The Effect Of Self-Control And Grit On Female Leader Emergence, Heather E. Mitterer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women account for 47% of the total workforce in the United States, but only 27% of women hold executive positions. The purpose of this study was to assess whether and to what extent a significant relationship exists between self-control and grit, as well as the effect that both have on female leader emergence within male-dominated industries of manufacturing, computer science, and engineering in the United States. The goal of this research was to show how gender stereotypes shape a woman’s journey to leadership, with a focus that does not characterize women as victims of discrimination, but rather empowers women to …

A Meta-Analysis Of E-Recruitment Applicant Experience, Perception, And Behavior, Diem J. Mooney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
E-recruitment, an Internet-based approach for recruitment, has been shown to be an efficient method for organizations to reach a target candidate population. However, challenges with recruitment websites have resulted in high rates of job seekers abandoning an online application before completion. A quantitative meta-analytic review of literature from 2009 to 2019 was conducted to determine the relationship between applicant user experience (UX) when interacting with an organization’s e-recruitment website, applicant perceptions of the hiring organization, and applicant behaviors related to pursuing employment. The review initially considered 105 candidate articles, of which 41 were consider after applying initial inclusions criteria. After …

Performance Evaluation Criteria For Project Managers, Nestor Briones Aquino
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Supervisors of business project managers lack strategies to effectively evaluate the work of project managers, increasing the probability of project failure, and costing organizations billions of dollars in losses each year. Effective evaluation of the work of project managers is essential to avoid project failure. Grounded in Kaplan and Norton’s balanced scorecard theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies supervisors of business project managers use to evaluate the project managers’ work. The participants comprised 3 supervisors of project managers in the Rocky Mountain area of the United States with successful experience in evaluating the …

Integration Workplace Practices For Generation Z- An E-Delphi Study, Unnatti Jain
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective integration of new generations of employees has been a problem for organizations for decades, resulting in high turnover, increased costs, and lowered revenue. Generation Z (Gen Z) has recently entered the workforce and is experiencing the same ineffective integration practices as prior generations, with characteristics and expectations that conflict with current work climates. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the level of consensus among 15 midlevel organizational managers over the age of 30, employed at a mid-level managers’ position with a direct reporting line of 20 or more employees for a minimum of 2 years, possessing …

The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Profitability Of Small, Nonprofit, Private, Higher Education Institutions In Georgia, Walter V. Murray
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small, nonprofit, private, higher education institutions (SNPHEIs) are facing economic challenges that threaten their existence. This threat represents a public policy problem because 28% of all higher education in America is delivered by SNPHEIs. The purpose of this study was to investigate any correlational relationships that may exist between the organizational culture (OC) in SNPHEIs and their financial sustainability. Based on the competing values framework, a causal relationship between OC and organizational profitability within the SNPHEI was posited. In this study, both descriptive and comparative research questions were used; they focused on the OC types identified in the competing values …
Gender Ideology And Impressions Toward Opposite-Gendered Coworkers, Pamela Singleton
Gender Ideology And Impressions Toward Opposite-Gendered Coworkers, Pamela Singleton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To achieve organizational effectiveness, leaders must examine what impacts productivity, such as workplace equality for women hindered to the point of exclusion and discrimination. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if gender ideology, as the predictor variable, and male and female impressions toward an opposite-gendered coworker, as the criterion variable, predicts an individual's impressions toward an opposite-gendered coworker, in alignment with gender role theory. The Gender Role Ideology measure was used to assess perceptions about appropriate roles for men and women, and Coworker Resource Scale was used to assess the nature of coworker relationships among 203 middle- …
Influence Of Collectivistic And Individualistic Values On Probation Officers' Retention, Audrene Janell Ellis
Influence Of Collectivistic And Individualistic Values On Probation Officers' Retention, Audrene Janell Ellis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Probation officers are departing their employment before retirement at a high rate depending on the agency, location, and type of position, which impacts society. The cost associated with training a new officer could consume a large portion of an agency's yearly budget, leaving many inexperienced officers to supervise dangerous offenders and defendants. Thus, it is important to examine factors influencing retention such as whether individualistic and collectivist values predict a relationship between retention intent of probation officers. The purpose of this quantitative research study, guided by Hofstede's cultural theory, was to determine whether family embeddedness influences retention intent of probation …

Conflict Style Is Not A Label: The Relationship Of Age, Education Level, Work Level, Reason For Assessment, And Time Between Assessments To Conflict Style Change, Michael P. Kelly
Conflict Style Is Not A Label: The Relationship Of Age, Education Level, Work Level, Reason For Assessment, And Time Between Assessments To Conflict Style Change, Michael P. Kelly
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Organizations and research that are only measuring conflict style one time, are treating conflict style as a trait or label. However, conflict style can change over time, and with context. Even the circumstances around the conflict itself may impact how individuals handle conflict. This means that individuals may demonstrate different conflict styles in different circumstances. There is little research that explores the implications of individual conflict style change if measured at different times and in different circumstances. Nor is there much research that explores what factors may have an influence on conflict style change. This study explores whether conflict style …
Using Input From Landlords Participating In The Dothan Housing Authority's Housing Choice Voucher Program (Hcvp) To Streamline Operations And Increase Retention, Michael C. Threatt
Using Input From Landlords Participating In The Dothan Housing Authority's Housing Choice Voucher Program (Hcvp) To Streamline Operations And Increase Retention, Michael C. Threatt
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
The Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) is a public-private partnership between a landlord, voucher holder, and a Public Housing Authority (PHA). However, this public-private partnership appears to be a two-sided partnership instead of a three-way partnership as the HCVP was designed. Over 110,000 landlords have withdrawn from the HCVP since 2009, which has negatively affected housing choices for voucher holders. This phenomenon of landlords leaving the HCVP is a catastrophe problem for the rental housing crisis that is a part of the larger affordable housing crisis. The perception of institutional bureaucracy for landlords is their reality, and the unintended consequence …

Predicting Quality Outcome.S Of Privatized Services In Local Governments Utilizing The Scott And Bruce Measure, Kenneth L. Ward
Doctoral Dissertations
Privatization has been one of the main challenges in the reform of the public service. Privatization is often regarded as an essential means of achieving improved efficiency and quality of public services, and municipalities develop novel methods to privatize their services to cope up with the financial strain. Privatization of services, however, requires a well-formulated model of decision-making that leaders can utilize to realize the most positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the type of decision-making style that could be used to predict a favorable outcome when making decisions to privatize government services or projects in …

Conducting interviews in a cross-cultural setting is increasingly common for human performance technology (HPT) practitioners and researchers. Planning to conduct interviews in a culture that the practitioner may not be familiar with requires additional methodological and ethical considerations. In this article, we draw from published scholarly works on cross-cultural interviewing practices across disciplines to develop evidence-based recommendations HPT professionals can utilize in their own cross-cultural interview project.

An Exploration In Accountable Care Organization Structure, Contingency And Performance, 2015-2017, Siriporn P. Satjapot
Theses and Dissertations
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 enacted one of the most significant reforms seen in the United States healthcare landscape. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) led transformation efforts in regulatory reform and coverage expansion across the U.S. population. Since 2010, care delivery systems have been shifting from episodic, decentralized and fee-for-service models to value-based population health models, like accountable care organizations (ACO). ACOs have been specifically primed for local response to improve the health of their communities. ACO research has traditionally focused on performance measures like mortality, readmissions, quality outcomes and savings. ACO organizational characteristics …

Supporting Safety Culture In Academia: Safety Communication Barriers, Emily Faulconer, Chelsea Lenoble
Publications
In the last decade, we have heard of multiple disturbing academic laboratory accidents resulting in significant injury and property damage. When these hit headlines, it can spur self-reflection across academic institutions. The unfortunate truth is that safety in academia tends to be problematic. Accidents happen regularly even if they do not make headlines, with post-accident analyses typically revealing systematic safety failures. As a result, the concept of safety culture has come into the spotlight.
Impact Of Sanctions And Awareness On Intention To Comply With Information Security, Kevin Fitzgerald
Impact Of Sanctions And Awareness On Intention To Comply With Information Security, Kevin Fitzgerald
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employees in higher education are likely to violate information security policies because of the open nature of academic institutions. Policy violations can lead to data breaches and identity theft that can cause harm to businesses and individuals. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional study based on general deterrence theory and neutralization theory was to analyze the relationships between the independent variables, severity of sanctions, vulnerability to sanctions, and awareness of consequences, and the dependent variable, intention to comply with information security policy. Participants (n=100) who work in a higher education institution with an information security policy completed an online …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Oneida Nation community members created a new and developing organization The Healing Society (fictious name) operated by a volunteer board. The board needed strategic direction to build organizational capacity and sustainability to address the lack of awareness in the community about the increase in opioid and heroin abuse after a well-known community member died from an overdose. The purpose of this postpositivist constructionist qualitative case study was to gather empirical data from the perspectives of internal and external stakeholders through a SWOT analysis focused on their perspectives. Their answers addressed: (a) the organizational strengths and weaknesses of The Healing Society …

Relationship Between Nonprofit Leadership Intention, Leadership Development Programs, And Succession Planning Documentation, Denise March
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding the importance of efficient and effective leadership transition to retain organizational intelligence can mitigate the risks of significant disruption. The problem for nonprofits is the potential loss of organizational intelligence, funding, and continuity as baby boomers retire and transition out of their leadership roles without effectively addressing leadership transition and an impending leadership deficit. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationship between leadership intention factors, succession planning documentation, and leadership development programs. The research questions pertained to the relationship between leadership intention factors, succession planning documentation, and leadership development programs. Ajzen’s theory of …

How Efficient Is Market Pricing: Can Investors Beat The Market? Further, Are Prices Always Right As Stated In The Efficient Market Hypothesis?, Porter M. Mcmanus
Honors Theses and Capstones
The Efficient Market Hypothesis is a widely accepted economic theory developed by economist Eugene Fama. The theory states that at any given time, an asset’s price reflects all available public information and will always trade at fair value. The motivation for this research is derived from the content taught in undergraduate finance courses. In undergraduate academia finance students are introduced to the idea of market efficiency, as it is a building block for future theory and application. However, this theory is rarely questioned in the world of undergraduate academia, rather just taken as fact by students.
The underlying research in …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The neglect of Inland Container Depots (ICDs) in the Nigerian maritime industry has been a protracted problem even though the facilities are potential sources of revenue in boosting the nationâs economy. The specific problem was the full potential of coordinated governance initiatives, such as the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) aimed at addressing the challenge, has not been realized because of the failure of port actors to break away from old-path dependence in managing the port facilities. The purpose of this qualitative classical Delphi study was to determine how a panel of maritime industry experts views the desirability, feasibility, and importance …
Hispanic Women's Experiences And Perceptions Of Challenges In Higher Education Leadership, Blanca Figueroa Estrada
Hispanic Women's Experiences And Perceptions Of Challenges In Higher Education Leadership, Blanca Figueroa Estrada
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A lack of diversity exists in higher education leadership, particularly with Hispanic/Latina women. Differences in cultural backgrounds play a role when leaders who are mostly White consider individuals of other ethnicities for promotion. In 2016, only 3% of all higher education leadership positions were held by Hispanics/Latinos and even a smaller percentage were women. Identifying the challenges Hispanic/Latino women face in competing for leadership roles in higher education is needed to understand the factors needed to be overcome to succeed. A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted with 13 participants to explore how Hispanic/Latina women perceive the higher education work environment …
Emotional Intelligence, Turnover Intention, And Commitment Among Nonprofit Employees, Tabitha Brewster
Emotional Intelligence, Turnover Intention, And Commitment Among Nonprofit Employees, Tabitha Brewster
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover is a persistent problem contributing to financial issues and declining
productivity in nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits cannot fulfill their core missions of
providing services to people in need when managing staffing disruptions. Measuring
employee turnover intention can determine the probability of employee turnover, and a
potential predictor of turnover intention is emotional intelligence, an area unstudied in the
nonprofit sector. This study was designed to explore this relationship, in addition to the
employee's commitment to the organization. The population consisted of 273 nonprofit
employees older than 18 years, working in a nonsupervisory capacity. They completed an
online survey consisting …

Increasing Gender Diversity On Corporate Boards: Voices Of Male And Female Directors In The United States, Vasilia Vasiliou
Increasing Gender Diversity On Corporate Boards: Voices Of Male And Female Directors In The United States, Vasilia Vasiliou
2020
An emerging literature highlights the lack of gender diversity on corporate boards, its implications, and the need for more scholarship and theoretical development on board diversity. According to this literature, to better understand the reasons behind the persistent underrepresentation of women on boards (WOB), of particular importance is the need to access boards directly for data, as opposed to focusing solely on human capital, firm, and board characteristics. This dissertation research directly accesses both male and female board directors using a qualitative interview approach and employs grounded theory techniques to investigate (a) how and why corporate boards appoint members, and …

The Experience Of Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In The Workplace, Josephine Laverne Harris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with children for many decades, but it can continue into adulthood. However, little research has focused on adults with ADHD or the specific processes through which such adults mitigate the challenges they face, especially in the workplace. The purpose of this qualitative, grounded theory study was to provide a better understanding of the strategies and support systems adults with ADHD use to overcome workplace challenges. Self-efficacy theory grounded the study, allowing for an understanding of the lived experiences of adults with ADHD in the workplace. The researcher conducted 12 semistructured interviews with adults with …
