Leading And Learning From Inside Out: Insights From Meditative Inquiry, Jody L. Rebek
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This article explores our modern world and our role in shaping collective experiences. By our thoughts, choices and behaviours (our character), we influence our shared reality. Higher education has an imperative responsibility to engage students ethically and develop their character. I offer a teaching metaphor and case study to meaningfully develop students’ self-awareness of character via an undergraduate leadership course. I employed the ‘seed’ metaphor to illustrate how nurturing students’ self-awareness and agency mirrors the growth of a seed within a carefully cultivated ecosystem. Each contemplative practice (character development) intertwined with leadership content (competence and confidence), serves as essential nourishment, …

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This research investigated the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students on their experiences with group work (GW) in both online and offline environments. The results indicated that most students who participated in GW in both settings held a positive perception. Implementing a Collaborative Learning (CL) approach can enhance students’ self-confidence, motivation, engagement in a studentcentered environment, and sense of responsibility. However, some students reported negative experiences with online GW due to issues such as unstable internet connections, limited prior experience with GW, and unfamiliarity with relevant applications and software. Consequently, the findings of this study offer valuable …

Assessing University Students’ Self-Reported Vocabulary Learning Strategy Use, Yirgalem Girma
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
Learning vocabulary is certainly a vital component of language learning and without this integral component of language communication becomes hardly meaningful. Thus, students are expected to have rich vocabulary power that enables them to communicate successfully via listening, speaking, reading, and writing; it assists students in expressing a range of meanings in various communicative situations for various purposes. This demands students to learn vocabulary using diverse vocabulary learning strategies that assist them in learning (internalizing, storing, recalling, and using) words properly. However, several students barely manage vocabulary learning tasks and/or use appropriate and diverse vocabulary in English classes. Consequently, this …

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Virtual whiteboards like Google Jamboard became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This G.I.F.T.S. paper will demonstrate how I used Google Jamboard in my classes. Virtual whiteboards help students understand what they are learning and promote student participation and engagement in class. Virtual whiteboards are especially useful in the instruction of communication theories. I included in this paper how I taught schema theory using Jamboard. A brief survey was conducted the first time Jamboard was introduced in a course. A total of 60 students filled out the survey. More than 80 percent of the students indicated that they liked the platform, …

Evaluating Current Practices In Operative Nontechnical Skills Training And Feedback In General Surgery Residency: A Mixed Methods Approach, Madeline Cloonan
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Non-technical skills (NTS) are the interpersonal and cognitive abilities that are critical to accomplishing high-risk tasks. Deficiencies in NTS, including communication, teamwork, leadership, and decision-making, are linked to errors in the operating room. Structured training and feedback in NTS remain inconsistent and have not been integrated into daily training. This dissertation addresses this gap by evaluating current NTS training and feedback practices and developing a rubric to enhance the effectiveness of NTS feedback.
Methods: We conducted five complementary studies to assess current NTS training and feedback. The first was a systematic review aimed at identifying intraoperative NTS training interventions …
