Effective Learning Practices For Rural And First Generation College Students, Maureen Kraus Gildein

This study examined the use and perceived effectiveness of instructional strategies among college students, with attention to differences based on GPA, class year, gender, and first-generation status. Four families of strategies—Information Processing, Personal, Behavioral, and Social/Family—were evaluated to understand how students engage with and benefit from various learning approaches. Findings indicate that students employ a multi-faceted set of strategies across all domains, with moderate to high levels of use and effectiveness. Information Processing strategies, particularly logically organized content, were reported as most frequently used and highly effective. Personal and Behavioral strategies, including self-monitoring, goalsetting, and active engagement, were widely applied …

Accrediting bodies, such as the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), are increasingly focused on how teacher preparation programs integrate technology. As part of the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) teacher candidates demonstrate essential classroom skills through submission of teaching videos, lesson plans, and reflections. This study examined which of these three document types provides the strongest evidence of technology use among teacher candidates. Using a technology integration model, the Technology Integration Matrix (TIM), this study quantitatively assessed the levels of technology integration and characteristics of the learning environment visible in a stratified random sample of 150 submitted documents. …

This qualitative study demonstrated the benefits of Career and Technical Education (CTE) over the traditional educational system and identified key components necessary to implement CTE programs in smaller-sized secondary schools, like those found in the Long Island Region of New York. Although an abundance of research existed on the benefits of CTE, these studies focused on programs in large school districts with high student enrollment and, most often, multiple high schools. Gender disparities in literacy persist across the globe, shaping academic and career opportunities in profound ways. Despite advances in educational research and interventions, boys continue to trail their female counterparts in literacy from an early age, and this gap persists. The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in students’ self-perception, academic practice in literacy-based tasks, and enjoyment of these activities. This dissertation explores the need for and potential benefits of utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy and a culturally relevant curriculum in a homogenous – predominantly White – classroom environment. It further addresses how teachers might utilize a critical framework to interrogate and inform instructional practices. The study employs Apple’s Nine Tasks for the Critical Scholar (2012) as a critical lens for education practices and policies and the Transformative Autoethnography Model (2022) as a tool for both data collection and analysis. By incorporating community-building circles into the regular classroom routine, educators can positively impact various aspects of students’ experiences in school. In this phenomenological qualitative study, I explored how school-building leaders’ perspectives, experiences, and knowledge impact the implementation and sustainability of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in Northeastern U.S. schools. I conducted semistructured interviews with 10 elementary- and middle-school-building leaders to gain insights into their lived experiences and leadership practices related to SEL. Grounded in distributed-leadership theory (DLT), which emphasizes shared leadership, study results showed that all participants viewed SEL as essential to students’ well-being and academic success. However, leaders reported inconsistent implementation across classrooms and schools, accompanied by limited district support. Although schools promoted SEL in theory, participants noted a lack …

COVID-19 closed colleges and forced faculty and students to learn a new way of teaching and learning. Like most institutions, Marshall University’s College of Education and Professional Development struggled to provide the practicum experience required for teacher preparation when most public schools shifted to remote learning. This qualitative study investigated the reactions of, and ongoing impact on, a university’s college of education’s administrators, faculty, undergraduates, the institution’s instructional designers, and the Counseling Center’s director when the campus closed spring of 2020 due to the pandemic. Frances Harper’s address at the 1866 National Woman’s Rights Convention was a visionary speech on civil rights, citizenship, and civic identity. In it, Harper skillfully negotiated the context of nineteenth-century reform politics while remaining true to her vision. The message of her speech was grounded in both her experience as a Black woman and her theological convictions. A close reading of the speech shows that key elements—including its signature line—have been misunderstood and unappreciated.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether industry-recognized credentials (IRCs) earned in secondary school led to quality employment and which IRCs should be integrated into career and technical education (CTE) high school courses. Using survey data from business leaders across the 14 nationally recognized Career Clusters (Advance CTE, 2024a), credentials were ranked by importance within five program areas (n = 257). Pareto analysis revealed 80% of respondents rated health sciences, family and consumer sciences, and agricultural sciences credentials highest, while business/marketing and skilled/technical sciences/STEM credentials did not rank in the top 20%. Resilience, as a multidimensional psychological construct, may vary with respect to personal characteristics such as gender and social context like socio-economic status, particularly in the Indian context. We describe a one-color, two-photon polarization spectroscopy experiment on the 5S 1/2-5D5/2 transition in rubidium, suitable for implementation in an advanced undergraduate instructional laboratory. The proposed laboratory module synergistically combines polarization spectroscopy with established fluorescence detection at a wavelength different from the excitation wavelength. The curriculum provided in this paper allows students to compare experimental results with predicted theoretical lineshapes and to study the intensity dependence of the two-photon transition. The module also provides a springboard that enables instructors to expand the curriculum to incorporate additional measurements and theoretical analyses.
