Quality Of Performance And Change-Sensitive Assessment Of Cognitive Ability, Gale H. Roid
2004 - The International Test Users' Conference
Growth and change are fundamental processes in human development. Recent trends in education, psychology, medicine, and other fields have stimulated renewed interest in methods of measuring developmental growth and change (Collins & Sayer 2001). Educators and governmental agencies have recently placed greater emphasis on the importance of growth in reading as foundational to student learning (Torgesen 2002).A major review of the regulations is underway in the United States, concerning funding of special education in public schools (e.g., President’s Commission on Excellence in Special Education 2002) and the emphasis has been on ‘continuous progress’ assessment and accountability for student learning (e.g., …

This workshop presents instruments for assessing behavioural, emotional, and social problems and adaptive functioning. Developmentally appropriate instruments are designed for assessing preschool children, school-age children, adolescents, adults between the ages of 18 and 59, and adults over the age of 59.To obtain multiple perspectives, selfreport forms are completed by the person who is being assessed and parallel forms are completed by people who know the person being assessed. The informants include parents, teachers, spouses, partners, caregivers, friends, and grown children of the person being assessed. ASEBA software systematically compares problems reported by each respondent. The systematic comparisons reveal similarities among and …

By Chance Or By Choice, Marilyn L. Grady, Barbara Lacost
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
May 17, 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Linda Brown (1943- ), a Topeka, Kansas third grader, is the symbol of "bringing down segregation" in U.S. schools. Rosa Parks (1913- ), "the mother of the Civil Rights Movement," refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus on December 1, 1955. Coretta Scott King (1927- ) has created the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change as a living memorial to her husband's life and dream. In January 1986, because of her efforts, she celebrated the first legal holiday …

Women School Superintendents: Perceptions Of Best Practices For Leadership, Susan Katz
Women School Superintendents: Perceptions Of Best Practices For Leadership, Susan Katz
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
In U.S. public schools, a limited number of women have attained the position of superintendent. Consequently, there has been limited research focusing on understanding the position from a woman's perspective. The purpose of this study was to add to the body of literature focusing on women's ideas and beliefs about leading schools.

Power Factors That Define Gender Inequity Within The Missouri Public School Superintendency, Kristina Alexander, Frank D. Grispino, Phillip E. Messner
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Although women have access to the superintendency power position, evidence has shown that women have not been able to break the glass ceiling. A review of the literature failed to identify specific and practical employment factors that must be resolved or overcome if women are to reach power parity in Missouri. This study was undertaken to identify those variables that best define negotiating and access power barriers for Missouri women superintendents.

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Although many aspiring, young women might believe the glass ceiling was shattered a decade ago, they still need to understand how that glass ceiling impacted an older generation of women in educational leadership. they also must be aware that some segments of the glass ceiling might still exist. This article provides a historical overview of the external barriers faced by women in educational leadership and presents mentoring recommendations to both generations.
Character Citizenship, Donald F. Uerling
Character Citizenship, Donald F. Uerling
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The thesis of this article is that public schools have both the legal authority and the educational responsibility to provide schooling for character and citizenship. We will begin with a review of constitutional principles expressed in selected Supreme Court cases; we will end with some observations about such schooling from an educational perspective.

The major purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which career centers in Massachusetts are providing mature workers with access to federally funded training. The research is based on two large administrative data sources: The MOSES database made available by the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training (now Division of Career Services and Division of Unemployment) and a customer service database maintained by The Career Place, a career center in Woburn, MA. The MOSES data file provided for this research includes data on user characteristics and service transactions for all career centers in Massachusetts from July 1, …

Distance Education Strategy: Mental Models And Strategic Choices, John C. Adams, Alan T. Seagren
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
What issues do distance education (DE) leaders believe will influence the future of DE? What are their colleges’ DE strategies? This qualitative study compares DE strategic thinking and strategic choices at three community colleges. Two propositions are investigated: (1) each college’s DE leaders use common strategic mental models (ways of thinking about key environmental issues and relationships), and (2) DE leaders from the three colleges employ common industry-level strategic mental models. The major findings are: (1) strategic beliefs are more varied than expected; (2) strategic choices address common DE issues but are tailored to local contexts; and (3) leaders’ beliefs …

The Relationship Between Administrators' Learning Patterns And Leadership Competencies, Mark Hendricks
The Relationship Between Administrators' Learning Patterns And Leadership Competencies, Mark Hendricks
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between selected administrators' learning patterns and attendant leadership competencies. Thirty-nine upper-level administrators at Rowan University completed the Leadership Assessment Instrument and Learning Combination Inventory to evaluate this relationship. Results showed a statistically significant relationship between a confluent learning pattern and conceptual thinking leadership components. Administrators demonstrated a wide variability in leadership competencies and learning patterns on descriptive tests. Findings suggest administrators at Rowan University use a wide degree of flexibility between learning patterns and leadership skills.

Creating Time For Research At Marshall University, Deanna Mader, Chong W. Kim
Creating Time For Research At Marshall University, Deanna Mader, Chong W. Kim
Management Faculty Research
Creating time for research is important, yet difficult. Creating large blocks of dedicated research time is nearly impossible. It is critical, therefore, that the institution encourages all levels to work in a coordinated effort to assist faculty in accessing those precious minutes and smaller blocks of time. At the departmental level the Management and Marketing Division conducts a Research and Teaching (R&T) Forum six to eight times per academic year. The forum allows the division’s 28 faculty members to brainstorm, find areas of similar interests, combine research efforts, and present a “test run” before submission to a journal or conference. …
