jan 2019

Advanced Placement (Ap) Computer Science Principles: Searching For Equity In A Two-Tiered Solution To Underrepresentation, Keith Howard, Douglas D. Havard

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between students’ participation in the two high school AP computer science exam options and their selected fields of study once they enter post-secondary education. Two studies using national public-use datasets of participation and performance were conducted. Study 1 compared score distributions for the traditional Computer Science A exam to those of the newer Computer Science Principles exam during its first two years of implementation. In Study 1, Chi-square analyses revealed large differences in performance between the two exams, with the Computer Science Principles scores clustering more around marginal pass rates. …

Unintended Policy Practices : A Review Of Student Affairs Supervisory Practices Based On Work-Study Status Within The State University Of New York System, Jessica Krupski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the potential differences between how work-study and non-work-study student employees are trained, professionally developed, and evaluated in Student Affairs departments within the State University of New York System during the spring of 2019. The significance and contribution of this study is in the fact that there is not a statistically significant difference between the supervisory practices based on work-study status, yet, the data shows how the field can make improvements on the student employee experience as a whole, regardless of student employee type.

Undergraduate Engineering Students' Agency In Professional Socialization : Evidence From A Capstone Design Lab, Michelle Mora Jan 2019

Undergraduate Engineering Students' Agency In Professional Socialization : Evidence From A Capstone Design Lab, Michelle Mora

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Two national priorities were instrumental in this study of an undergraduate engineering program: (1) Higher education’s roles and responsibilities for the preparation of a workforce competent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and (2) Accountability-related questions regarding the value-added effects of professional education programs on aspiring STEM students. A recent report suggests that policy makers and the public do not know whether current initiatives are accomplishing their goals and leading to nationwide improvements in undergraduate STEM education (Committee on Developing Indicators for Undergraduate STEM Education et al., 2018). One reason is that national, state, and institutional undergraduate data systems often …

Understanding Hazing Perceptions Of Students And Administrators Using A Four Frame Approach, Emily Feuer Jan 2019

Understanding Hazing Perceptions Of Students And Administrators Using A Four Frame Approach, Emily Feuer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Hazing poses a health and safety risk to many students and campuses in the United States, including students involved in fraternities/sororities. To combat hazing, college campuses have put structures and policies in place in an attempt to better govern, control, or reduce fraternity/sorority activities, but hazing incidents continue to persist. This study examines how students affiliated with fraternities/sororities and administrators who work with these students frame hazing behavior with the intention of creating a foundation for interventions based on common findings and potential gaps in frame utilization.

The Impact Of Principal Leadership On Teacher Perception Of The Annual Professional Performance Review (Appr), Barry Alexander Finsel Jan 2019

The Impact Of Principal Leadership On Teacher Perception Of The Annual Professional Performance Review (Appr), Barry Alexander Finsel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Teacher quality is the most important school-based factor affecting student learning and achievement. In 2009, the Race to the Top (RttT) federal education initiative provided an opportunity for states to compete for federal grant resources to reform their public education systems, which included revamping teacher evaluation systems to improve teacher (and principal) effectiveness. Consequently, New York State was awarded almost $700 million in 2010 during the second phase of RttT for its Regents Education Reform Plan, which established a new teacher and principal evaluation plan known as the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR). Under its first version (§3012-c), APPR used …

The Spiritual Formation Of Recent College Graduates And Residence Life Influences Attributed To The Spiritual Formation, Natalie Jorde Jan 2019

The Spiritual Formation Of Recent College Graduates And Residence Life Influences Attributed To The Spiritual Formation, Natalie Jorde

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This study investigated the spiritual formation experience of alumni from a Midwest Christian college six months to five years after graduation and the spiritual formation factors they attribute to their Residence Life experience. The data revealed that alumni persist in their Christian faith, and seek growth in Christian beliefs, attitudes, and experiences. Findings regarding Residence Life were consistent with the literature, revealing that the most significant source of spiritual formation for alumni are peer relationships, interactions, and conversations. Programming was not a significant factor in a student’s spiritual formation. This study led to several recommendations for application including a re-orienting …

Impact Of A Student Leadership Experience On The Development Of Creativity In Undergraduate Students, Austin Smith

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a leadership experience on the development of creativity in undergraduate students in order to help student affairs professionals, faculty, and administrators better understand how they can develop creativity in their students. A phenomenological study was conducted on students who held a leadership position as a Resident Assistant or cabinet member of a student organization on the campus of a small institution in the Midwestern United States. The study consisted of an open-ended survey and semistructured interviews. Key findings from this study include insight into various aspects of students’ experiences …

The Rise And Impact Of Premarital Cohabitation: Implications For Christian Higher Education, Heidi Morris, Suzie Macaluso, Prentice Ashford Jan 2019

The Rise And Impact Of Premarital Cohabitation: Implications For Christian Higher Education, Heidi Morris, Suzie Macaluso, Prentice Ashford

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Premarital cohabitation is an increasingly common aspect of relationships today. Despite Christian theology that often frowns on cohabitation, modern students entering institutions of Christian higher education are influenced by this societal trend. For some students, cohabitation does not carry the negative connotation as in previous years. However, how aware are students of the implications of cohabitation on relationship satisfaction? This study examines whether the level of satisfaction within a relationship is affected by having lived in a cohabiting relationship before marriage. Through an analysis of U.S. data from the 2010 Married and Cohabiting Couples survey, levels of relationship satisfaction were …

A Pivotal Point In Identity Development: The Impact Of The Resident Assistant Experience, Levi C. Huffman, Erin M. Lefdahl-Davis Jan 2019

A Pivotal Point In Identity Development: The Impact Of The Resident Assistant Experience, Levi C. Huffman, Erin M. Lefdahl-Davis

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Does serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) in college impact students’ identity and long-term leadership skills? This article details a grounded theory qualitative research study where alumni are interviewed about their RA experience five to ten years post-graduation. The study revealed that a profound change (labelled a pivotal point) occurred in participants’ lives while they were serving as RAs. These former student leaders unanimously identified the role as important to their overall identity development and leadership skills. Even though the RA experience often caused a significant disruption in self-perception, it was also a catalyst for significant change in areas such …

The Missing Image-Bearers At College: The Inclusion Of People With Intellectual Disabilities On The Christian University Campus, Emmy Edwards Jan 2019

The Missing Image-Bearers At College: The Inclusion Of People With Intellectual Disabilities On The Christian University Campus, Emmy Edwards

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Since the passage of the Higher Education Opportunities Act of 2008, higher education has expanded and improved access for individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, Christian colleges and universities have fallen behind in terms of creating innovative and spiritually formative programs for people with intellectual disabilities. Through the exploration of a literature review, a theological framework, and the description of three Christian programs that currently exist, this paper argues for the good of the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities on the Christian college campus as fellow image-bearers. Additionally it contends that the Christian university has a unique position of to …

Professors Of Higher Education/Student Affairs And The Scholarship Of Practice, Drew Moser, Kate Austin Jan 2019

Professors Of Higher Education/Student Affairs And The Scholarship Of Practice, Drew Moser, Kate Austin

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

For professors of higher education/student affairs, the primary object of inquiry is the university. Yet lore of the divide among faculty and administration looms large over the academy, ranging from perceived dissonance to overt hostility (Bess and Dee, 2014; McMillian and Berberet, 2002; Rice, 1996). With the multitude of issues emerging in the present landscape of higher education, it is worth exploring the real extent of this divide. This article explores the question: Do scholars of higher education/student affairs have or take the opportunity to translate their technical, disciplinary skill into practical assistance to the benefit of their respective institutions? …

The Demonstrable Value Of Honors Education: New Research Evidence, Andrew J. Cognard-Black, Jerry Herron, Patricia J. Smith Jan 2019

The Demonstrable Value Of Honors Education: New Research Evidence, Andrew J. Cognard-Black, Jerry Herron, Patricia J. Smith

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

“We all know—instinctively, experientially—that what we as honors teachers and administrators do for our students adds value to their college education and general college experience. Providing hard, demonstrable evidence for that which we know in our bodies as it were . . . turns out not to be so easy, a fact anyone who has had to make the case for additional, or even simply continued, honors funding to a new dean or college president has likely encountered. The results presented in this volume provide, in a diversity of ways via a diversity of research approaches, the sorts of evidence …

High-Impact Honors Practices: Success Outcomes Among Honors And Comparable High-Achieving Non-Honors Students At Eastern Kentucky University, Katie Patton, David Coleman, Lisa W. Kay Jan 2019

High-Impact Honors Practices: Success Outcomes Among Honors And Comparable High-Achieving Non-Honors Students At Eastern Kentucky University, Katie Patton, David Coleman, Lisa W. Kay

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Alexander Astin’s Inputs-Environment-Outcomes (I-E-O) model for longitudinal study of student success in higher education challenges researchers to account explicitly for the wide range of educational, social, and cultural backgrounds that students bring with them to college. Astin’s approach factors in an understanding that educational outcomes are associated not only with the various educational environments to which students are exposed during their college years, but also with the inputs of these students—the factors that shaped them long before they first arrived in a university classroom. Meaningful conclusions concerning factors that contribute to student success must take into account the complex interactions …

Gpa As A Product, Not A Measure, Of Success In Honors, Lorelle A. Meadows, Maura Hollister, Mary Raber, Laura Kasson Fiss Jan 2019

Gpa As A Product, Not A Measure, Of Success In Honors, Lorelle A. Meadows, Maura Hollister, Mary Raber, Laura Kasson Fiss

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Defining success is challenging. Yet schools and colleges across the country, indeed, around the world, seek to do it in order to demonstrate value. While we know that success depends upon a variety of skills that individuals develop into competencies, these can be difficult to measure in an academic setting. For example, as educators, we hope that success is an outcome of lifelong learning, but the measurement of lifelong learning requires sophisticated approaches that can be difficult to deploy across a broad population (Riley and Claris 2008). As a result, administrators and instructors will often gravitate toward more readily available …

Compass Placement Assessment And Student Attrition At A Community College, Leslie Morris Samuel Griffiths Ii Jan 2019

Compass Placement Assessment And Student Attrition At A Community College, Leslie Morris Samuel Griffiths Ii

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Considerable research has been conducted regarding the usefulness of placement testing in community colleges. Many stuides show that using the COMPASS exam may lead to students' unsuccessful course completion. To better identify the factors that may result in reduced attrition, the relationship between attrition and placement testing was studied. Using Tinto's student retention model and employing qualitative methodology, this study explored the perceptions of students and faculty regarding whether COMPASS placement assessment predicted future student success in first year courses at a community college that reports higher rates of attrition when compared to other area community colleges. After completing interviews …

Teacher Perceptions Of Math Professional Development In A Small Vocational School, Nisha Woody

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract The vocational math teachers at a vocational secondary school lack the adequate skills needed to be effective in math classrooms. The vocational teachers who teach math at the local vocational school have been identified as noncertified teachers based on their certification with the state department of education. The purpose of this project study was to determine the best professional development sessions needed to improve the instructional practice of untrained math teachers at the school. Their work is critical to the academic and career development of students. The social development theory of Vygotsky, which states that social interaction has an …

Academic Accountability Between Charter And Public-School Principals In New Jersey, Nicole Goodman Jan 2019

Academic Accountability Between Charter And Public-School Principals In New Jersey, Nicole Goodman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this study was to explore school principals' accountability with student academic performance. Charter and public-school principals are responsible for the learning process and academic development. Previously published literature did not reveal a clear understanding of the policies and practices that contributed in obtaining the desired student academic outcomes. Parsons's theory of action served as the foundation for analyzing principals' decisions to achieve accountability and comply with the policies established by the regulating authorities. A snowball sampling of school principals included a public charter school principal and 5 traditional public-school principals in the state of New Jersey. A …

Impact Of Lesson Study On Teachers’ Beliefs, Professional Knowledge, Collaboration, And Instructional Planning, Megan Houtchens Jan 2019

Impact Of Lesson Study On Teachers’ Beliefs, Professional Knowledge, Collaboration, And Instructional Planning, Megan Houtchens

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies: Doctoral Research Projects

The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to create a lesson study framework that content and grade level teams of teachers can use to develop and implement their own professional learning connected to student learning goals over the course of a school year. The knowledge claim (McNiff, 2017) for this study is lesson study will result in changes in teachers’ knowledge and beliefs about their content, pedagogy and student learning, in teachers’ collaborative capacity, and in the teaching and learning resources that are used to support student thinking (Lewis et al., 2009). Three teams of content specific teachers …

Theorizing The Experiences Of Chicana Faculty At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Karina Chantal Canaba Jan 2019

Theorizing The Experiences Of Chicana Faculty At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Karina Chantal Canaba

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Hiring and retaining a diverse faculty has demonstrated to have positive outcomes on student success. However, different forces have made it difficult for universities to have a diverse make-up that reflect their student populations, making it particularly important to investigate how faculty engage with the university. This study seeks to better understand how Chicana faculty engage with the university through the tenure and promotion process. Situated in a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), this study looks to better understand how Chicana faculty navigate the complex, political environment of academia through their testimonios as faculty at the university.

The importance of retaining Chicanas …

Using Spanish In English-Language Spaces: Identifying Bilingual Composition Students' Translanguaging Practices, Maria Isela Maier Jan 2019

Using Spanish In English-Language Spaces: Identifying Bilingual Composition Students' Translanguaging Practices, Maria Isela Maier

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation is a qualitative study that uses ethnographic research methods to examine the translanguaging practices of bilingual students in first-year composition at a university along the U.S.-Mexico border. Specifically, I observe how and why bilingual students employ translanguaging practices, as they are encouraged or invited by their instructors, in contexts where English Standard Language policies exist. The results of this qualitative project demonstrate bilingual students' use of translation as part of their translanguaging practices, as well as a tool that uncovers students' writing processes which also demonstrates their language negotiation. Furthermore, the students' translanguaging practices reveal the rhetorical use …
