Helping Students Understand The Complexity Of Ecological And Environmental Issues Through Use And Creation Of Environmental Impact Statements, Jessica Amacher, Desirae Klimek
Helping Students Understand The Complexity Of Ecological And Environmental Issues Through Use And Creation Of Environmental Impact Statements, Jessica Amacher, Desirae Klimek
Professional Learning Day
When discussing environmental issues, threats to ecosystems, and potential solutions, students tend toward a simplified view of these issues and how to fix them. To enrich their understanding of the complexities of these problems and the potential for real-life solutions, we developed a unit in which students create Environmental Impact Statements. This framework encourages students to consider the diverse perspectives of stakeholders in a specific ecosystem and to propose feasible and effective solutions.

The participants’ lived experiences was gathered through individual interviews, a focus group session, and follow-up personal interviews. The study utilized the interpretive framework of the constructivist worldview, where the researcher used bracketing, an initial data analysis, coding, and themes, finalized by …
Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar
Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar
Journal of Graduate Education Research
Heritage language learners are a heterogenous group themselves, and prevalent contrasts exist between them and foreign language learners. This presents challenges for the amalgamation of heritage language learners and foreign language learners within a single language classroom. Reviewing relevant literature, this paper discusses the differences between heritage language learners and foreign language learners, and how these can be accounted for by educators. It argues that, without specific, individualised differentiation, the foreign language classroom is inappropriate for the heritage language learner due to its inability to sufficiently account for their heterogeneity, diverse backgrounds and unique motivations for language learning. The difficulty …

Understanding Young Adolescent Identity And Experiences Through Internal Dimensions: A Scoping Review, Dezeré J. Martin, Stacie K. Pettit, Sandra L. Stacki, Kristie W. Smith, Micki M. Caskey
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this study was to explore multiple facets of young adolescent identity and related experiences through a scoping literature review. Based on Gardenswartz and Rowe’s Four Layers of Diversity Model, we specifically examined extant literature around five of the internal dimensions: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and physical ability. Two overarching research questions guided this investigation: What is the range and nature of current findings on young adolescent identity and experience? What gaps exist in research on young adolescent identity and experiences? To address these research questions, our research group conducted a scoping literature review using predetermined search strings …
Introducing A Non-Zero Post-Humanistic Framework For Problem Solving In Design Education, Louise Kolff, Robert Haubt
Introducing A Non-Zero Post-Humanistic Framework For Problem Solving In Design Education, Louise Kolff, Robert Haubt
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This paper proposes an innovative framework within interdisciplinary higher education courses that integrates non-zero post-humanistic design thinking and the concept of embodiment for addressing problem solving. We explore how design education can move from a human-centered approach, to a post-humanistic more-than-human approach. Central to our approach is "non- zero" thinking, emphasising collaborative solutions that benefit all stakeholders—human and non- human—recognising our shared responsibilities within ecosystems. We also introduce the notion of qualia in design education, highlighting how immersive experiences can evoke deeper emotional responses, fostering empathy and a greater understanding of complex problems. This combined approach achieves three key outcomes …

Training For Tomorrow: Ensuring School Staff Are Ready For Medical Emergencies, Lisa Garamella
Training For Tomorrow: Ensuring School Staff Are Ready For Medical Emergencies, Lisa Garamella
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
This project explores the implementation of a training curriculum for emergency response team (ERT) members in schools. Using a pre-and post-test questionnaire to assess knowledge aims to increase the understanding of identifying emergencies and responding to school personnel. Emergencies can happen at any time or place. School districts need to ensure they are prepared to respond appropriately to help during these situations. Having a plan in place to manage medical emergencies will help lessen the impact of a medical event (Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA], 2010). Most school staff are not thoroughly trained to assist students, staff, or visitors during …
