Creating A Culture Of Engagement In Business Schools, Devin Lunt, Larry Chonko, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley Jul 2018

Creating A Culture Of Engagement In Business Schools, Devin Lunt, Larry Chonko, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley

Organization Management Journal

Business schools, in the face of various external pressures, are confronted with the daunting challenge of better engaging their constituents to achieve their learning mission. We call for engagement to play a unifying role in a business school’s culture. We incorporate relevant learning, marketing and change management concepts to first present conceptual tenets underlying our engagement model including co-creation of learning and students as works-in-progress. We then propose a plan for creating a culture of engagement in business schools to advance their learning mission, which broadly involves students, faculty, alumni, employers and administrators. The tactical plan is presented in four …

Outcomes Assessment In A Capstone Management Course: Engaging Multiple Stakeholders, Melissa J. Knott, Jeanie M. Forray, Claire E. Regan

Organization Management Journal

In this article, we present a program assurance of learning method (“RealTest”) that engages multiple stakeholders in a one-day assessment center (AC) design integrated into our management majors’ capstone course. In addition to involving graduating seniors, department faculty, and College of Business administrators, the day-long process engages individuals from the local business community and alumni who serve as assessors (“coaches”) for the activities included. During the RealTest experience, we collect data for use in our program review’s process for continuous improvement of the curriculum and provide career networking opportunities for the participants. We share data from several years’ worth of …

Mending The Gaps: An Exercise In Identifying And Understanding Diverse And Multicultural Team Faultlines, Susan D. Baker, Samina M. Saifuddin, Susan Stites-Doe

Organization Management Journal

The Faultlines Exercise, an experiential activity, introduces students to concepts of diversity attributes (surface and deep levels), social identity, and team faultlines. Through individual reflection and team discussion, students apply these concepts to their own diverse multicultural class teams with the goals of (a) preventing negative outcomes that may develop from faultlines and (b) improving team performance. Plenary class discussions reinforce key learning points that can be applied to teamwork throughout the course. Students in both face-to-face and online classes report that the exercise helps improve team performance and helps to identify and resolve problems. Instructions for facilitating classroom discussion …

Leading In The Real World: Operationalizing A Power-Based Model Of Collaboration For Leadership Experiential Learning, Mariana J. Lebron, Filiz Tabak Jul 2018

Leading In The Real World: Operationalizing A Power-Based Model Of Collaboration For Leadership Experiential Learning, Mariana J. Lebron, Filiz Tabak

Organization Management Journal

Using a power-based conceptual framework, we present a collaboration model to guide faculty and student affairs (SA) staff in working together to develop experiential learning assignments that help students apply leadership concepts to on-campus organizational problems. The PowerBased Student-Centered Collaboration Model (PSCM) consists of four stages through which faculty, SA staff, leadership course students, and student organization leaders operationalize their legitimate, coercive, expert, reward, and informational power in sharing resources for mutually beneficial student-centered learning experiences. Power structures provide coordinating mechanisms for information-exchange, decision-making, and role clarification in team-based collaborations. Using the PSCM, we developed a 6-week assignment Leading in …

A Study On The Direct And Moderating Effects Of Leader Facilitated Workplace Learning And Leader-Member Exchange On Employee Engagement, Candi S. Mcelheny Jul 2018

A Study On The Direct And Moderating Effects Of Leader Facilitated Workplace Learning And Leader-Member Exchange On Employee Engagement, Candi S. Mcelheny

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Employee engagement (EE) is a problem across all industries and is especially troublesome in the nursing profession. However the existing literature, both within and outside nursing professional publications, does not offer explicit solutions for combatting the current EE dilemma. The primary purpose of this study was to test a researcher-developed causal model linking Leader Facilitated Workplace Learning (LFWL), Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), and EE. LFWL, a new construct, was proposed as an antecedent for LMX and EE. Furthermore, LFWL was posited to have a moderating effect on the LMX and EE relationship. The model was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). …

How Does Interpersonal Justice Affect Outside Directors’ Governance Behavior? A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Esther B. Del Brio, Rosa M. Hernandez-Maestro, Toru Yoshikawa Jul 2018

How Does Interpersonal Justice Affect Outside Directors’ Governance Behavior? A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Esther B. Del Brio, Rosa M. Hernandez-Maestro, Toru Yoshikawa

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

We examine the impact of interpersonal justice among outside directors on the board and between a director and the CEO regarding the director’s monitoring and resource provision behaviors in different cultural contexts. We argue that directors from individualistic countries are more influenced by CEO interpersonal justice while directors from collectivistic countries are more affected by the board interpersonal justice. Our main effect results indicate that interpersonal justice with board members is positively related to both monitoring and resource provision by a director, while CEO interpersonal justice is related only to resource provision. Our results also show different effects on the …

The Relationships Of Team Diversity, Social Capital And Ambidexterity, Hock Seng Ng Jul 2018

The Relationships Of Team Diversity, Social Capital And Ambidexterity, Hock Seng Ng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This study seeks to gain insights into the impact of team diversity on building ambidextrous teams, i.e., managing trade-offs of “exploiting the present” and “exploring the future.” Given the inconsistent findings of the effects of diversity on team outcomes to date, the effect (if any) will likely be mediated and/or moderated by contextual factors. Hence, in this study, I have examined team social capital to understand better its role in fostering the relationship between team diversity and team ambidexterity.

The results of this empirical study using 211 work teams (include 1,342 managers and employees) from two multi-national companies spanning fourteen …

The Effect Of Organizational Culture On Work-Life Balance, Elinor S. Groner Jul 2018

The Effect Of Organizational Culture On Work-Life Balance, Elinor S. Groner

Student Publications

This study evaluates the relationship between organizational culture and work-life balance. Organizations which have policies and benefits in place generally create a stronger work-life balance for employees, but if the employees do not take advantage of the policies, then the overall balance will decrease. The study tested the relationship between cultural leadership style and the effects on work-life balance of employees. With thorough evaluation of the four cultural leadership styles, organizations were ranked on a scale with employee work life balance, as well as leadership style. Through personal interviews, a survey, and observations, these variables were tested. For my study, …

Foreign Direct Investment, A Movement Toward Investors' Centricity, A Behavioral Perspective, Jimmy Wee Teck Tan Jul 2018

Foreign Direct Investment, A Movement Toward Investors' Centricity, A Behavioral Perspective, Jimmy Wee Teck Tan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation proposal studies the determinants of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in a frontier economy from the behavioral perspective of a manager. There are many determinants used in determining a Foreign Direct Investment. These determinants range from economic, social, institutional, technology, organization, and commercial down to cultural distance. The objective of this research is not to duplicate the methodologies of many quantitative research studies that have been conducted, in which many economists use quantitative analysis of several years of data to determine the many factors that correlate with levels of FDI. The behavioral aspect of a manager’s decision is noticeably …

The Predictive Power Of People's Intraindividual Variability Across Situations: Implementing Whole Trait Theory In Assessment, Filip Lievens, Jonas W. B. Lang, Filip De Fruyt, Myrjam Van De Vijver, Ronald Bledow Jul 2018

The Predictive Power Of People's Intraindividual Variability Across Situations: Implementing Whole Trait Theory In Assessment, Filip Lievens, Jonas W. B. Lang, Filip De Fruyt, Myrjam Van De Vijver, Ronald Bledow

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the last decade, there has been increased recognition that traits refer not only to between-person differences but also to meaningful within-person variability across situations (i.e., whole trait theory). So far, this broader more contemporary trait conceptualization has made few inroads into assessment practices. Therefore, this study focuses on the assessment and predictive power of people’s intraindividual variability across situations. In three studies (either in student or employee samples), both test-takers’ mean trait scores and the variability of their responses across multiple written job-related situations of a situational judgment test (SJT) were assessed. Results revealed that people’s intraindividual variability (a) …

Exploring Brand Symbolism Amongst 10 Year-Old Urban Pakistani Children, Saima Hussain, Amber Gul Rashid Jul 2018

Exploring Brand Symbolism Amongst 10 Year-Old Urban Pakistani Children, Saima Hussain, Amber Gul Rashid

Business Review

This research uses consumer culture theory and thematic analysis to study the phenomenon of brand symbolism and self-image in 10 year old Pakistani boys from the high socioeconomic class. Results reveal that 10-year-old Pakistani boys want to be seen as intelligent and mature. They start benchmarking themselves against an ideal self-image and also develop an understanding of symbolic consumption. Their sense of how different brands correlate with different age groups is well developed and their own consumption is moving in favor of brands and product categories that are patronized by adults.

The Effects Of Rating Source, Rating Target, And Job Position On Ratings Of Perceived Training Needs, Phillip Joseph Dillulio Jul 2018

The Effects Of Rating Source, Rating Target, And Job Position On Ratings Of Perceived Training Needs, Phillip Joseph Dillulio

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Organizational investments in employee training and development have steadily increased over the past decade, with a recent estimate of $160 billion dollars annually. An important component of any training program is the subsequent training needs assessment (TNA), which provides critical information regarding who and what needs trained. Unfortunately, TNA research is severely limited compared to other aspects of the training process. The primary aim of the current study was to examine two important variables that can potentially influence TNA ratings beyond an actual need for training, the source and target of TNA ratings. Based on the assumptions of attribution theory, …

Grateful Beneficiaries And Proud Benefactors: A Moderated Mediation Model Relating Supervisors' Gratitude Expression To Employees' Organizational Citizenship Behavior, William Peter Jimenez Jul 2018

Grateful Beneficiaries And Proud Benefactors: A Moderated Mediation Model Relating Supervisors' Gratitude Expression To Employees' Organizational Citizenship Behavior, William Peter Jimenez

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Few organizational researchers have considered examining gratitude or pride—much less both simultaneously. In the present study, two complementary emotion theories (i.e., affective events theory and broaden-and-build theory) are integrated in an examination of the prosocial consequences of supervisors’ gratitude expression, employees’ authentic and hubristic pride experiences, and employees’ narcissism in a large construction company in China. Results from the analyses of the moderated mediation model pathways indicated that most of the proposed relationships were nonsignificant. Supervisors’ gratitude expression predicted employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) but did not predict employees’ authentic or hubristic pride. Employees’ hubristic pride—but not authentic pride—predicted employees’ …

The Impact Of Executive Doctoral Programs On Management Practice, Morgan Bulger, Kalle Lyytinen, Paul Salipante Jun 2018

The Impact Of Executive Doctoral Programs On Management Practice, Morgan Bulger, Kalle Lyytinen, Paul Salipante

Engaged Management ReView

Although the prevalence of Executive Doctoral Programs (EDPs) is increasing, little is known about their influence on management practice. To support further research and debate into this important area, this essay presents a dynamic model of EDP impact and discusses how the model can help reorient current knowledge on practitioner–scholar behaviors and careers. The model identifies six dimensions of EDPs’ personal impact: 1) cognitive development, 2) academic contribution, 3) practical impact, 4) career mobility, 5) identity transformation, and 6) community belonging. In addition, it identifies eight activities that represent EDPs’ practical impact: 1) direct management application, 2) teaching or educational …

The Management Of Strategic Agility Policy: Reflections On The Exponential Style Of Leadership In Turbulent Times., Zeinab Shawky Younis Jun 2018

The Management Of Strategic Agility Policy: Reflections On The Exponential Style Of Leadership In Turbulent Times., Zeinab Shawky Younis

Business Administration

If strategy is the mean to achieve growth, strategic agility policy is the tool for this growth continuity. To be agile as an organization you have to make sure that the adjustments of change are not disruptive to the entire system. Change has to be introduced in a consequence of closely controlled patterns that move with the organization in a smooth transition, but parallel to the sense of urgency requiring change. Strategic agility policy jumps as a development of the New Public Management paradigm of thinking, not just as a tool of reorganizing the company or the country on a …

Corporate Governance Roles Of Information Quality And Corporate Takeovers, Jing Li, Lin Nan, Ran Zhao Jun 2018

Corporate Governance Roles Of Information Quality And Corporate Takeovers, Jing Li, Lin Nan, Ran Zhao

Accounting Faculty Articles and Research

We examine the corporate governance roles of information quality and the takeover market with asymmetric information regarding the value of the target firm. Increasing information quality improves the takeover efficiency however, a highly efficient takeover market also discourages the manager from exerting effort. We find that perfect information quality is not optimal for either current shareholders’ expected payoff maximization or expected firm value maximization. Furthermore, current shareholders prefer a lower level of information quality than the level that maximizes expected firm value, because of a misalignment between current shareholders’ value and total firm value. We also analyze the impact of …

Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)

Proactivity has emerged as an extremely important behavior in organizations, and has been shown to correlate with very positive organizational and individual outcomes. Proactive personality has been identified as a stable personality attribute that is predictive of several positive work behaviors outcomes. Utilizing a large sample from a well-known and successful Korean multinational employer, this study investigated the influences of proactive personality on three key outcomes in the workplace, namely the level of employee creativity, level of organizational commitment, and in-role job performance. The study also examined whether the contextual factors of quality of leader-member exchange (LMX) and the level …

Picking Up The Pieces: Managing People During And After A Reorganization, Catherine B. Soehner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries need to change rapidly in response to advances in technology, expectations of users, funding, and other pressures from both inside and outside the library. Often library administration/management reorganizes personnel, duties, and departments to accomplish new goals and to shift focus of library services. Both during and after a reorganization, employees respond to the changes in a wide variety of ways, ranging from acceptance and positivity to anger and resistance. Fortunately, administrators and managers have a variety of tools available to help employees deal with change and to move them toward success. There are many books and articles on the …

Integrative Literature Review On The Antecedents Of Informal Learning In The Workplace: A Conceptual Framework For Future Research, Shinhee Jeong, Soo Jeoung Han, Jin Lee, Suravee Sunalai, Seung Won Yoon

Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite the explosion of interest in informal learning in the workplace, few attempts have been made to synthesize the current literature. This article provides an integrative and analytical review of prior empirical studies, particularly focusing on what factors have been identified as antecedents of informal learning in organizations and how informal learning has been conceptualized and measured. It then suggests future avenues for theory building, research, and practice. The authors propose a conceptual framework for understanding informal learning activities using three dimensions: learning competence, intentionality, and developmental relatedness. Implications for human resource development research and practice are also discussed.

Big Data Techniques And Talent Management: Recommendations For Organizations And A Research Agenda For I-O Psychologists, Michael C. Campion, Michael A. Campion, Emily D. Campion

Management Faculty Publications

Big data and its applicability to talent management (TM) as defined by Rotolo et al. (2018) has already been recognized by many outside the field of I-O psychology. The market is beginning to include offerings from vendors for products that use some combination of big data techniques to process vast amounts of data or previously unanalyzable data, which they claim will improve components of TM for organizations. Unfortunately, as noted in the focal article, this “frontier” issue makes it difficult for organizations to separate the wheat from the chaff. Further, with few exceptions, I-O psychology is just beginning …

Acquiring Organizational Capital, Peixin Li, Frank Weikai Li, Baolian Wang, Zilong Zhang Jun 2018

Acquiring Organizational Capital, Peixin Li, Frank Weikai Li, Baolian Wang, Zilong Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational capital is the accumulation and use of private information to enhance economic efficiency for a firm. Theory has argued that organizational capital is typically embodied in employees and the organizational structure, and is hard to transfer across organizations. In this paper, we study whether organizational capital is transferable across firms via mergers. The evidence shows that acquirers gain more from acquiring firms with higher organizational capital and acquirers are also willing to pay a higher premium for higher organizational capital targets. The evidence suggests that acquiring higher organizational capital targets creates synergies which are shared between acquirers and targets.

A Field Study: Managers’ Work Behavioral Styles, Thomas G. Henkel Jun 2018

A Field Study: Managers’ Work Behavioral Styles, Thomas G. Henkel

Publications

Over the years, personality assessment tests have allowed employers and managers to discover the personal types regarding strengths and weaknesses of their employees and themselves. This includes how they process and organize information, make decisions, and interact with team members and other stakeholders (PMBOK, 2017). The present research study explored the applicable work behavioral styles of experienced managers attending an advanced leadership educational program. Seven hundred and fifty-three experienced managers agreed to reveal their results, and descriptive statistics were conducted to determine their behavioral work styles. The results may provide a better understanding of managers’ behavioral work styles, which characterize …

A Critical Perspective To Managing Generational Diversity In The Workspace In East Asia, Debra Moh Yunni May 2018

A Critical Perspective To Managing Generational Diversity In The Workspace In East Asia, Debra Moh Yunni

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The paper takes a look at the cultural themes that influence behavior and decision-making processes in East Asia, highlighting dimensions of hierarchy, collectivism and saving face. The social constructs that are shaped by these dimensions cultivate an organizational culture that is top-down and group-oriented. To delve into a more meaningful understanding of the generational conflict in East Asia, an analysis of generational theory and the changing work environment provides an insight into the widening generational gap and the domains of tension experienced by those sharing a multi-generational workspace. The author suggests that managing generational diversity has its roots in fostering …

Examining Managerial Leadership Behavior, Perceived Proximity, And Job Satisfaction In Distributed Work Arrangements, David D. Macauley May 2018

Examining Managerial Leadership Behavior, Perceived Proximity, And Job Satisfaction In Distributed Work Arrangements, David D. Macauley

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

More than 70% of all employers and managers utilize flexible or distributed work arrangements (Greenfield, 2017; World at work, 2017). Yet, it appears that few organizations are prepared to manage the relationship elements that come with a distributed workforce (Boss, 2017; Miller & Campell, 2013). Using structural equation modeling and data from 838 participants, the study examined the relationship between managerial behavior, perceived proximity, and job satisfaction within organizations that utilize distributed work. The results indicate that managerial behavior has a positive relationship with perceived proximity and employee job satisfaction and supports previous literature showing perceived proximity to be more …

A Study Of Transformational Leadership Practices To Police Officers' Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment, John P. Decker

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study is based upon Bass and Riggio’s (2006) Augmentation Model on Transactional and Transformational Leadership, in which this quantitative study sought to identify the amount of variance in police officer job satisfaction and organizational commitment that can be explained by police chiefs’ transformational leadership behaviors above and beyond the influence of transactional behaviors. A total of 166 police officers were surveyed in five central New Jersey police departments in relation to their job satisfaction and organizational commitment, as well as the leadership behaviors in which their police chiefs engaged, utilizing Bass and Avolio’s (2004) Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X). This …
