Using Art To Understand Children's Perceptions Of Covid-Era Schooling, Katrina Bartow Jacobs, Kali Stull

This study explores how elementary-aged children (K–5) made sense of their Covid-era schooling experiences at Falk Laboratory School. Using an arts-based methodology combining drawing and narrative reflection, researchers collected 232 student artworks and 225 narratives. Findings revealed that older children referenced Covid-related experiences more frequently than younger children, that Covid held similar emotional significance to other school experiences, and that children's responses included both positive and negative emotions. A notable subset of students, particularly some neurodiverse learners, expressed positive feelings about remote learning, smaller groups, and masking. This case study examines the Global Leadership Laboratory (GLL), a yearlong high school leadership course at University Laboratory School in Hawaiʻi. The curriculum integrates transformative learning and contemplative practices to promote student voice, self-awareness, leadership skills, and personal agency. Through interviews, observations, and student artifacts, the study found that reflective journaling, dialogue, contemplative practices, and transformative learning activities supported the development of authentic student voice and perspective transformation, although outcomes varied by classroom conditions and student readiness.

Students’ Conceptions Of The Future: Participatory Co-Research And Teaching Experiment, Anna Veijola, Tuukka Tomperi

This study examines upper secondary students’ conceptions of the future through a participatory teaching and research experiment conducted in a philosophy course at the University of Jyväskylä Teacher Training School. Students collaboratively created short films imagining the world in 2043 and wrote reflective essays about the ethical and philosophical issues represented in their films. Using the framework of Futures Consciousness, the researchers analyzed themes related to time perspective, agency, openness to alternatives, systems thinking, and concern for others. Findings revealed that students expressed both utopian and dystopian visions rooted in contemporary global concerns such as climate change, inequality, technological development, …

Objective:

To determine whether dietetic students would report a change in their public service motivation (PSM) following a community nutrition service learning (SL) course, and whether the SL model (charity v. project) influences this change differently.

Design:

Using a pretest–posttest, nonequivalent groups quasi-experimental design, this study compared students’ PSM at the beginning and end of a 15-week college-level course. PSM and four component dimensions (attraction to public policy, commitment to public interest, compassion and self-sacrifice) were measured via electronic survey using the PSM scale. This poster will demonstrate a unique series of interactive lessons, designed and implemented collaboratively by Social Work and Library faculty to support student information literacy skill development. This series of six lessons was implemented with junior-level social work students and focused on topics such as determining quality of sources, constructing citations, identifying research methodology, utilizing technology, research ethics and search techniques. Lesson outlines will be made available to participants and future research and evaluation plans will be discussed.

The main purpose of this paper is to characterize the log-logistic (LL) distributions through the methods of percentiles and L-moments and contrast with the method of (product) moments. The method of (product) moments (MoM) has certain limitations when compared with method of percentiles (MoP) and method of L-moments (MoLM) in the context of fitting empirical and theoretical distributions and estimation of parameters, especially when distributions with greater departure from normality are involved. Power method (PM) polynomials have been used for simulating non-normal distributions in a variety of settings such as toxicology research, price risk, business-cycle features, microarray analysis, computer adaptive testing, and structural equation modeling. A majority of these applications are based on the method of matching product moments (e.g., skew and kurtosis). However, estimators of skew and kurtosis can be (a) substantially biased, (b) highly dispersed, or (c) influenced by outliers. The main purpose of this quantitative study was to compare graduate education students from 1988 with graduate and undergraduate education students from 2014 in regard to their attitudes and expectations about teaching, schools, and students. The sample of participants for this study was chosen from a large public research university in North Texas and it was comprised of 50 graduate education students from 1988, 119 undergraduate and 147 graduate education students from 2014.The 2014 graduate education students were found to be significantly more negative and to have significantly lower expectations than either the graduate education students of 1988 or the …

In advanced Chinese learning, newspaper reading and news video watching are considered quite challenging for Chinese language learners for their formal style, large and time-sensitive vocabulary, and limited exposure through traditional ways of learning/teaching. To distinguish the similarities and differences in coping strategies of African American engineering students, a quantitative study was conducted which examined their perceptions of stereotype threat at three academic institution types: predominantly White institutions, ethnically diverse, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The researcher collected demographic information as well as survey data using the Stereotype Vulnerability Scale (SVS). Results were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s correlational statistical analyses. Findings revealed that no statistical differences exist between students’ scores on an assessment of stereotype vulnerability at the three university types, nor did the percentage of African American students …

This research uses a mixed methods approach in focusing upon the role service-learning can play in enhancing preservice teachers’ sense of efficacy. Results of the quantitative component reveal significant gains in efficacy beliefs of preservice teachers who engaged in a service-learning project during a course in their teacher preparation. At the completion of a service-learning project, preservice teachers shared their perceptions of their participation through written reflections. Qualitative analysis of the preservice teachers’ written reflections and the characteristics of the service-learning experience uncover sources of efficacy, providing guidance for planning service-learning in teacher education. The purpose was to use a multi-level statistical technique to analyze how children's age, motor proficiency, and cognitive styles interact to affect accuracy on reach estimation tasks via Motor Imagery and Visual Imagery. Results from the Generalized Linear Mixed Model analysis (GLMM) indicated that only the 7-year-old age group had significant random intercepts for both tasks. Motor proficiency predicted accuracy in reach tasks, and cognitive styles (object scale) predicted accuracy in the motor imagery task. GLMM analysis is suitable to explore age and other parameters of development. In this case, it allowed an assessment of motor proficiency interacting with age …
